Haven't taken a look at anything yet today -- anything out there? If not, what's got your ear right now?

also the styles P & havoc. im going to listen to that lil peep & harry fraud just out of curiosity lol

right now im trying to wrap up albums from november, almost done with napoleon da legend & amerigo gazaway - the world changed which i am really enjoying. some throwback early 2000s underground rapping with a bit more current production.

I like this, too, but need to go back for another listen to get a feel for how much. Have you heard any other stuff from him? I listened to the Whole in My Heart series earlier this year and dug that, maybe less consistent across the three volumes but I thought the rapping, on the whole, was maybe a bit more engaging? But I didn't spend a lot of time with those either, so really the word is I need to check this guy further -- he's definitely someone to keep an eye on.

its not high tier elite rapping but its just pure no non-sense rapping. not often that an album like that comes along that i really enjoy anymore.

going to bust out my adidas tonight lol

I dig it.
Not just a beat/groove album.

Sounds like a continuation of the Sons Of The James album he produced.

Out on the uber-reliable International Anthem. Short, but awesome. Probably will be one of my favorites of the year.

Thanks for mentioning this -- it's gotten a bit of hype around it pre-release, which can say a lot for a record of its type.

Also recently out on International Anthem is Ben LaMar Gay's "Open Arms to Open Us," which I'm listening to now. Gay circulates in the same circles as folks like Jeff Parker, Tomeka Reid, Makaya McCraven, etc. Listening now for the first time and the record is definitely varied in sound. Won't bother trying to describe it right now as I need some time with it but definitely worth a listen.

Is International Anthem and the Chicago jazz-ish network the closest US equivalent to the London/UK jazz-ish scene? Not just in the amount that they play together but also how their artists tend to push at genre-boundaries in a rather consistent way and seem to share a certain artistic ethos. They certainly have the eyes of the press in a way that most music in this vein does not --- which is great.
