He can rap and the production is great. Talks about his family a lot which is cool.

Feeling the more mellowed out tracks then the stuff the album opens with - I think that might change after a couple more solid listens. I was listening while chilling and the higher energy songs weren't hitting for me in that mode

This album really delivered everything I wanted to hear from him. Love to hear dope new artists. I kinda wish artists like JID could come to really represent the new generation of hip hop. That is to say, I hope his popularity with the younger hip hop fans reaches the same magnitude as the quality of the music.

I think it is a somewhat fair criticism.

That being said, it is legit dude's voice...he has shown Kendrick love...Kendrick clearly isn't his only influence...and at the end of the day the album/music is dope, authentic, and fresh in its own way.

Also, he objectively does not sound exactly like him. He just doesn't.

Like someone else said, we are at the point where artists influenced by Kendrick are going to blow up.

JID is one. Grip is another off the top who is also super dope.

We're just old af man. I'd encourage you to try and just enjoy this shit because rap is in a GREAT place right now.

shiiittt old enough to see several generations of influencers....

I remember when the board was warming to Kendrick (this is where I learned of him). In those first few releases I thought he sounded like an odd mashup of young Elzhi, Common, and Wayne. With a clear influence from Pac (though not in his voice/delivery)

Now here we are. People complaining new dudes sound too much like him.

Ha, fair enough! I remember the Outkast comparisons as well, in particular on Bitch Don’t Kill Ny Vibe.

Still this is a time where some of the most popular rappers (Kendrick, Drake, Cole, Nicki, etc) are 35-40. Griselda didn’t even start popping until they were mid 30s, and are all at or close to 40 now. Old doesn’t mean irrelevant anymore, thankfully.

And it’s more than just the voice. It’s the delivery, the inflections, the songwriting. Just seems like more than influence to a degree.

I get it, I’m never made at being influenced because that’s how art works. But sometimes it just seems to cross the line and this is one of those times upon first listen.

Also, and this is just me and my preference, some of these new cats just seem to be too extra with their delivery. Like they’re trying to change their voice and overdo the way they say shit.

2nd half is probably superior, but 1st half is great for a run.

Dude really exceeded expectations and has gotten significantly better with each release.

I could be mistaken but I think he has an album done with No ID...or at least it was in the works. That would be an interesting follow up.

Might be album of the year. Up there with Black Thought, Lupe, and Elucid for me.

Gonna be interesting to see what people think for album of the year. Seems wide open to me in terms of both my personal pick and common consensus. I love the Thought album….like Lupe but need to give it a lot more time. Elucid didn’t grab me as much but I should go back.

If I had to pick album of the year for me personally I’m thinking Vince Staples, Benny, Lloyd Banks, and even though it’s new - Big Pooh, as my personal favorites so far. JID could easily get there too.
