You know they ain't great, but you enjoy them alot.

Mine would be French Montana, Fabolos and Greg Nice.

But, revisionist historians have made it seem like he was this Hov-level rapper the whole time.

But, Fabolous Sport? From the Clue mixtapes and Lil' Mo songs? That dude was hella regular.

Are you crazy, do you have poor taste, or are you purely trolling?

Kurupt-N/A(don't listen to him)

Wale-ok

Buckshot -legend. This is just blasphemy.

Pusha T- top tier has classic albums (or near classics) under his belt

Big L- legend. Lifestyles of the poor and dangerous is a classic. There are so many MC's who have basically taken this mold.

Anyone who isn't top 25-30 would fall into the mid-tier to me. So rappers in the 30-100ish category.

Definitely gets overshadowed by the other two and overall isn’t as good as them. He still had the best verse on Feel It In the Air.

http://youtu.be/Z8T2znUXLqs

Warren G. Actually he’s not even considered “mid” as a rapper. But I like him.

Joe Scudda. I think he was better than “mid” but I think consensus was he was ok at best? Guess that’s the point here. I thought he was nice. He certainly had his moments.

Is CL Smooth considered mid? Because he’s one of my favorites.

He’s like a down South Redman, probably a little less sophisticated a rapper technically but same premise - personality first, but with obvious effort.

Those first 3 Ludacris albums are full of awesome songs. And he also killed like EVERY feature during that time period.

These days I actually enjoy lots of not terribly technically impressive rappers as long as they're coming from an interesting/honest place. I thought The Streets was garbage when I first heard him and just now am coming around to really enjoying his stuff. (Tangent: on his first album, I actually think you can hear a lot of similarity between his delivery and Billy Wood's current delivery)

----
I check for: Serengeti, Zeroh, Open Mike Eagle, Jeremiah Jae, Moka Only.

... he's an MC who never had the insane lyrical wordplay or technical skill of some of his peers but just had that *it* factor that even a lot of the most technically skilled rappers lack, from his generation or otherwise.

In other words he's a hip-hop legend and all time great MC, even though his bars don't necessarily stack up against most of the great lyricists of all time.

I'd have to take more time to consider where Tip stacks up. He's a more complicated case (for lack of a better term) in so many ways.

I hate speaking "ill" of dead legends like this, specifically two in a row lol.

But Guru is a lot like Phife in that he's a legend, part of one of the best and most important groups in hip-hop history, and a GREAT MC in his own right ...

... but his *bars* don't necessarily stack up against other technically great MCs IMO.

I'd argue that Guru stood out primarily because he was mature, deep, and poetic. Which in many cases matters far more than being the most "technically impressive" on the mic, as it were.

I hope both these posts come off as complimentary to Phife and Guru because they're meant to be lol.

In response to Reply # 34

As you said, Guru (and Tip) weren't lyricists, at least not in the sense that they got their success solely because they were gifted with wordplay or their vocabulary.

I guess he's as mid as Q-Tip, someone else I'm not quite sure qualifies.

But to me mid is someone whose work isn't remarkable.

So to me, Cannibus is a mid-rapper even though as a lyricist he was at a level much higher than Guru or Tip. Same with Aesop Rock.

Guru and Tip have classic songs and remarkable moments as MC's. I don't think that qualifies as mid.

I don't know about this one, he kills all his spots against top tier emcees. hell his verse on Above the Clouds was so good people still don't think he wrote it. but I get what you're saying though

he also had a style that nobody but him could pull off. think about all those guys from the early 90's that tried to rap like vibraphones and shit, none of them made it. he also has a damn near untouchable catalogue, especially in a group setting-5 undoubtedly incredible albums that he mostly held down himself. we honestly take him for granted.

Agreed ! But I think he kills those spots because he's endlessly talented in all the other ways, not necessarily because he had the best *bars*, if that makes sense ?

No question about it. That's what made him great - the fact that no one else could possibly sound like him no matter how hard they tried.

Q-Tip sh/could be in many top 30 lists.

Maybe defining mid-tier would help? I took it as meaning clearly not in the conversation as GOAT while also being VERY good/skilled.

Tip is a gifted and prolific emcee, not many rappers can release classic-level material after 20 years in the game. Tip did that with the Renaissance and nearly a decade afterwards, he reunited with his legendary group to release a fantastic Tribe album.

Always enjoyed his verses or solo tracks on Mecca + Main Ingredient.

Soul Brother #1, In The Flesh, Mind Blowin, the InI album, and the Shut em Down remix it feels like he was like this beat is TOO good for me not to spit a quick verse on this..
