"Confession: I wasn't overly impressed with Dr. Dre's G Funk era"

For two reasons:

1. My dad was heavy into funk and I saw the songs as not huge transformations of tracks that I had been hearing for years. Its like how a lot of people felt with Diddy produced tracks with hits from the 80s.

2. Some of my favorite artists like De La Soul were sampling P Funk era tracks well before Dre.

I really really didn't put Dre on genius status until 2001 and after that.

Anyone else smell what I am saying?

Now that I'm older I can appreciate a more diverse range of sounds, but the content keeps me from revisiting most of Dre's stuff. And I just don't like him.

I was glad that LA had a sound that most of the country seemed to love but.....at that point (and all the way to this point) it would seem "off" for a NY'er like me to act like I "really" vibed to g-funk.

Sort of like now that I've been in Georgia since 2010 they got a form of sexual R&B (Clarence Carter "I been strokin'" , Marvin Sease, and apparently a WHOLE lot more artists) that I'm glad these southerners LOVE for their own identity, but....I can't pretend to "vibe" to that stuff.

...because the G Funk was corny to me ...Sonically, it was ok i guess, even though groups like EPMD has already gone there years before ..but the lyrical content was not just misogynistic, it was over the top misogynistic ...I'm still a fan of songs like Apache's "gangsta bitch" and Kool Keith smacking his bitch up didn't kill me ..But Dre and the crew was just over the top and that made the experience cringy, especially when there was tons of other shit to listen to.

By all accounts it was Dre and crew just hanging out in the studio, getting blunted and drunk. Sorta structured on the first half, but the second side is pretty much all "freestyle" battle shit (Lyrical Gangbang, Stranded on Death Row, High Powered)

And, you know, I like sample-based production, which Dre was still very much using on "The Chronic." It didn't matter that De La or Digital Underground or EPMD had sampling funk tracks; did used what he used and also made it sound dope.

If anything, he started to sort of lose me around 2001 (not even counting that "Aftermath" album), where the "soul" seemed to lacking. Everything is clean and immaculately mixed, but it doesn't have as much heart.

I loved that "hangin' in the studio but still structured" feel as well, 100%.

While I can agree with those saying that the misogyny is a liiiittle much, the production outweighs that shit IMO.

I also appreciate that they worked to recreate the samples rather than just looping them, giving them (Dre & Wolfe) a lot more room to be creative and add layers. The constant business of those beats is what I loved about that era. If it wasn't drums, or the sample, or the "g-funk whistle," or the constantly evolving keyboard (I think ?) going on throughout "Fuck Wit Dre Day," or a voice sample (the mad-laughter during one of the bridges on Dre Day), etc., there was always *something*, or multiple things, going on during every second of every song. I loved that.

And that leads me to ...

... my agreement with this as well. The beats felt empty and soulless. I still really *liked* a lot of his work during that era, but it didn't blow me away like The Chronic/Doggystyle/et al did during the Death Row era. Too much unused space. And I get that that was kinda the point, like obviously/clearly that's exactly what he was going for. And obviously it worked for him. But I don't have the same love and connection with that type of production as I do the gritty, busy beats of the g-funk era.

...when I first heard albums like The Chronic.

It isn't that I became less enthused when I learnt more about Parliament-Funkadelic so much as realizing Dre wasn't quite the virtuoso I believed him to be.

Either way, I still think it's comfortably some of the best Hip-Hop music ever made.

Agree with all of that. Same trajectory here - I'd have to imagine I'd have been let down, too had I heard the source material first.

Where the hip-hop track introduced me to the sampled music. It took a long time to get the idea of a form of producing as crate digging.

Probably his best incorporation of live instrumentation that he's ever used; perfectly re-created a whole bunch of breaks on there, and it never feels forced or "gimmicky." His best use of bridges within a song. The production is definitely one of the reasons why I think it's one of the top 10 to 15 albums of all time.

This is such an underrated album, musically & lyrically. Honestly, it's one of hip-hop's best.

I kinda cringe to think about the DOC going full on G-rap if he the accident hadn't happened and he kept his voice.

or maybe two. when artists started sampling late 90s and early 2000s hits. the thing is there are some songs i like because they do sample a song i know from that era. so i cant say im actually against it. it might be about how much they "flip" the sample but im not sure.

that said, g-funk is still dope.

I don't agree with your stance but it's interesting Dre is mostly perceived as a musical genius for his sampling but maybe the reason he's so lauded is that it sounded *new* and fresh and innovative to us (music fans at the time). His genius was more that he packaged the music so well. He sold an image of bravodo and cool that was captivating.

