"New KRS album - his 23rd"

KRS "Between Da Protests" dropped today https://krsone.bandcamp.com/album/between-da-protests-extended-edition KRS stays so underground, I think mainly on purpose that a lot of his releases unfortunately go unnoticed. To me that's a shame since his voice is so important to the culture so just wanted to mention it in here.

I'm loving the first few tracks that I've listened to so far. He also has put out 2 videos for this project already which he doesn't always do so looks like he's pushing this one more than some of the last few https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1naqZ1en8pg and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efMiGjf_bic

KRS does one himself. I know that's not what you meant, there aren't any big name producers but I'm liking some of the beats.

I tried to book KRS on my NPR show to promote one of these records. He demanded to be paid for the interview, to own the interview and to get final cut on the interview. Since all of those are in profound conflict with any kind of journalistic ethics, I had to say no.

That's too bad. I've also heard some stories of him being funny with money like with Domingo etc. The weird thing is KRS does a lot of interviews with small, no name people on Youtube after shows and stuff and I can't imagine he charges for that. Maybe he just has a problem with mainstream outlets like NPR, I don't know.

We hardly ever see him on big platforms, he's never done The Breakfast Club or Ebro or any big podcasts except Drink Champs and that one got him in a lot of trouble with the Bambaata stuff so maybe that is another reason he stays on the low. He did do Nick Cannon's show in the last year though, who knows.

I think he would thrive with his own podcast type outlet, he's always got a unique, philosophical take on almost everything.

There’s so much music out there that everybody has access to. Even just a couple beats from a producer that I know is great would have me excited to check out the album, even if the rest were made by unknowns.

He must not care though. Which is fine.

He reps that shit to the core and keeps it alive no matter what's going on elsewhere. His shit always comes straight from pioneering days of boom bap drums and minimal instrumentation. I love his conviction.

For people looking for nice beats, I'd say pay attention to the tracks produced by Mlody, namely "Stay Real", "Organize", "Boom Bye Bye" and "Black Black Black".

I like "Murder She Just Saw" and "Don't Fall For It" too.

I pretty much enjoy the whole album tho. I love the simple sounds of the 80s but with the same passion of the early days, and most songs on KRS albums deliver that. Long live the boom bap.

Yeah, it's a really good album, I keep up with all of KRS' stuff and I think this might be my favourite since The BDP Album in 2012. I really like "Opening Remarks", "Murder She Just Saw", "Stay Real" and "Free (The Book List)" Noboby but KRS would have a track like that talking about his favourite books for 4 minutes!

I've heard next to nothing.
For someone that loves everything above,
what post-1999 KRS-One should I check out?

I've heard people say 2003's "Keep Right" was worth checking out.

My favourite since 1998 would be "Prophets vs Profits", sometimes this is confused with "The Mix Tape" since they have some overlap. Here's a playlist of "Prophets vs Profits" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbuBpavobMk&list=PL3l3CTIjIb5gfHOIfdNjDocesSSlrFCmH

For albums I also would recommend "Kristyles", "The BDP Album", "Hip Hop Lives" with Marley Marl and "The Block Party" with Kid Capri https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_he7cwg3eN4&ab_channel=KRS-One

Here are a few really good individual songs that I love:

Gunnen Em Down https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeEzlPzQvJA&ab_channel=NekuRau

Life Interlude https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5W4LLG3hYc&ab_channel=KRS-One-Topic

Get Yourself Up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBL6yxmYd20&ab_channel=KRS-One-Topic

My Life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dv757cjKgHY&ab_channel=KRS-One-Topic

Hip Hop Lives https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRmbCa4FLnY&ab_channel=HipHopLivesToday

Underground https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DbYwsG3T5o&ab_channel=BQCS

I love KRS so could go on all day, hopefully you'll like some of the above.

I love the dude, but he needs an editor.

I think the pressure he went through in the 80's and 90's have affected his ability to trust other people - and that he needs collaborators to put out his best product.

He's INCREIBLY DOPE live, and he's super interesting in general.

But these records aren't for me.

That’s like saying Michael Jackson or Prince weren’t top 5 anymore after they fell out of their prime. He is simply out of his prime. Period.

He made the greatest diss record off all time and is one of the fathers of the golden era,
and he battled an entire borough. He doesn’t fall out of a top 5.

He has 7 classic albums.. 7!

But you have to list it because it is his highest selling album...

So by default it gets listed.

I don’t get your thought process.

If you list I Got Next as a classic and say the self-titled is better, then wouldn’t that make it a classic as well, giving him 8 in your opinion?

Or are simply saying neither of them are classic but feel the need to add his most popular album?

Doesn’t quite make sense.

Is John Coltrane....too old to be in someone's top 5 for jazz?

Or Basquiat...his shit was in the 80's so that means its too old to be great art?

That is sad. And laughable if it wasn't so damn ridiculous.

I clearly stated that rap music has been around long enough now that anyone can have 10 or more artists that are worthy of being in their top 10. KRS is not the only artist with an incredible body of work.

someone to replace him on her top 5 list... which makes sense.

Similar to if someone had Archibald in their b-ball top 5 until Lebron. Only so many slots in a top 5. It isn't that he's too old, it's that someone simply replaced him as time passed. The more time passes, the larger the pool gets from which we choose a Top 5.

Seems pretty simple to me.

>no argument here, but hip hop isn't 10 years old anymore.

Makes sense to me. People get bumped sometimes. Who replaced him in the 90's for you?
