and I don't even think it's overstating it, to say he's one of the best lyricists of our time. Not getting into albums, or careers or anything else. Phonte raps better than or as well as anyone. I can't count how many times I've heard him destroy an artist, while doing a guest verse. I've felt this way for a long time, but it really hit me one day when I was messing around on YT. I came upon these Rate the Bars videos and there's one with Rapsody. They had her read some bars and she from Phonte...and she was just in awe. The scale was 1 to 5, she gave it a 6. Then they told her who it was. He's been so ill for so long.

Common has always topped my personal list for a number of reasons, and depending on the day he probably still does.
But I enjoy Phonte's music at a level pretty much even with how much I enjoy Common's best music at this point.
My personal top 5 is as follows now:
Common Posdnuous Andre 3000 Phonte MF DOOM
Next 3:
Black Thought Nas Royce 5'9
No particular order on either list. Need to figure out who would round out my top 10 so I can just use that list instead of doing the rotating top 5 I've been doing with these 8 for the past few years lol.

He says as much at the beginning of that verse.
But man. Like a few have already mentioned, he's among the best to ever rap no question. But I think in terms of making it look effortless, he does it better than anyone.

Like for almost the last 20 years dude has been rapping about the stuff that's actually going on in my life.
Feels like coming up with somebody.
He's also one of the few rappers who has also figured out how to rap as a grownup. Only a few elite rappers have figured out how to do that (Nas & Jay for example).
