(at least for some people "scoring" the battles)

They should at least stick to just playing instrumentals.

I think they originally were supposed to be more battle-ish but maybe changed course because it's the internet and folks don't always know how to behave? Feel like I read something about an early edition getting a bit wild but don't know who was on or what happened.

I don't think Tip would do it though.

I'd love Raphael Saadiq to log on and just run some hits. I think the only person that matches him is in jail...

I've seen people posit Maxwell vs. D but I think Max would wash D tbh

Pete said he'd be open to battle against Madlib on Torae's IG live a few weeks ago. I think he might have mentioned Tip, too.

I think it's more appropriate for Pete to go against a Premier but Primo already battled RZA so I'd doubt he'd do it.

How 'bout:

* Faith Evans vs. Mary J. Blige (They're from the same era/ran in the same circles) MJB is the queen and is more prolific, but Faith is a better singer, no?

* Large Pro vs. Q-Tip, though more folks would tune into a Pete Rock vs. Q-Tip

* Jay-Z vs. Nas. I'm serious, and I don't think this is unrealistic.

* Boyz II Men vs. Jodeci. DeVante and JoJo wouldn't participate but Dalvin and K-Ci would. Boyz II Men is a trio now so 2 people vs. 3 people wouldn't look too bad.

*Brandy vs. Monica. C'mon.

D'Angelo vs. Maxwell is so unrealistic. D'Angelo ain't getting on nobody's live.

25. "Change the format so DJs are actually playing the records"
In response to Reply # 0
Sat May-16-20 08:57 AM by bentagain

If the acts aren't going to actually perform the songs

I would rather have DJs playing the records

Swizz and Timbo should just hire 2 resident DJs, or do it themselves

have the battles

and leave the actual acts out of it

That way we can actually vote on which one is better

The one's I've watched...Preme vs RZA and Jilly vs Badu...

There's too much variation in how the songs are being presented

...but the consistent aspect is that they are just playing songs...

Let a real live DJ handle that.

They would get more profile for Verzus

announce the upcoming battle...a week or 2 out...and let fans vote on which records they think are in the top 20 for each act

Let the resident DJs put together their set lists

...and that is what gets streamed live...

You could even then have the acts in a post battle stream...giving the fans insight into the songs, inspiration, etc...

Right now, to clarify I do appreciate what they are doing, it's too much of a free for all...and I'm giving the nod to who does the better set

Not so much who's songs are better, better catalog, etc...

This would also allow them to vs acts that have passed away

Little Richard vs Chuck Berry
Bob Marley vs Peter Tosh
Tony Allen vs Hugh Masekela
Etc...

They need to tighten this shit up IMO

I'm not sitting through 3 hours of LUDAs and UH OHHs

is it’s interesting to see what they would pick themselves as their best songs (especially those last 5) but yeah I feel like with Erykah and Jill it really brought home how it can be kinda boring just to listen to them talk for long periods of time in between.

Babyface I dug because he had little funny or snarky stories in between that would into the next song and I don’t think Teddy took a whole lot of time in between songs either but like yeah...

I don’t think I would have much interest in random DJs spinning songs but I don’t think I want to just see artists play songs off of iTunes either...

I was extra hype I admit because I thought both Jill and Erykah would perform (or maybe at least E since she has quarantine concerts) so when they didn’t I was let down but of course there shouldn’t be an expectation of performing since ya know they are doing this for free...

Final point: this all made more sense when it was songwriters or producers battling because they can’t sing the songs and also you and the element of surprise by finding one they were the ones who did this or that song but when the actual artists themselves are battling it’s less interesting.

It's not going to be as easy to get marquee names to participate on a Sat night

and if there's not a way to get the fans more involved

I, personally, don't see myself sitting through 2 hours of talking to hear...maybe...an hour of music

Right now, the actual battle aspect isn't really being pushed

It's more like fireside chats

When folks have other options on Sat night, I don't think the current format will hold alot of interest

Like maybe reaching out to two DJ's who could be permanent or have a crew of six rotating DJ's who can add a level of polish would be good. Having the musicans in the event is great because even though they have access to more exposure than ever before with social media, it's rare to have them giving stories simply about their music. Maybe the DJ's could send a file of the set to the musicians. That way the event's audio will be high-quality but still allow the musicians to speak while on IG.

Have folks seen the Swizz vs Just Blaze battle?

That's what I'm hoping for

Room full of people

Just rocking to the music...but actually trying to win

If the acts aren't as skilled at spinning records...let a real live dj handle that

Most artists have 10 amazing surefire hits or great songs people know about.‬

‪20 is just gonna have to contain some filler while they wait for the last 5 straight fire tracks.‬

There are very few artists that pound for pound have 20 straight amazing songs in a battle situation.

Erykah did. Luda did.

I’m sure Jay and Beyoncé and Whitney would.

Of course Stevie would.

But I think 20 songs is too much for this format because more artists don’t have that.
