"New Release Friday 2022-09-02"
Fri Sep-02-22 08:12 AM by thebigfunk

Hope everyone's doing well on this first release day of September. This year is just flying.

I got nothing this week, lol. Probably won't have any time to look until this afternoon or evening, either.

So what's everyone checking for? What have you been playing this week? Any good news or finds to share?

edit: also, fwiw, bandcamp friday's are back. i've seen some places are doing extra discounts, too (We Jazz records, for one). So if you're buying, that's a good place to start!

Last week or so I've been rocking:

Nikitch & Kuna Maze - Back & Forth. From Tru Thoughts and very true to their more house-oriented stuff. Cool release, some joints have an almost smoothed out broken beat feel. I'm only a few listens in but this might stay in rotation for a while as a good early morning or late night spin.

That JID got multiple start-to-finish plays. I don't love everything about it but it's highs are plentiful.

(Side question: is Kendrick the most recent rapper to have a really identifiable influence on folks who came after him? You can hear a lot of influences in JID but Kendrick comes through to me. I hear K in a lot of other folks from the last five or six years, too.)

Finally got around to that Brad Mehldau "Jacob's Ladder" record from this year, which leans fully into his proggier interests. It was ... weird. I think it's intentionally pulling from the campier side of prog, too -- which made it hard to know what was "serious" and what was poking-fun-at-self-seriousness. Some crazy prog-meets-jazz moments, though. Will listen again just to see if I can make more sense of it.

which I’m kinda happy about. Gives me more time with JID, Roc, and Pooh from last week. And will probably go back to some others I want to give more spins too - I’m thinking Lupe and Domo Genesis, at the moment.

In These Times
by Makaya McCraven

Chicago stand up! Saw dude in concert for the first time earlier this year.
Finally stopped streaming his stuff and supported the vinyl release.
Trying to get to another show now that I'm more familiar with his work.

Waited to pre-order this cause I knew a bandcamp friday would be coming up and I just wanted to support dude.
LOVE what he's doing as far as his podcasts. The What Had Happened Was with Prince Paul was epic.
Again, I need to go back and check some of his older stuff.
A song came up on a shuffle a while back that I meant to research further.

FLEXUALITY

More UK dudes doing 80s pop synth boogie.
This is something that's been in my bandcamp wishlist for over a year.
