"The Lesson's Favorite Hip Hop Albums of the 2000s (Voting)"

Last year we voted on our favorite hip hop albums of all time. 27 Lessonheads participated and the list resulted in a pretty good mix of universal classics and Lesson favorites. However, with the exception of three 2000 releases, the top 25 was all 80s and 90s albums.

Link to last year’s results of The Lesson’s Favorite Hip Hop Albums: https://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=3028277

The year I’ll be bringing this back, only this time lets focus on 2000s albums (the 2000-2009 decade). Clearly the three albums that were featured in the top 25 of all time (Like Water for Chocolate, Train of Thought, Fantastic, Vol. 2) will finish near the top of the list, but what else are the definitive great 2000s hip hop albums according to The Lesson?

Post up to 25 of your favorite hip hop albums (key word: favorite, not best) of the 2000-2009 decade, starting with your favorite/#1 and going down.

1. Favorite album (please use Artist - Title format, ex: Common - Like Water For Chocolate)
2. Second favorite
3. 3rd favorite
..
..
..
..
25. 25th favorite

I'll log all the responses and count the votes, with points being distributed on a weighted basis.

1. If you don't want to submit 25 albums, submit however many you want (up to 25) and they will still count. Anything greater than 25 won't be counted.
2. If you don't include #'s with your rankings, I'm assuming the top album is your #1 and so on unless otherwise noted.
3. After this post is about a month old and seems to have died down (no new entries), I'll close out voting and post the results in a new thread.

I missed that when I was putting my list together. It wouldn't had made it in my 25 (definitely worthy), I think I probably would have it around Fishscale.

I decided to leave out Badu and keep these to ones that mostly contain rap songs. I was going to cross check these with my all time favorites list to make sure I kept them in the same order but decided to just post as is. This is how I feel right now, any discrepancy just goes to show how close these all are. It's hard finding the balance between what I remember listening to the most at the time and what I still go back to more often. All in all I feel pretty good about the above list.

The next 25 I was considering incase anyone is wondering.

J Dilla - Donuts
JAY Z - The Black Album
Binary Star - Masters of the Universe
dead prez - Let's Get Free
The Roots - Game Theory
Common - Be
Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead

Hardest part was trying to balance what I was really rocking with them, and the ones I rock with a bit more now. Hell of a decade, really. The era where I both had the money to buy more music, the ability to download anything for free, the time to listen to everything, and the time to talk and especially read about everything on OKP. I could’ve made a top 500 and still forgot some. I’m sure I forgot something, but I did my best to take my time and think a bit, and look through some music.

1. Little Brother - The Listening
2. Reflection Eternal - Train of Thought
3. Q-Tip - The Renaissance
4. Little Brother - Minstrel Show
5. Scarface - The Fix
6. Common - Like Water for Chocolate
7. Foreign Exchange - Connected

10. UGK - Underground Kingz
11 The Roots - Game Theory
12. Ghostface - Supreme Clientele
13. AZ - Aziatic
14. Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
15. Black Milk - Tronic
16. Common - Be
17. Slum Village - Fantastic Vol. 2
18. Jaylib - Champion Sound
19. Sean Price - Monkey Barz
20. Snoop - Blue Carpet Treatment
21. Jay-Z - The Blueprint
22. Nas - Stillmatic
23. Kanye West - Graduation
24. Evidence - Weatherman
25. LEGACY - Project Mayhem

This was a weird decade for me. I graduated high school in 2001. So I spent the next 10 years basically trying to soak up the 10 years before I graduated and what came out new at the same time. I wouldn't start DJing until around 2007. I'm glad I waited and got my ears all the way right. I'm going to include only my heaviest of rotation hip hop for that decade. Expect for the Tech N9ne (was never pressed) and Kanye (Won't spend a dime to support this nigga EVER AGAIN).....I have every one of these records on vinyl.

1. Outkast - Stankonia
2. Nas - Stillmatic
3. The Roots - Game Theory
4. Lupe Fiasco - The Cool
5. Kanye - Graduation
6. Blu & Exile - Below the Heavens
7. Atmosphere - God Loves Ugly
8. Talib Kweli - Quality
9. DJ Quik - Balance and Options
10. N.E.R.D. - In Search of....
11. Del the Funky Homosapien - Both Sides of the Brain
12. Tech N9ne - Killer
13. Lil Wayne - The Carter II
14. Little Brother - Minstrel Show
15. Black Milk - Tronic
16. Common - Like Water for Chocolate
17. T.I. - King
18. Elzhi - The Preface
20. Q- Tip - The Renaissance
21. MURS - 3:16 the 9th Edition
22. Skyzoo - Cloud 9: The 3 Day High
23. Eminem - The Eminem Show
24. Dead Prez - Let's Get Free
25. People Under The Stairs - O.S.T.

I would have put that right near 2009 in my head, but my listening from that period was spotty and my memory is ridiculously fuzzy...

When RTJ4 came out, I went back and listened to RAP for the first time in a long time and was really impressed with how well it has held up ... one of those albums that practically gets better over time.

It didn’t spend much time on the ranking order, this album could easily be much higher on my list

Nujabes (RIP) beats are amazing… love the drums, jazz and heavy bass. Fat Jon also produced one track.

Stuff like this gets me pulling out stuff I haven't listened to in a long time. This morning it's Deltron 3030, probably been six or seven years since the last time I listened --- so good! Forgot how many of these verses I remember by heart and how much I wore this out. Thanks for doing this.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Needless to say, I was a big fan of The Soulquarians in this decade (The Roots especially). K-Os was a big go-to during this decade as well.

I have a few instrumental albums in here along with D'Angelo. Since these are all made either by hip-hop producers or featuring a strong influence by hip-hop producers (D'Angelo), I thought they may apply. If they don't let me know, I'll add some other albums to fill out the list.

The twenty-five were easy to fill out. But ordering the back half of the list was harder than I thought it would be. I'm more of tiers than number ranking guy so breaking down the list in this amount of detail took a bit of time.

It's interesting that for as much as I thought hip-hop was trash, there was a good deal of really good music throughout. Especially towards the beginning and end of the decade.
