"2010 Hip Hop Releases, 10 Years Later"

Being stuck inside for the past month and the indefinite future I've been listening to an above average amount of music. There's only so much new stuff dropping, and in normal times I'm usually listening to older stuff more anyways, but what I've been wanting to do is do some revisiting of the last decade, starting with 2010. Just researching "best of" lists to put together 30ish albums reminded me of a few albums I hadn't listened to in years (some nearly a decade) and others I never gave a fair listen when it dropped.

Going to reply with a bunch of albums/EPs/mixtapes (feel free to add more obviously). Reply under each release with your general feelings and overall rating, how you feel the album aged, whether you still revisit it, and if you like it more/less/same as you did when it dropped.

I'll probably try to revisit one or two of these every day and come back with some thoughts.

How do you rate the year overall in comparison with the rest of the decade and all time? What albums would you call "classic" and what albums best define the year? What's your top 5-10 look like?

2010 was my last year of college and my transition between college and the "real world" was happening right before my ears. A lot of these albums represent my last summer before real adulthood and my first days in the working world.

The early 2010s in general are my last years of my prime music discovery years and it really shows when I look back at the top 5/10 lists I made at the end of each year. I'd put my favorite albums from this year above nearly any year in the rest of the decade, but that's probably a product of me becoming more and more an older, out of touch hip hop fan as the years went by.

MBDTF is a classic and definitely my favorite album fo the decade. The Big Boi, KRIT and Curren$y projects got a TON of play too. The rest of the albums on my top 10 list at the time were mostly 4 star albums to me with the exception of the last two, so overall I'd call this a great year in my books. A lot of these albums I've posted I haven't listened to since 2010, a few I never even listened to or listened once, didn't particular like it and never listened to again, so I'll practically be hearing them for the first time as I "re-listen".

I already know a few of these albums didn't age as well as I would have expected, and I like a bit less than I did 10 years ago. I'm hoping others (not on my top 10 list) have the opposite effect.

My Top 10 THEN:
1. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
2. Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty
3. Big K.R.I.T. - K.R.I.T. Wuz Here
4. Curren$y - Pilot Talk
5. Freddie Gibbs - Str8 Killa
6. Freeway & Jake One – The Stimulus Package
7. Nas & Damien Marley – Distant Relatives
8. The Roots - How I Got Over
9. Drake - Thank Me Later
10. Kno – Death Is Silent

and there’s probably no way I’ll relisten to all of these, but I will get to some and see if my opinions change.

A few of these, I’ll listen to for the first time....Gibbs, for sure. Not sure I listened to that Bun B album either. Really don’t remember hearing that Ghost album either, but I’m sure I at least heard some of it.

thanks for this post. i tried doing this last year but i was going to work my way back starting with 17. i got through like april of 2017 before i stopped. im trying to stay current and found it hard to do both. at least blind.

i think ill go through 2010 with ya instead. i think in 2010 i was still mostly staying up on new stuff but definitely wasnt doing a deep dive. pretty much just artists i knew or big names that caught my attention.

The fact that we got like 7 Madlib albums in 2010 is nuts. Medicine Show No 7: High Jazz dropped the day before my birthday, so getting to buy that the day of was dope.

Joe Budden's Mood Musik 4 waa may favorite project that year. Joe took the anger and really crafted them into songs and not just barfests.

Exile's AM/FM was such an awesome album and concept. I don't think he made another solo after this one.

Both of Tanya Morgan's solo debuts were really good with Pea's Gotta Have It and Don Cusack In High Fidelity.

Ludacris' Battle of the Sexes got a bunch of spins from me. It's too bad Def Jam kicked Shawnna off the album as her and Luda always had really good chemistry.

There’s people who think this is one of the best albums in rap history.

I got it at number 4 in Kanye’s discog.

I just never find myself going back to it.

It’s a bit of a choir to get through. The 9-13 stretch really runs off a cliff for me.

Devil thru Lost in the World (one of my fav Kanye songs) is just an amazing stretch of music, though the Chris Rock skit at the end of Blame Game got old after a few listen and Runaway drags on wayyyy too long, so I see your point about it being a bit of a choir. It's 13 tracks, but still nearly 70 minutes long, so not a short album in the least bit.

