"Conway the Machine- From a King to a God!!!!"

This album is phenomenal!!! I had to give it a few days to marinate. Just off the first listen I knew it was among the best of the Buffalo rap releases. To this point I had been impressed with Conway as an emcee, but not floored by any of his albums. This joint right here though!!!! Pure flames

This dethrones my previous favorite Supreme Blientele. Easily an early AOTY contender.

I’ll post my “take” on the album here that I posted in the Griselda thread:

“Seen Everything But Jesus” is the standout to me. I keep playing that one over and over. Kinda reminds me of some like 2002-03 underdog 50 Cent - in a good way. It was good to see him incorporate a strong hook, without losing that griminess.

Really like “Jesus Khrysis” too. Khrysis is just a monster - glad he got a beat on here.

Had already heard “Front Lines” but I’m glad they put it on here. That second verse is too good.

Obviously “Spurs 3” is a cant miss.

I like that he kept the core producers on here: Daringer, Beat Butcha, and Alchemist and brought in others whose production brings something a little different but still fit the aesthetic. From the legends Premo, Havoc, Sermon, and Rockwilder.....to Hit Boy who brought it too. I’m a fan of Dej Loaf’s features too. That song was a great one to have near the beginning of the album.

Only song I’ve been skipping is Anza, but part of the reason for that is that it’s sandwiched in between two of the best songs, and content wise and sonically it doesn’t really fit at that point in the album IMO. That’s my only complaint so far. Conway is having a great year

be loosely associated with a much, much better rapper (who also has a gimmick I admit)

Use that gimmick to get certain white "tastemaker" producer's attention...

add in super original shit like "hahaha hahaha" and gun adlibs.

Say outlandish shit in your rhymes so that nerds can feel tough while listening.

Boom. You're a star.

And even if you like this fantasy rap...I mean, as soon as Gibbs started spitting I was reminded "oh, you CAN rap like this and still be fresh and gimmick free"

Don't get me wrong, dude isn't bad. This is okay. But its crazy to me that more people can't see/talk honestly about the non-musical attraction of these guys.

I know I made that Boldly James thread, but there are others. My favorite Conway track just so happens to feature Mega...

Why does Conway deserve so much more love/praise than Mega? Or any other number of rappers out there who haven't gotten their flowers.

These dudes just aren't original at all, either. They have leveraged their various gimmicks and Alc connection to some nice production...that's about it.

And again, when guys like Gibbs or Meth or Mega rap alongside them? shiiit. You're reminded you were listening to the "beginners hour" at an open mic or some shit.

I'm glad yall are enjoying it I guess, but I don't get it. At all. And I would definitely like to see some rappers who are at least as good (if not a lot better) get more love.

Like what you like, but this is, by any definition not a gimmick. This is a movement. The way rap is being made is changing through what these guys are doing. It's like a whole aesthetic that is being adopted. It isn't just what they are doing and the rappers directly affiliated with them, that whole stripped down gutter sound is becoming more popular with many more artists.

Specifically to Conway, his flow is just so smooth on this album especially. I LOVE Gibbs, and probably consider him a better rapper than Conway, but I enjoy From a King to a God much more than Alfredo(and I love Alfredo).

Anybody co-sign that? Might give it a listen based on that alone.

I don't want to hype it up and compare it to anything else, but know that it's in that conversation.

...i think maybe cut these guys some slack ..they may not be as perfect as wu-tang was in 92-96, but they're pretty fuckin dope with what they're bringing ..plus like stone_phalanges said, they created an entire movement and have played a big part in bringing dope underground hip hop back into the light..

Roc Marciano made a big sacrifice but never fully got his due. His recent stuff is very fun for me to hear. Griselda pulled off what he didn’t and I am happy for them.

Timing is more important than gimmicks methinks. And anything that challenges the rap status quo and is good rapping has a shot with me. I got involved with these folks when I heard Mr. T. That’s the one that made me start paying attention after a buddy kept pushing me to listen to that album.

It made me happy that someone was showing up basically out of nowhere even trying to make this type of music. It’s not just them. There’s also Pounds448 for instance. And I like Roc and Frederick more, but they’re all still good with me. I like Stove god cooks too. And he finds a slightly new way to say he stepped on his drugs every 1.8 songs, but it’s fine. I don’t need every rapper to be everything at once. Only a few are good enough to pull that off. 2 of them have been dead for over 20 years.
