"Armand Hammer - Shrines (2020)"

This just dropped today. I'm at the point where I pre-order blindly with these guys because every single Armand Hammer is great and this one is no exception. It's probably their most experimental work yet from a production standpoint. Some of these beats are surprisingly colorful, and others feel like their past dark sound has been driven to outer space. It's definitely the most progression in sound that they have had between records. Billy Woods and Elucid are both insanely good rappers. Off of my first listen, my favorite track is probably "Slew Foot", "Dead Cars" or "Flava Flav". I loved their last album, Paraffin, but I honestly think this one might be better. Definitely looking forward to digging into it more.

I'm still digesting it to this day. Masterpiece.

Elucid is a straight up GOAT to me at this point. I stan with zero shame.

I'm hyped for this- about to start.

I'm ready to say that these dudes are the best rap group now and were the best rap group of the 2010s. In addition to these great albums as Armand Hammer, Billy Woods has an amazing, consistently great discography, and Elucid's discog, while being less consistent overall, has incredible highs in stuff like For Madmen Only, Save Yourself and Valley Of Grace.

Oh I agree here. Each album is different too.

See I prefer Elucid and find his catalog to be much more consistent, but I'm still a huge Woods fan. To each his own, but like I said, I think Elucid is one of the greats. Crown his ass.

Either way, we're very lucky they do what they do.

I actually don't have a preference between the two as far as emceeing goes. They are both two of my favorite emcees ever at this point. I just think Woods has a better discography. When it comes to Elucid, I like Shit Don't Rhyme No More, No Edge Ups In Uganda and Seerance!, but I don't think those projects as are good as any of the Woods albums starting with History Will Absolve Me and on.

I will say that I think their best two solo projects (Save Yourself and Hiding Places), are on the same level of incredible. I seem to be the only one on the internet with that opinion because Hiding Places made Woods blow up in a way Elucid never has. I mean, he ended up on TIME magazine somehow haha.

I got into Woods through Elucid and used to like Elucid much more, but as I've grown to know Woods' style more, I've realized I like him just as much.

Oh I get it. Sometimes Billy will drop something that doesn't really grab me though. Like Terror Management. I just couldnt get into it. Doesn't happen with Elucid.

But...as you said...I'm a huge fan of both.

Actually, I'll do you one better. I think the top 3 releases between the two are Save Yourself, Cult Favorite, and Paraffin. I love Hiding Places, but I got it a slight notch below those probably. All subject to change of course.

And then you got older shit like Bird Eat Snake and older older shit like Sub Bass Diet? I could geek out in this thread man.

I actually discovered them separately. I copped History Will Absolve Me completely blind. Just based on a write up somewhere. Blew my mind.

The Lesson hipped me to Elucid.

So much content to dissect and study.
There are a bunch of rappers out now that are like a melting pot of influences,
the children of
CoFlow, Wu, CannOx, Freestyle Fellowship, even Camp Lo (their imaginative slang)
but the rappers aren’t young. They’re in their mid to late 30s.

Another group that’s put out a really good album this year with label ties to elucid is a group called SHRAPKNEL.

I’m loving what the backwoodz label is releasing.

I agree completely, def an album of the year contender and at this point, with 4 stellar albums, they are one of my favorite groups period.

And well shit, I can't wait for whatever that is. Also, Let's Go Inside My Astral Plane was dope man.

The way the beat changes to being extremely spacey/hazy, Fielded's eerie background vocals and the lyrics. That shit is incredible. What a way to end a song.

not sure if anyone here has come across noonchorus, they kind of sprung up during the start of all this quarantine as a platform for artists to put on live shows. I used it a couple times back in April/May but it seemed like people they knew in Nashville or something at the start, they've been branching out lately, it worked well, it can be kinda cool.

and there's a snippet of Charms on it, sounds like Earl (i think?) was playing it in the studio. it's right before the track with Navy Blue

Haram is incredible but I keep going back to Shrines. I'm hoping they go back to using different producers for the next album...and maybe even have moor mother on it for a full triumvirate album
