"White women singers from overseas..."

A lot them be sangin'.

No, I'm not saying only white women from overseas are the only white women that can sing but I'm realizing that most of the white women I listen to--and they are few--are NOT from the U.S. They're usually from Europe or Australia.

What's with that? Am I missing something? This is a serious, albeit an embarrassing question.

I recently came across this track from new Eglo Records artist Natalie Slade:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DflyzZJbq2g
She's based in Sydney, Australia, and her debut album will be produced by Hiatus Kaiyote's Simon Mavin.

Now, let me name a few names...

- Coco O. from Quadron/Robin Hannibal (Okay, she's not the best singer but you get the point)
...speaking of Mr. Hannibal
- Rhye
- Amy Winehouse
- Alice Russell
- Jessie Ware
- Nai Palm from Hiatus Kaiyote
- Kimbra
- Henrietta "Etta" Bond (worked with SiR on his November album)
- Charlotte Day Wilson (Worked with Daniel Caesar. She's from Canada)
- Deborah Jordan (backing vocalist for Bembe Segue. Worked with Silhouette Brown/2000black producers Dego and Kaidi Thatham.

I'm not a fan of Adele, Joss Stone, but some will want to include them, too.

I almost listed homegirl from Moonchild but it turns out she's an Iranian-American from Seattle.

Hmmm.

Thanks. I've heard "I Want You Around" multiple times--I actually Shazam'ed it-- but I never bothered to read about her or check out her other songs.

Oops!

I had to Google this. My bad.
https://www.npr.org/2013/03/02/173276751/rhye-men-of-mystery-find-a-feminine-sound
"Personally, I don't view myself as sounding like a woman," says Toronto-born Mike Milosh, the voice behind Rhye's sensual songs and one-half of what has now been revealed as an all-male duo. "I think I just have a soft quality to my voice, and then people immediately associate that with something extremely feminine."

She has a nice soothing voice.

You ain't about to catch her belting out powerful notes and doing runs or anything tho. Charlotte Day Wilson seems to be along these same lines from what I've heard.

That said, I've never been a Winehouse fan. Sounds like she can't get control of her mouth to me. I always found her more annoying than entertaining. I think I like 2 of her songs and one of them she didn't write.

Joss Stone can sing, but I never connected with any of her music... actually that's the case for most of the list outside of Nai Palm and Adele. Deborah Jordan and Alice Russell might be the best singers you mentioned imo.

I love Moonchild's aesthetic but ol girl's whispery voice just becomes annoying after so much. It's relaxing for about 5 minutes, but then I'm like gotdamn when are you gonna sing with your WHOLE voice? Lol.

Sorry champ. It's not very easy to impress me if we're gonna call somebody a "SANGer." Like I said, Coco has a nice soothing voice, but it's quite weak to me.

What I'm saying is that she absolutely belongs on the list where she's the only one designated as "not the best singer."
None of them are "sangas"
But you're talking like she's Alina.

Also, it doesn't matter that this point, but I meant "Hey Love" as the example, and not Favorite Star.

First line is "a lot of them be sangin."
She reiterates this in the comments.

>What I'm saying is that she absolutely belongs on the list
>where she's the only one designated as "not the best singer."
>None of them are "sangas"

I can't argue with that. In fact, I've said in this very post, that there are a few on the list that I don't think are great singers. Even my own contributions are just ppl I think the OP might like based on the list (although I do think Hannah Williams is nice). This Deborah Williams woman has exceptional voice control, great tone (Futuristica Family Sessions performance of 'Phoenix'). Alice Russell has a strong voice. I think she's talented. I also think all 3 of the women I just mentioned would sing Coco under the table LOL. Difference between you and I tho, is I'm 100% cool if you disagree with what I'm saying about these singers. *shrugs*

>But you're talking like she's Alina.

I had no idea who this Alina person was that you kept mentioning. I had to look her up. Having listening to a live clip and her studio recordings, no I'm absolutely not "talking like" Coco is Alina, because I wouldn't say Alina has a nice soothing voice. I'd say she can't sing and they put studio magic on her voice to give the impression that it's nice and soothing. Big difference. I never said Coco couldn't sing... nor would I. You're just taking it that way.

>Also, it doesn't matter that this point, but I meant "Hey
>Love" as the example, and not Favorite Star.

Hey man, I'm glad it impresses you. Her standing around singing with 4 black men don't make her a sanger to me, and I still hear her limitations in the performance. I really hate it for you if that triggers you or whatever, but I just don't think she's the best singer, but I've always been a fan of her.

Natalie’s song “Butterfly” from the same album really does it for me. I was a college student in ATL in 2006 and DJ Jamad featured this on one of his Afromentals mixtapes. People used to distribute those CDs on campus for free. I think I got my copy at a spoken word event. LOL.
https://youtu.be/phtUWHNuZ7M

I need to listen to this Secret Garden album and check out the other singer.
