“Curated By The god Hov”: JAY-Z Makes His Own Best Of Nas Playlist

JAY-Z Makes His Own Best Of Nas Playlist

JAY-Z curated a 24-track playlist highlighting some of Nas’ most popular songs.

JAY-Z has shared a Tidal playlist dedicated to Nas‘ most popular songs. On Thursday morning, the Tidal Twitter account shared the playlist, which is titled, “Curated by the god Hov: NaS.”

The 24-track playlist, which runs close to two hours, encompasses tracks from Nas’ debut Illmatic to his latest release King’s Disease. The playlist also includes some of his feature appearances, like Raekwon’s “Verbal Intercourse” and Kany West’s “We Major.”

The playlist comes ahead of the release of DJ Khaled’s Khaled Khaled album, which includes a track called “SORRY NOT SORRY” featuring both JAY-Z and Nas. The two MCs have collaborated on just three tracks together: “Black Republicans” from Nas’ Def Jam debut Hip-Hop is Dead, “Success” from Jay-Z’s American Gangster album, and Ludacris’ “I Do it For Hip-Hop.” Jay later added a verse to Jeezy’s “My President” remix, and many years before, an unreleased Nas verse was added to “Analyze This,” a collaboration between Jay, Lord Tariq, and Shaquille O’Neal.

In related news, Eminem recently shared how he owns an unopened copy of Illmatic on cassette tape that he paid between $500 and $600 for.

“I think it’s backstock from what records stores had in the back storage,” he said during an appearance on the Clubhouse app to promote his ShadyCon event. “The tapes that never sold and they just kept them. That’s the only thing I can think of. Cause nobody’s going to have a f—ing Illmatic tape and not open it.”

But it's kind of funny that very few of the songs listed were released after It Was Written.

A lot of Nas joints I love didn't make the cut but this is his playlist.

I would've had Small World, Undying Love, Blaze A 50, 2nd Childhood, Take It In Blood, Purple, Nazareth Savage and Still Dreaming to name a few.

Falcons, Braves, Bulldogs and Hawks

Geto Boys, Poison Clan, UGK, Eightball & MJG, OutKast, Goodie Mob

That shit has grown to become Nas’ most underrated song.

Primarily due to the importance of the first one but damn...

I like the second one more.

That beat

That first verse!

That second verse...

Come on man

Shit ain’t even fair

I agree that Pt.2 was underrated and got better as the years went on. And I agree that lyrically Nas painted one hell of a picture in Pt.2.

But NY State of Mind was never underrated, and never required time for our ears to adjust. And Nas painted ONE HELL OF A MOTHERFUCKERING PICTURE in Pt.1. "It was fulla children prolly/couldn't see as high as I be"

The beat on "NY State of Mind" can't ever be touched. Even the almighty Nas didn't know how to start that shit. But then he did.

There's really no comparison to be had here. Per usual, it was a mistake to do a sequel. Should've just forgone the common intro and made "Pt.2" an entirely new song with an entirely new title. Because as you guys have rightly said, it's an incredible song with an incredible beat. But it deserves to stand on its own just like The Real NY State of Mind does.

(Full disclosure: I auto-discriminate against sequels of any kind lol)