Kind of how Steve Jobs was seen as the great innovator of his time but the Macintosh stole its OS from Microsoft and Xerox. And the iPhone's technology was (I believe) created by Microsoft many years earlier. But Jobs knew how to sell an image and an aura and that's why we remember him and not PARC (the division at Xerox who invented the user interface the Macintosh's was based on.).

Yeah I liked Ohio Players, Gap Band, some Cameo, and all non-popular funk but when I was a kid all my relatives and my friends parents were listening to Parliament, Funkadelic, & Zapp cause it were the forerunners of the funk sound but I got tired of that shit real quick, so when it got old I was glad it went.

When kats sampling it like EPMD, etc. it was okay cause they gave it a fresh facelift to my ears but it wasn't overdone like Dre did it, and that's when everyone from the west was jumping the bandwagon to the point I just was hating on EVERY rapper from the west, east, & south that had even a tid bit of funk in their sound cause they all were trying to sample or even get musicians to play the funk sound.

To this day I can't listen to any George Clinton, Booty Collins, Zapp/Roger music at all, it just gives me a headache when I hear it.

I will say when Jermaine Dupri did Kris Kross' 2nd album "Da Bomb", he did his best imitation of Dre's "Chronic" sound and to me the beats were kind of aight but only on that album, the stuff he did for the Brat first album I wasn't feeling though.

They weren't layering samples and live bands the same way dre and quik was doing it. The groove is different even if the source is the same. I will say Dre is overhyped and people like Quik, Daz, and Battlecat have done way more to be considered "genius."

I also don't agree that Dre is overhyped. There's a reason Daz and other in-house producers who worked with him didn't do shit after they broke from Dre. And this is coming from someone who loves Daz and agrees that he's prolly a bit underrated. But I don't think he's anywhere near Dre level genius.

Battlecat and Quik tho deserve way more props than they get. And Warren G while we're on the subject. But Quik is a guy who is probably as talented as any producer in hip hop history but who sits in the shadow of Dre for whatever reasons.

I'm a huge Parliament Funkadelic fan tho. After that period, I just wasn't a huge fan of his music in general either. People still go crazy over "Next Episode" and "Still Dre" and I guess that's when mainstream truly started to lose me, because I will never understand why those beats are so lauded. Imo, his lack of soul and limitations were exposed when he moved on from P-Funk samples. All the funk, soul, and genius is pretty much built into those. Hell I'll take "Real Muthaphuckin G's" over a lot of Dre's career lol.

I don't know what's funnier, the last sentence or that he was asking his business partners to research Burning Man to buy. (the party he was referring to).

And I liked I Want It All more than 2001.

Now that wasn’t all the beats - part of it was I just liked Warren’s vibe and content more than Dre’s. Warren’s persona was likable and Dre’s wasn’t. IMO.

I agree that his persona is WHOLLY more likable than Dre's. By a million miles.

But his clunky ass, horrible rhymes are a turnoff. Wish there was a middle ground.

I Want It All was super fire. I prolly like it more than 2001 on balance, too. It's better front to back. But 2001 has higher highs.

He was just seemingly free styling on some of them. Not good. I still liked the songs though.

It’s a shame that he couldn’t get Snoop and Kurupt on that, which if I recall was Death Row’s doing. I liked the Twinz though.

I played the hell out of I Want It All when it came out. Still remember buying it on tape, because my car had a tape player and I still had a cassette Walkman.

Yep that was all Suge. Wouldn't sign Warren to Death Row then wouldn't let Snoop or Kurupt hop on Warren's album. So stupid. Fuck Suge.

Revisiting. My only complaints:

I Got that - Nah. No Ruff Ryders on a Warren G album.
I want It All Remix. Nah. Drag-On AGAIN? And Memph Bleek? Cmon.
Phats Bossi on TWO songs? “If We Give You a Chance” was so perfect otherwise.

Other than those complaints, the album is great.

I actually was then, and am now, so confused about his Ruff Ryders obsession on that album. Where did that come from ?

And UGGGHHHH Bossi's verse on "Chance" all but ruins it. Like you said, such a perfect song otherwise. There was zero reason to add anyone else to that track. Ricky is more than enough.

I looked for it on Spotify not too long ago and was bummed it wasn’t there. I’ve got the album, but downloading it to my phone from my prehistoric laptop is a tedious process at this point.

When I typed in “The Twinz” i couldn’t find them, guess I didn’t realize “Twinz” is the official name with no “the”.
