A lot of people will vote for the era where they were in High School.
That coming of age time when you were buying your own music, or when you got your first car, or hanging out with your friends in a basement.
It's hard to escape that.

I voted 90s by the way.
Specifically, 92-95 are my favorite years.
I was in high school from 93 to 96.

And, like you touched on, a lot of the music is tied to either big life milestones or just great memories of doing stupid shit with your friends while playing the music of the time, giving that music a nostalgic edge over the music of any other time period.

I can understand why objectively the 90s is considered the best decade but more albums from the 00s hold significance to me than those from the 90s. I can objectively say Illmatic and The Low End Theory are "greater", but The College Dropout, The Blueprint and Game Theory are more important to me personally.

For me albums that dropped and that I discovered between 04-07 (end of HS, early college) carry so much more nostalgia as that's when I was really coming into my own as a hip hop fan and figuring out what I liked and didn't. I learned there was more to rap than what I was hearing on the radio (Jay, Em, etc) and began to really cultivate my tastes.

I went by the decade in which they were drafted except for MJ. MJ really didn’t get his true shine until the 90’s. So that’s why I have it that way.

An oversight on Magic and Bird because they were drafted in ‘79, even though Magic won in his rookie season ‘79-‘80, and yes Steph was drafted in ‘09.

Honestly look at that list and compare it to 94-96.

That shit does NOT compete AT ALL.

You said Beneath The Surface...and you’re comparing that as a highlight against a year that had Liquid Swords? How?

99 was not a good year bruh.

Honestly, outside of The Roots and Mos Def...you can keep the rest of that shit.

It gets plenty for me. Most people that I know that has heard the record still plays this to this day.

Nobody... really?

>>Company Flow - Little Johnny from the Hospitul: Breaks &

Yeah these instrumentals went hard. I did get tired of it after a while only because I had a homeboy that pulled this out regularly to freestyle to. I put him on to no more instrumental albums.

Full Clip and All 4 tha Ca$h are worth the price of admission.

Keith is a legend... but oh well.

Way above average

This was Keith, but it was good as well.

Definitely better than good, but it’s apparent that you didn’t view this as a mediocre album.

This classic noisy Public Enemy. A lot of good tracks on this.

A very solid record

>Honestly look at that list and compare it to 94-96.

That was not the point. The discussion was about whether or not ‘99 was weak or not.

>You said Beneath The Surface...and you’re comparing that as
>a highlight against a year that had Liquid Swords? How?
>
>99 was not a good year bruh.

Who said anything about comparing it to Liquid Swords? I listed the solid to dope albums that were released. More than a few that you acknowledged that were dope.

It was weak by comparison.

After coming off those other years you don’t see how some people would be like “it’s cool but there aren’t classic classics”

That’s my point.

It was like a good album coming after a classic.

Shit ain’t bad but it doesn’t hit the same way.

That is how 99 was

Once again that was not the point of debate. Of course there are some years that are better than others. Fact is that were some good to great albums, even timeless records released in ‘99.

The statement was that 97-99 were great years and I disagreed with that by saying that was the drop off.

The reality is that there was no drop off.

So in our discussion we were talking about ‘99 in particular in which I put up the best records from that year, and in your own admission you said that more than a few were dope.

If you are truly honest ‘97-‘99 put out some of the best records of the decade.

I said a few were dope and only 2 were classics.

94-95-96 have no less than 10-20 classic in each one of those years.

Fuck are you talking about.

I will give you 98.

97 was cool

99 was BY FUCKING FAR the weakest year of the decade.

You’re trying to tell me there is no drop off?

How can that be when all we need to do is compare the Raekwon and GZA albums from 95 and 99.

How is that NOT a drop off?

There were more than two classics in ‘99.

Secondly there were NOT 10-20 classics in 94-96 per year.

‘90 was actuality the weakest of the decade.

The Raekwon/GZA argument is weak. You are using artists that really had no serious drop off from ‘95 to ‘99 to say that ‘99 was weak when it wasn’t.

In terms of quality ‘97-‘99 had better classics than ‘94-‘96.

You won’t even post albums from those years lol

Either way, you are clearly insane on this argument with saying GZA and Rae had no fall off between their 95 and 99 albums.

I’ll wait to see if anyone co-signs that bullshit

What are you talking about? I did the best albums from ‘99 and you were frontin’ on those. You said there were up to “20 classics” in ‘94, ‘95, ‘’96, but you never posted those. You are the only one trying to debate this and no one has co-signed a thing you have said... so yeah be done!!!!

There were no drop offs like I said. Those were dope albums. Your dumb ass is coming in here acting like those were wack albums. You won’t post anything because you know what you’re saying is way off base. Post these “10-20” classic albums in ‘94, ‘95, and ‘96. You won’t get that many in those years that’s why you won’t post them.

So that we can put this silly GZA/Raekwon example to rest... what do you have to say about The Carnival ‘97 and Miseducation’98 being better than The Score ‘96? How about Things Fall Apart ‘99 being better than Do You Want More?!!!??! ‘95 and Illadelph Halflife ‘96? Some drop off huh? Aquemini in ‘98 was such a huge drop off huh?

You shouldn’t have said that multiple records that I put up were dope then try to discredit the year. Real smart huh?

What I said that they were way above average. Those were not weak albums, and I will continue to stand by that statement. I don’t know why you’re still stuck on that, but you sound even dumber with each post.

