I wouldn't mind a bit of a wait... I'm still processing Untitled, haven't given it as much attention as I'd like to before moving on to the next.

FWIW, Mr Bongo is carrying the Sault and Cleo Sol records, although Untitled is pre-order and 5 is OOS. The Cleo Sol lp is still really expensive (48!) but at least you don't have to pay a lot for shipping.

I really enjoyed that record! Getting ready to do some work in the garage, will probably put it on as part of the day's soundtrack!

Soooo...I was gonna talk about this on the sault post, but I figure there's so much positive energy in there about the release, no need for my rants. But you've opened the door..ha.

I dig Sault.
I repeat, I really dig Sault.
The music, the secrecy about the band, the surprise drops, all of it.
5 was a great debut. 7 was...good.
Untitled I feel is REALLY good, but like you I haven't had time to really sit with it.
So now we're getting Untitled Part 2 in less than 3 months from that
and I'm like..."Can a brotha breathe?"

I get it. Who am I to complain about how and when an artist releases good music?
I guess coming from an editor's mentality, you never show EVERYTHING you have. It dilutes the message.
Have Part 2 come out 2021 in the Spring,
and tell me it wouldn't have MORE of an impact than right now?
Especially when people are just getting Untitled.

I also get that Sault is competing for attention. (c) Phonte
Artists release music in July, and by September we're not even talking about it anymore. Shoot, might not even be listening.

But unlike a majority of music that's out, Sault has a following.
We love the music. We're here. Exhale some and come back with something great.

There's a guy locally here in Chicago that has Cleo's LP the cheapest I've seen ($40). On a Monday I'll say I'm getting it. Come Friday I'll say, "I don't need that."

As far I know Sault had no shows scheduled before COVID, and it doesn't look like touring won't be a thing until late next year if we're lucky.

So if there's nothing else to do, why not go at it again?

If touring was a thing I'd 100% agree putting out 4 projects in 2 years is overkill but by the time they do any shows.....all 4 will be seen as "old" to most people.

Not saying it's the right move....just saying.

and like phenom noted, the pandemic almost certainly plays a role. But this is becoming a lot more common it seems, not just in mixtape culture but also beyond. The indie band Big Thief released two LPs last year and then a live EP when corona hit. Even though that Adrian Younge "Jazz is Dead" series is different artists, they're basically releasing one every two months and, because of Younge and ASM's production, there's a definite coherent sound throughout and it feels like one really large project.

I'm somewhat of this mind as well but I definitely get that the way we listen to and engage with music has changed and continues to change... there's more pressure than ever to stay in the public eye by making sure that you've got something new (which doesn't stay new for long). With a group like Sault, where so far every release has been really solid and where their fame is perhaps a bit unexpected, I'm not going to complain much and I'll figure out how to enjoy the music on my terms. But there's something to be said for the benefits of time and distance between releases, to let some anticipation build (and let folks rebuild their finances, lol).

Lots of good tracks came out this week:

Conway feat. Freddie Gibbs - Seen Everything But Jesus | https://open.spotify.com/track/72GnWBFCObITN83TRRsGfP?si=aY-2V9ULRCCJeY7ZipYRuw
Aesop Rock - The Gates | https://open.spotify.com/track/6VxDxbwKhTyJNDOpYZJTsz?si=cWBXypklSVaHRU1VpqY64Q
Action Bronson - Golden Eye - https://open.spotify.com/track/7AHZDaJM22hkQZ0xSOFsrT?si=tgLWioebR7K8V2eKVCUx-g
Spillage Village - Baptize | https://open.spotify.com/track/13ureYALF9sCGjSYiojXCB?si=MdiNuJm8RQmzqi2AFX3gmA
Elzhi - Light One Write One | https://open.spotify.com/track/5s4hhr7Sf7XEES2aAd01ah?si=-IPjXLqrRCyJElqUB2a5lQ
Homeboy Sandman - Trauma (prod. Quelle Chris) | https://open.spotify.com/track/2AKAszVZOLTRV3SaK2vDV2?si=B9yUswGaT3a71NVid1oEcg
Verbal Kent (feat. Chris Orrick fka Red Pill) - Bacon & Eggs | https://open.spotify.com/track/1cFapVAlgd5FwgvLmCgxxs?si=6XfqyQaeQ3qLH2kF5ibB1Q

The Conway album already got a few spins. Really digging it so far. Won't link everything but aside from the Gibbs track I'm also loving the intro, Fear of God, Lemon, Dough & Damani (2nd beat is FIRE), Juvenile Hell (wish we got a Havoc or P verse), Front Lines, Spurs 3

6. "loren oden (prod by Adrian Younge) - my heart, my love"

Adrian Younge is literally trying to rule 2020, lol...

I don't know anything about Loren Oden but I'd been following the singles as they dropped over the last few months, and gave this a spin this morning. I liked it a lot on first listen -- aside from a tune near the top that felt like a Marvin ripoff -- and Younge's production is, as normal, top-notch.

That said, I sometimes feel with his stuff that there often isn't a standout track or an arc to the albums he produces. Everything is always really good, always *sounds* super rich and right, but I rarely walk away humming something, or with something really stuck in my head. (The Spotify version of the album has instrumentals for the whole release which are super nice.)

I do think there's some stronger songs here though and I have a feeling over time they'll show themselves.

For those keeping track, in 2020 Younge's already released three JID albums (the anthology, Ayers, Valle) with another on the way (Azymuth), this Loren Oden record, an Angela Munoz lp I haven't checked yet, and a soundtrack with Ali Shaheed Muhammad (Run This Town). I haven't been buying them yet, might just wait until the end of the year and then do one giant sweep to properly support.

New joint called "Bad Habits" might be good enough to get the album out (where the money is with Usher, album cuts).

"Turntables" from a soundtrack

Listened once this morning - was underwhelmed, except for the last thirty seconds or so when shit got less predictable.

How, with everything going on, are smart, creative folks like Monae willing to turn in contrived/trite/predictable lyrics? Can someone throw away the tired words please and find life in some new ones?
