"Recommend a West Coast album to me"

I admittedly sided with the East Coast back in the day.

Honestly, just always like the music better though.

I’m not completely ignorant to West Coast hip-hop. I’m very familiar with;
Cube’s first 4 albums
Pharcyde
The Chronic
Doggystyle
‘93 Til Infinity
Regulate...G Funk Era
Conversation
Dogg Food
Ras Kass
Pac
Tha Liks
Xzibit
Luniz

But beyond that...I have not played much outside of selected songs and I’m an album guy so...

With that said...what are some must have classics that I need to check out?

Not too much a fan of the style. Definitely have skills and I get why people like them but not stuff I’d go back to.

Freestyle album is my favorite from the bunch.

Listed it in my OG post and even made a post about it before.

Maybe the most underrated west coast album ever.

To me, it’s the West Coast Group Home and iNi album.

I like it that much.

Well, not as much as Center of Attention. That’s one of my favorites of all time.

This reminds me I have no Quik albums on wax. Need to try and change that.

Just looked, and damn - why is Quik is the Name the only Quik album widely available ?! I'd have thought it'd be Rhythm-al-ism, if anything at all.

compared to his other albums quik is the name was pretty low for me in wants but it is the one i got first since it was available. i got balance & options and book of david a few months later.

ill see safe + sound and rhythm-al-ism pop up for around $90 but the generic sleeve ones. havent been able to pull the trigger on them. i saw the cover version of rhythm-al-ism once for around $70 but i had missed it. really need both of these.

Hahaha rightfully so ! These beats must've sounded great coming out of those windows.

Also I always thought I was the only one who loved "I Useta Know Her" !!!!! I don't think I've ever seen or heard anyone but you champion that song like I always have. I remember when I first bought the album right when it came out - I was in 8th grade - I'd blast Useta Know Her in my bedroom, which was right above the living room where my parents relaxed most every nite, on a near-nightly basis for weeks. My mom used to always scream at me about the bass from that song and to turn it down lol. She'd imitate the bassline and be like "IF I HAVE TO FEEL THE BASS FROM THAT SONG OVER MY HEAD ONE MORE TIME I'M GONNA GO INSANE" lolol.

Whole song is great but AMG's 1st verse always cracked me up. "and seen my n**** Quik's name on the booty" lol

Gotta mention "No Doubt," too. That song goes hard. I came to appreciate it more several years after the album was released but I love it.

Any song could of been from any album. His albums are basically mixtapes. If someone didn't know where to start I would recommend In A Major Way,The Hall Of Game, Charlie Hustle or My Ghetto Report Card. His secret is the beats always knock. I don't think I've ever heard him pick a weak beat.

WC and the MAAD Circle - Ain't a Damn Thing Changed. Curb Servin' is pretty good too.

King Tee - Act a Fool, At Your Own Risk, Tha Triflin Album, and IV Life

Above the Law - Their '90s output. Especially Livin' Like Hustlers, Vocally Pimpon' and Black Mafia Life. DJR already said "Uncle Sam's Curse," and i second that.

Compton's Most Wanted - It's a Compton Thing and Straight Checkin 'Em. Brew already said Music II Drive By, which is great too.

Def Jef - Poet With Soul and Soul Food

Funkytown Pros - Reachin' a Level of Assassination

Spice-1 - 187 He Wrote

I make no assumptions. It's West Coast for sure though.

I consider it West Coast Like Water for Chocolate in the absolute most glowingly positive way possible. I love love love the album. It's a context masterpiece, a surprise sonically, and just tip top shelf hiphop period.

It is 2004. I argue that this helped save West Coast rap music. It is by no means a perfect album but there are some straight up and down JAMS on here. At least half a dozen. And Alchemist did the intro so that's one right there.

Snoop Womack is good times too. This is one of those albums where the artist recorded like 50 songs and picked 20. And I'd argue that he missed a few between this and Blue Carpet Treatment.

Stuff like this didn't make either one:

Haha. Snoop was very clearly honoring Bobby Womack with the way he did the 'talking before the song to set it up'. He did a few times over this R&G time period. This is the most obvious example (and one of my favorite Snoop songs period):

Very underrated to this day and seems like he'd be up your alley, especially his first couple EPs, his shit with Muggs, Madlib, etc.

How the West was One with Rasco (Cali Agents) is a must too.

I know you are mostly looking for older stuff, but just want to confirm you've heard Cozz & Effect by Cozz. Also seems up your alley.

Oh and Eiht's recent stuff. Also criminally underrated.

I was a fan ever since he first appeared on Madlib's remix of "Definition Of Ill" came out, then he spat a verse on Zion I's "Critical" single, plus on Rasco's first album.