What is dumb are these “10-20” classics that you kept hollering about and still no post of those albums in ‘94, ‘95, and ‘96. Also what is stupid is that you’re using this dumb GZA/Raekwon debate to say that the year was weak. You are the only idiot supporting this thinking that ‘97-‘99 were weak years with no classics or dope releases when you said differently when I posted those records.

You know a year can have classics and some dope albums and still be weaker than another year right?

And no one is posting because I am the only one dumb enough to back and forth with such a ridiculous statement.

Go ahead and make a poll and see what years were better.

In response to Reply # 71

1. 94-96 were better than 97-99 (or 95 v 99 in particular)
2. 97-99 were dope years (99 in particular)

1 and 2 can both be true (95 > 99, 99 was a dope year)

This back and forth has been going on too long and I'm too lazy to start over from square one but I don't think he's arguing anywhere that 99 was better than 95. He's saying there were some great albums released in 99 and in he thinks it was a great year.

99 can be a weaker year than 95 but still be great.

You can make a poll and 95 would surely win (or 94-96 over 97-99) but that doesn't necessarily prove that 99 was a weak year.

This happens so much with album releases where rather than focusing on the album itself (X album was good, great, etc) it's straight to (X album wasn't as good as Y).

He posted a lot of albums that "prove" that, at least in his opinion, 99 was a great year. If you want to make the argument strictly 95 v. 99 (or in particular GZA/Rae 95 v. GZA/Rae 99) go for it, but that doesn't mean he needs to be shamed for enjoying 99.

All that said, I love a lot of albums from 99, though I didn't "experience" either as I just started listening to hip hop in 99 and most of the albums I love from that year I didn't even discovery until years later, so I'm not gonna argue which year was better for hip hop.

I will say that looking at every year's worth of albums, 97 was a serious drop off in quality in my ears. From that year the only albums I can say I'd listen to in full are Life After Death, Vol.1 and One Day It Will All Make Sense. I also dig Wu-Tang Forever (though not a double-album's worth) and the KRS and Rakim albums.

96 probably has my strongest "top 10" while 93 and 94 both have albums that trump anything in 96, but aren't nearly as deep.

I started the argument so therefore it was my point.

I simply stated that 97 was the drop off, which YOU just agreed with.

I said 98 had some serious classics and that 99 was mediocre. And I said this all in comparison to 94-96.

Nowhere did I say 97-99 didn’t have any dope albums.

I NEVER said anything like that.

He carried on with how dope 99 was. This entire time I’m speaking directly to those years in comparison.

Period.

97-99 is nowhere close to 94-96.

That’s MY point that I made first. Don’t give a fuck what he was arguing after that because it’s irrelevant.

So what 99 had TFA...doesn’t mean the year as a whole is as good.

That has been my point this entire time.

Then I stopped and just wrote nonsense because he actually thinks Immobiliarity and Beneath the Surface are equal to Cuban Linx and Liquid Swords.

That statement alone should get him ignored from all further discussions which for me it has.

Others are telling you that ‘99 wasn’t as bad as you say it was. No matter what the year is there are usually 10-15 solid efforts with a few classics mixed in. Even if you look at the 10’s, there was a lot of dope stuff dropped this past decade. I didn’t listen to that much hip hop last decade outside of a couple of artists, but going back the check out things I overlooked then there is a lot to discover.

What I said and how I view the topic at hand is never going to change, just as how you view this won’t change for you either.

I’m generally interested in how people think 99 was a down year.

The bar is the bar.

Cuban Linx and Liquid Swords dropped in 95.

99 is competing with Beneath The Surface and Uncontrolled Substance?

Everything that came out other than TFA and BOBS was a step back.

I Am and Nastradamus...really?

It just seemed like everything was getting cheaper and cheaper.

Just saying the list he compiled has a ton of dopeness on it, on its own merits.

I don't disagree with you that a lot of the mainstream music was sounding cheaper. But the good albums were *really* good and among some of my all time favorites. That year had high highs, as evidence by bopper's list.

Hip Hop wasn't yet completely mainstream, but there was a sort of mainstream among Hip Hop fans.. those who had major label deals and videos on tv etc. Among those artists, it was still cool to be an INDIVIDUAL. You had a Slick Rick, a Biz Markie, an Ice-T, Roxanne Shante, Moni Love, 2-Live Crew, Queen Latifah, Sista Souljah, NWA, Public Enemy, Kwame, UMC's, Ultramagnetic MC's, X-Clan, Poor Righteous Teachers, PM Dawn, Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince...
and all of these artists co-existed. It was cool to have women in the mix and they could be prominent in the mix whether they were fully dressed or not. We had lyricists like Big Daddy Kane who could KILL you on the dance floor (It was still cool to sweat your ass off on the dance floor), lyricists who didn't dance like Kool G Rap and straight up party people like Kid N Play. That was a wonderful time. Everybody was creating their own world and it was all accepted.

That would be correct. I'm referring to individuality... as in a person or thing (group in this case) that distinguishes itself from others. The broad spectrum of styles, subject matter, personalities, etc is something I really miss being in mainstream Hip Hop.

I was on a different vibe as well mostly jazz and reggae. A majority of what I had heard at the time wasn’t too interesting in the early ‘10s so I stop looking for rap albums. I only checked for a couple of artists, so everything else was foreign knowledge to me. Going back to check out a few things from the past decade to properly assess it.

Rap in the late 80s was way different from rap in the late 80s

Ditto for rap in the late 90s compared to rap in the early 90s

These brackets should be more like 79-86, 87-94, 95-02, 03-12, 13-20

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)
