I'm assuming this means a new album will drop shortly.

I just heard the first 10 seconds, clicked the 2 minute mark, heard that there were still no drums, and turned it off.

When is this fucking trend gonna end. Been over a decade at this point.

Agreed, it's fine for 1-2 songs and interludes but whole/most albums done this way is weird and I can't help but wonder if it's because they don't know how to properly hook up drums and hide behind it being a "style" or artistic choice.

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

I would think the same but you got producers who make dope beats with drums like Alchemist doing this trend as well knowing damn he should be ashamed of doing what I call lazy loops.

With rappers like K.A. and Roc Marciano basically getting more attention off of rhyming over drum-less beats, than rhyming over boom bap joints, they feel no need to go back to it right now.

This is why I was so sad when J-Dilla died right after he did those three "soul chops" aka the famous "donuts" style, cause everybody held on to that style like a sex addict hungry for cum; now people are calling it chillwave rap but even some of those beats have drums, at least they have some good bass lines to go with these drum-less tracks.

Nobody in the game has the balls(bad judgement?) to do this for 13+ songs. Except maybe Roc Marciano. Roc's drumless albums are just as bad.

I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but he's such a dope MC. His lines are so vivid and smart. I know he probably wants his words to stand above everything else but this is NOT the way.

It sucks because I really want to listen to dude but musically it's aggressively boring. Maybe release the albums as acapella?

Sorry thought this was another Tanya Morgan post since that was the catchphrase of the new album, lol.

As for this I have to agree with those saying it was lyrically strong but musically boring. And I’m not a “it HAS to have drums” guy at all. But there just wasn’t enough going on there for me. Will further check for him though.

Not only aren’t there drums there, the rhymes don’t even seem like they were formatted with a drum pattern in mind. This is spoken word to me, not emceeing.

'Sad to Say' works on all levels. 'I notice' is dope, minimalism and all. 'We living' is pretty good. 'Enough Praise'=fire. 'Be Grateful' is also dope.

...or needed. Neither hip-hop, nor blackness, nor KA or his music needs your negativity on this forum. Please keep the discussion about the music. ANYONE is allowed to have an opinion on the art.

Do you like the drum-less beats? Do you like the rhymes? why? Why not? Let's keep the conversation in that key.

Then you accused him of trying to dictate what "black art" is. To me that sounds like you are saying that you are the arbiter of what black art is and that you have decided that his opinion is irrelevant. I would interpret that as negative. It would also upset me too if someone tried to discount my opinion in that way. This discussion devolves from there.

Why can't you just point out that sometimes drums aren't needed and possibly why you like the album.

Do you even like the album? What are your favorite songs? Do you think the album would be better with some harder drums? I feel like the exchange stopped being about the merits of the music.

Isn't the general discussion forum for the place for that sort of thing? (if there is a place for it at all)

he didnt say "I dont like it", he went so far as to call it trash

full disclosure, I dont love much rap without drums. but I respect the artist's vision, especially when they're of Ka's caliber

>Then you accused him of trying to dictate what "black art"
>is.

my exact words were "maybe stop trying to dictate what black art should be as a white man"

the same thing happened with To Pimp A Butterfly, it wasnt music that made most white rap fans comfortable enough and they dismissed it

To me that sounds like you are saying that you are the
>arbiter of what black art is and that you have decided that
>his opinion is irrelevant.

how is me cordially addressing a white person's limits on what constitutes as "good" black music trying to be an arbiter?

I would interpret that as negative.
>It would also upset me too if someone tried to discount my
>opinion in that way. This discussion devolves from there.

I wasnt angry, confrontational or anything of the sort. I gave him something to consider, his whiteness took offense.

If I cant confront issues of race on a message board started by The Roots, I dont know what the fuck is going on

was my issue critique or was my issue you and a white man saying "this is trash because it doesnt sound like what I want to hear"?

"others see it too" sounds like you're reaching. it's also sketchy to catch feelings about a black person speaking up when others arent exercising care about black culture, but dont let me stop you

all of that aside, you've had a one sided beef with me for maybe a decade now. I dont know or care about what your problem is, I've grown past insults and nonsense

I thought atruhead was the only sensitive on this thread. Didn't know it was that serious for you dog. I simply liked your comment, and am not a fan of atruhead's sensitive gatekeeper spirit on this thread. But I will stay out of your way, my dude.

Im actually the least sensitive one in the discussion.

I wouldnt have had anything to say if your stance was "I dont prefer this sound of his", you said "this is trash" which reeks of entitlement i.e. "(black) artists should create what I want to hear"

race definitely factors in and Im not to blame for pointing it out.

I felt pretty strongly that the lack of drums was wack when I first listened and it kept drawing me in until eventually I changed my mind about it.

There have been a few KA albums that I never came around on though so I totally get it.

I feel you.

I feel like this is just a sub-genre/style of hip hop that I just don't get drawn to. When it is a singular song on an album, I listen to it once, appreciate the dope lyrics and the structure of the rhyme, but the song typically gets skipped on the subsequent listens.

I can totally appreciate the lyricism, but for "me" it is lacking in replay value for "me".

