And Bubba doesn’t ruin it.

I saw a lot of people listing Little Brother but honestly, they don’t *sound* like a southern hip-hop group to me. They sound more like East Coast boom bap, so while I thought about listing Minstrel Show, it just doesn’t feel like a southern album to me.

All those albums, Deliverance definitely included, definitely feel like they represent the south to me.

but i would say Dirty Acres is probably their most southern rap album. Also sucks that you can't really put little brother on this list, cause none of their albums are really "Southern"

Excited for his next album, the singles he's dropped this year already are all dope. "Cludder" especially has been on constant rotation since it dropped. The Spillage Village album last year was my 2nd favorite of 2020, and DiCaprio 2 has a ton of good stuff on it.

I couldn't get into the Spillage Village album like that. Saw a ton of praise for it, it didn't click. I'll have to check it again.

I'm glad I'm not the only feeling these dudes, I hadn't seen much talk about them.

I'd encourage you to check Lute and GRIP if you haven't.

This is a GREAT album, easily the best out of the Dreamville crew.

I don’t like Cole’s music really... so probably my fav Dreamville related album including the boss man.

All more enjoyable than Cole to me.

There is no question he rap/flow his ass off.

I don't think he has released a full album that meets his potential though.

The first half or so of Dicaprio2 comes close though.

KRIT Wuz Here and Returnof4Eva have some of his best songs ever, but I always slightly preferred 4EvaNaDay. Just really enjoyed the concept and the way he executed it. That album was perfect to me.

No Juvie is a shame.
400 Degreez is the best nola hip hop album of all time.
It should be in all top 10 lists for best southern album of all time.
It’s a top 50 hip hop album of all time.

The HA beat should be mentioned in the greatest beats of all time discussion
along with the usual suspects.

I’ll do one album per artist for 10 and then list some extras.

OutKast - Aquemini
Juvenile - 400 Degreez
UGK - Ridin’ Dirty
Goodie Mob - Soul Food
8ball & MJG - Comin’ Out Hard
Devin the Dude - Just Tryin’ to Live
Jeezy - The Recession (surprised this one wasn’t mentioned... I think it’s the south’s Blueprint)
TI - Trap Musik
Wayne - Da Drought 3
Face - The Diary

Wayne was difficult...
The Carter (entirely produced by Mannie) was his proper reintroduction to the game. He had done the squad up tapes and I think he’d put out The Prefix (rapping 3/4s of the Black Album beats and a few other classic Jigga beats like where I’m from) but hadn’t done a Drama tape yet I don’t believe.
The Carter is a solid album, could hear the jump in skill, some of the wittiness and beginnings of the great song crafting he’d master by Carter III.
The Carter II is a solid album, it’s less about the production and more focus on the insane ZONE Wayne was in rhyming.
The Carter III is the MAINSTREAM masterpiece. This is the album where he put the jump up in rhyming skills and matched them with the hottest producers in the industry (everyone was trying to work with Wayne at this point in time). He took the lyrics and beats and great hooks he’d become known for and made a ton of hits and songs.
He’d put out a ton of mixtapes by this point and everyone was waiting for this album.
Remember — there were those Carter III session leaks... (quite a few YE joints I believe)
He went back to the drawing board and hit us with Carter III...
Radio joints: lollipop, Mrs officer, let the beat build, comfortable, got money, and the monster that was A MILLI.
I think Carter III was the most anticipated album since College Dropout or GRODT.
Saying all that... I’m gonna pick double disc mixtape Da Drought 3 lulz...

Some other:
Soulja Slim - Years Later
Mac - Shellshocked
Outlast - ATLIENS / Stankonia / Speakerboxx
TI - Urban Legend / King / Paper Trail
Devin - To Tha Xtreme
Hot Boys - Get It How U Live 2
BG - Choppa City (not Choppa City in the Ghetto)
Master P - Ghetto D / ice Cream Man
TRU - True 2 Da Game
Fiend - There’s One in Every Family
Mystikal - Unpredictable
Blaxuede - Dey Don’t Kno
Currensy - Pilot Talk

-----
Cameo
Soundshape Records

It probably wouldn't crack my top 50, but not that ridiculous when it birthed 1/4 of the sound.

The mixtapes are probably his best work, but The Carter when it dropped was a very nice project backed by full Mannie production. He elevated himself to a different level, and put himself in the conversation of best rapper alive (whether it was true or not).

I still go back to it more than any of his other studio albums.

Boomiverse isn't on the same level of the other two at all lol....I blame that on the fact that Big recorded that as a double album and we only got half of it because record labels.

Sigh.

The reason I like VLDR over SLL is partially because I was already a big fan of Phantogram & Little Dragon so the marriage sounded great to me.

Mostly I liked the mix of the Stankonia sound mixing in with dream pop that's on the record. I'd also argue the way VLDR goes dirty south at the end is better than the end of SLL because those songs kinda drags and don't sound as good today.

That's no dis, because I love both records overall.

To me SLL is 4.5 and VLDR is a 5.

I mostly know the NC/VA/DC stuff, Nola, ATL and Houston.

But of course other subregions like Memphis, Florida, the rest of Texas have their own sounds.
