We're adjusting the feel of the restaurant I work at a lot while we have the time to do so and one of the things our chef asked for was little sprinklings of older hip-hop, inspired by when I let Tribe's "Oh My God (Remix)" into a ramshackle one night only playlist a few weeks ago. But I've been having a ton of trouble figuring out what's going to sound good over the Sonos system because of the wild fluctuation in mastering techniques. Like, it's bizarre to me that Digable Planets' "Where I'm From" is damn near mute while JVC Force's "Strong Island" is a total banger. Both sound great at home on a basic Klipsch 2.1 system, but at work some songs are practically non resonant.

I can rock "Bassline" by Mantronix but, ironically, "This Beat Kicks" by T La Rock is like attending a silent film.

One of the O.G.s (Original Gods) ripping it over some James Brown's and Kool & the Gang sampled funk. Just raw and rugged.

EST doesn't got enough credit. The Overlord of Fresh developed Wu-Tang/E-40 levels of slang back in the late '80s, and he could flow his ass off.

More Philly shit. Just hyped rhymes over a drum track and some scratches. Doesn't get much more late '80s than that.

Some self-produced heat by an MC who had to move from NY to California to get some shine. Dude has two dope albums, but his first single sets things off right.

>I miss when rappers would shut up and let the beat ride in
>the chorus hahaha

Ha. You know, I was essentially going to say the same thing in the next link I put up.

Hip-Hop is hook dependent now. It's unthinkable to now just let the beat speak for itself.

Last rapper to really commit to that sort of thing was Rakim. Even through the "Don't Sweat the Technique" album, the choruses to lots of his tracks were just the beat playing.

I remember the first time I heard YZ's "In Control Of Things" was on Marley Marl's "In Control Show" back in the fall of '89 and was mad I couldn't find the album for two years in stores back home.

Anyway, that beat was banging, and when Lil' Kim used it, I always think of YZ's version.

I like the song, but this version of the song the Jeep Mix was the one the djs played that got me into it; later on Izzy Ice ended up forming the duo "Da King & I" with their popular songs "Flip The Script" & "Krack The Weasel".

Unless we are talking about Kool G Rap, or EPMD, 80's rap sounds very dated to me. It's kind like proto-hiphop for me. I really can see myself revisiting most of the music of that era.

Even classics like 3 feet high and rising. It's ok as sort of experimental energetic music, but in some ways it doesn't even sound like hip hop to me. mid to late 80's hip-hop was in some sort of late stage stripped down disco flux.

Y'all old.

Being born in 78 was perfect. I was there for every classic era.
In the late 80s the only time real hip hop was on tv was once a day for 1 hour. So that was a special time.
Rap was just starting to become sample heavy, so listening to a new rap album put you on the funky stuff that had been forgotten. Then in the 90s it got better and better.
And yeah I'm getting old. I got a charley horse while I was bonkin my gal last night. It was hella embarrassing.

77. "You seriously have no idea how rhyming started. "
In response to Reply # 58

It was originally called disco rap. B-Boys and B-Girls started shouting out over
disco breaks, which eventually led to rhyming over disco breaks. This is why
MCs had a rapid flow when reciting lyrics. The rhythm of the rhyme had to match
the rhythm of the music.

This is before drum machines and drum kits, just a dj, two turntables and a MC
rhyming over breaks.

As rhyming progressed and music technology became more advanced, hip hop artists started programming beats to have a boom bap sound , and slowed the tempo of the beat. With the invention of the TR-808, Hip hop developed a signature sound.

Basically, sounds just graduated from one phase to another as hip hop evolved.

I would advise you to study and research the beginning of rhyming, so you can get a better understanding of how rhyming started, and who were the TRUE pioneers.

Back in the day there were a couple NYC public access shows that had acts come through and perform (or lip sync) their songs. Goldie's Hot Raps was one of them, RIP Goldie. This is a performance of the song in question from Goldie's Hot Raps. Puba was always a natural.

Yo Tone should I bring the rest of the crew?
Whip, Alpo, Big Just & Rich?

Late 80's the hustlers wanted to be like the rappers and the rappers wanted to be like the hustlers. I guess these brothers wanted to make their version of "The Symphony". The movie "Paid in Full" portrayed Azie as someone who wasn't violent and shied away from the spotlight. That would have made more sense if I hadn't heard the music he was making before Rich Porter and a few others in his crew were killed.