Listen to his stuff here for some of his newer stuff: https://PlanetAsia2.bandcamp.com/music
https://PlanetAsiaMedallions.bandcamp.com/releases
https://Planet-Asia.bandcamp.com
https://Wanderingworx.bandcamp.com/album/Black-Belt-Theatre
https://redlotusklan.bandcamp.com/album/the-Planet-Asia-Milano-Constantine-EP
https://Fanatik.bandcamp.com/album/Planet-Asia-EP
https://SoulProfessa.bandcamp.com/album/Cali-Agents-Fire-Ice

Then I copped his first album "Last Stand" which was slept on by many but the album with him and Rasco as The Cali Agents is dope too, the album "Grand Opening" & "Medicine" is good, but I couldn't get into the album he did with Dj Muggs though, but his collabo with Alchemist under the Durag Dynasty album is a killer ( https://duragdynasty.bandcamp.com ).

The Triflin' Album introduced The 'Liks, and T and Pooh made an absolute classic.

Paris took the Black Panther teaching serious and put out some heat worthy of Public Enemy. Sleeping With The Enemy was even better.

I checked this album out a few years back.

Truth is, back in the day in 95...me and my boy used to clown that Mix Tapes shit.

Thought that shit was wack.

Not really surprising at that age when you’re rocking nothing but Mobb Deep and Wu.

But when I checked it out...I was completely surprised at how dope that shit was.

Beats are crazy and I agree 100% with your take on their rhyming.

Me and my boy kind of went our separate ways because he started hanging around other cats and slipped into substance abuse.

We always remained cool though.

And after I was done listening to that album, I shot him a message telling him to check it out. He instantly remembered how we used to clown “I used to sell mix tapes...now I’m an MC!”

Long story short, that’s one of the last messages I got to send him because he ended up ODing shortly after.

Needless to say that album now has a very special place in my heart.

RIP Yusef. I went back and copped the CD a few years ago, off Ebay. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it. Rode with it in the car for like a month straight. Bus Stops, Mix Tapes, Good to Go (my favorite song by them), J to the I....like you said, it's a really fun album.

If you like Tha Dogg Pound and/or Tha Eastsidaz then this will be right up your alley, with Daz & Soopafly doing all the production and kat can spit too.

In response to Reply # 0

This is one of my favorites when it comes the Lootpack/Madlib affiliated artists, Kankick has produced for Wildchild, Decliame, OhNo, El Da Sensei, Kazi, a few others.

"From Artz Unknown" came out in 2001, I got it as a promo that year, and was about to give it to my cousin without even listening to it, but a year later I saw all the features on it, I was like hold up let me check this out and was blown away, I kept this album in heavy rotation for a year.

In response to Reply # 0

Dubb Union is Soopafly, Bad Lucc, & Damani; basically another off-branch of Snoop's homies, with production from Soopafly, Hi-Tek, and a few others, it's pretty much got that same vibe that Snoop would spit over.

In response to Reply # 0

Kazi is another Lootpack affiliate with one album with OhNo on production and rhyming duties titled "The Plague"; and then there is another album Kazi has with Madlib on production titled "Blackmarket Seminar"; you can't go wrong with either album.

92. "E-A-Ski "Past And Present""
In response to Reply # 0

E-A-Ski is more known as a producer than a rapper, he's okay at rhyming but this album is kind of like a producer's compilation with a few appearances from artists like E-40, MC Ren, Spice 1, Dr. Dre, etc.

I'm not going to say it's a classic but to me it's something to bump and bop ya head to.

Also I do recommend Spice 1's first two albums and of course MC Ren's stuff which is a no-brainer if you haven't checked those out already.

Really, you should check out any of his first four albums, but I think 'OG' is a good starting point for someone with an early 90s, East Coast ear.

119. "Self Scientific "The Self Science""
In response to Reply # 0

Self Scientific is rapper Chase Infinite & producer Dj Khalil, when I first heard them I thought they was a NYC or a Chicago rap group but nope they are from Cali.

The beats are very boom-bap jazzy but hard like Alchemist was during his Dilated People's days, Chase Infinite got dope conscious rhymes but don't come off too preachy, ya know.

They did do a second album but it wasn't as good as their first, I think Dj Khalil is apart of Dr. Dre's producer team now (has produced beats for 50 Cent, Game, Strong Arm Steady, Slaughterhouse, Talib Kweli, Drake, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson Paak, Nipsey Hussle, Bun B., etc.) so you should be familiar with his work.

Breeze was down with King Tee, his album came out back in 1989, homie could spit, the album had great production, a lot of uptempo tracks, if you like King Tee, Ice Cube, etc. then you would like his album "The Young Son Of No One", too bad he never release another album though.

1992 era East coast leaning beats with definite west coast lyrics. Ride Dat Monkey is the only song I skip. On In The Projects, Blacks Divided by Tracks, Slangin Dope and Criminal At Large are my favorites. I own this on vinyl because I love it so much.