As I think about it, and as blasphemous as it sounds, I don't know if I would've replayed Black Thought's FunkFlex freestyle as many times if it was just a loop with no drums. I need there to be a bounce to it, and drums create that.

Peace

I'd suggest anyone who wasn't really feeling it give it a few more spins. If you still don't like it after that just google an Otolaryngologists in your area and make an appointment at your convenience.

It's music for grown men made by a grown man. The content wouldn't really change that. Grown men listen to wu-tang. Grown men are big fans of biggie. Grown men are fans of mobb deep as well I think. Hence, grown man rap. It is rap that grown men are likely to enjoy.

Is rap only allowed to be grown man rap if it's about 403b retirement accounts?

*full disclosure I am a grown man.

So I'm thinking there must be something different about this from what's been out there.

If grown man rap it's just rap made by males over a certain age, I don't think it ever went anywhere. In fact, that makes the post title rather odd.

and this album is "children's rap" or something not as mature, when in fact, all those albums are better than this one lol

to convey I'm a huge fan of his understated and clever rhymes. Have to sit down and pay attention to catch some of the layers of what he's saying.

Nothing more, nothing less.

I can appreciate where some love this for the lyrics. But...All I can focus on when I listened to the album is "Where Is The Snare!?!?!?".

I hate to say that I am turned off by this one thing, but it is a major component to the replay value of the project.

"GIVE ME A SNARE!!!"

I'm attributing the annoyance in this post to the fact that most of y'all can tell you'd love his albums without reservation if they just had drums like you want. Because the rhymes and samples are on point.

It kinda reeks of condescension. Like, if I were to guess, this dude definitely used the phrase "hip hop is dead" in the mid-2000s lol.

But as far as the music goes, I've actually really warmed up to the drumless trend recently. A Ka track featuring Roc Marciano ("Sins of a Father") came up on Spotify and I'm super into it, but just haven't gotten into his catalog yet.

I'll check this one out in a bit.

Warning - This may not be a fully vetted thought, more stream of thought.

I feel like beats without drums, and with darker samples are akin to "Emo-Rap / Depressed Mood Rap". There is such a small amount of time that I want to be in that head space that I rarely hits me as something that I want to listen to.

This is not a knock to his lyricism, but this is just how I feel about the vibe.

Peace

To me it's a dark, introspective, cold weather music. I'm certainly not throwing it on in July.

If ever there is a time that I'm going to click with an album within this sub-genre of rap it's the coming winter months.

Like I mentioned in a previously reply, I've really warmed up to the drumless wave, to a point I'd say I'm a big fan, enough to have a Spotify playlist accumulating with these tracks specifically.

The thing with drumless beats is that they are so minimalistic and empty that the rapper really needs to have a presence/charisma/energy to fill the void. Ka doesn't have that to me. His voice is very deep and monotone, and the combo of that and the lack of oomph from the beats results in me getting bored and checking out. It doesn't matter what he's actually saying, it could be revolutionary and the grownest of "grown man rap", it's a chore for me to pay attention enough.

All that said, Roc Marciano was a rapper I was sleeping on for years (figurative and literally, I'd joke his music put me to sleep) but he just recently clicked for me. But what clicked for me was his ability to really paint a landscape with his raps and really draw me into his world, I'm not getting that from Ka.

For full context, as a hip hop listener (and music listener in general) production/delivery is way more important then content. If all a rapper offers is deep, meaningful lyrics with clever wordplay and rhyme schemes but the music and delivery is meh, I may as well just digest the music via rapgenius.

I'd say

Hermit and the Recluse- Orpheus
Nights Gambit
Dr Yen Lo
Grief Pedigree
Descendants of Kain

Definitely give Orpheus a spin and get back.

On top of Marciano I've slowly turned a corner on Boldy as well (who you've constantly championed for in Griselda threads) so I'm certainly not confident Ka is not a dude I won't ever get into.

Which might seems backwards to some, but to me KA's raps are so much better and ....grown? *ducks* lol Sincere? Realistic?

I don't, no matter how many times I've tried, I can't get into Roc. I'm also not a fan of his delivery.

It could just be I haven't found the project that clicks.

Couldn't get into Boldy until Sterling and it made me hot he wasn't getting more love in context of other artists. And he's had a hellofa run since.

I've been a fan of KA since Grief Pedigree...I think Yen Lo sealed my super fan status.

Orpheus is probably his best though.

Reloaded is the Roc project that recently turned me around. It's not even new, I just never checked it out in full because Marcberg wasn't enjoyable to me (I still have to go back at some point).

What really started my warming up on Roc was enjoying his production on the Stove God Cooks album from last year as well as some songs on his album that dropped a few months after that ("Pimps Don't Wear Rabbits" in particular)

Real Bad Boldy was the first of his projects I actually enjoyed, which oddly enough was his least popular among his fanbase last year. Since then I'm been digging Bo Jackson and went back and revisited The Price of Tea in China and Manger on McNichols. I still favor the Griselda squad and a handful of other rappers in the same space, but he's starting to click with me.