Runaway drags
Hell of a Life sucks
Chris Rock isn’t funny and drags the hell out of Blame Game
Lost In The World is aight but by then I just want the album to be over

I do actually like how it ends though.

by the contrast between what I perceived to be a progression in Kanye's actual rapping talent (and that of his ghostwriters I guess) while for the first time thinking that what he was actually saying was turning me off. I haven't listened to this in full since a few months after it came out.

There is some legit dope stuff on it. I found some of the over-praise for it pretty dumb and insulting to hip-hop in general, like how it was a "real" album.

As said above, comfortably his fourth best album.

The College Dropout is still my favorite Kanye album, and if I had to pick 2 albums of his to bring to a deserted island I'm probably packing Graduation with it.

Was a revelation that year. I wasn't sure he could pull it off on his own and he ended up dropping a real gem. Super enjoyable album, lot of really high highs, nothing I remember disliking.

This was in rotation for a long while back then. Haven't listened to it front to back in a long time but I should. I keep "Shine Blockas" in rotation. Also remember loving the 1-2 punch of "Hustle Blood" followed by "Be Still"

I thought Salaam laced that beat. I get the distaste for the hook I guess but I like it for what it is.

I actually don’t like Hustle Blood. I find that hook weird as hell. Likes he’s been messing with an underage girl and been waiting for her to turn 18 so they could get married?

Or has he not been messing with her and just waiting until he could?

Either way, the lyrics paired with how he sang it just came off *side eye* to me. Lol

Oh yeah...and I agree with You Ain’t No DJ because I fucking have Yelawolf

With the exception of Web 20/20 I didn't dislike anything on here, but there weren't any tracks here that I couldn't live without. It's all just really solid, but rarely am I randomly like "oh shit I gotta go back and check out <insert song title>" with this album. I guess The Day and Now Or Never would be my favorites, but at the time it was mostly because Phonte and Blu were two of my favorite rappers to listen to. I was disappointed when this dropped because it was so short (only 10 actual songs) and there were features on almost all the tracks.

I've warmed up on this a ton though, and rather than focusing on the fact that there aren't any DEFINITIVE Roots tracks on here to me personally, it's commendable for being consistenly good, and perhaps this is due to me not feeling the two albums dropped since, but I definitely underrated this one when it dropped. Biggest change over the years is how much more I like the John Legend tracks. Their best album of the 2010s for me but middle of the road in their discography, which is a great place to be considering how strong their catalog is.

... give it quite as high a rating personally. It's like a 6.5 to me, maybe a 7. Both then and now.

Like you said, it's really consistent but there just aren't many highs. But I like the overall vibe and flow of the album.

And, like you, my favorites were songs w/Blu & Phonte involved (Radio Daze & Now or Never, namely).

Really didn’t like this album. It’s cool and I probably would’ve liked it if it was a Roots and Friends album.

The hooks are tough to sit through for the most part.

But I like all of the foundations of the songs.

If it was the same beats with mostly Thought and different hooks...lol

Never heard of this at the time, HiiiPower was my intro to Kendrick so I didn't check for this until after being blown away by Section.80. Obviously this pails in comparison to the albums that followed (which are all some of the best of the decade) but this is a nice little tape. Opposites Attract is one of my favorite Kendrick tracks period. Wish The Heart Pt. 2 was available on Spotify.

I LOVED So Far Gone so I had high expectations for this one. As a result I was a bit disappointed, but I still enjoyed it overall. Whereas I really enjoyed the singing on So Far Gone I thought the singing tracks on here were predominantly garbage. I love Find Your Love but hated Shut It Down and Cece's Interlude. Light Up, Fancy and Up All Night were played a ton that summer. Speaking of Up All Night, everyone always talks up Nicki's verse on Monster but she actually kills her verse here as well.

The only song on here I listen to regularly these days is The Resistance. I wish Drake would have put out an album full of tracks like The Resistance, The Calm, Fear, etc. Instead we get bloated messes to try and game the streaming plays system and his singing really hasn't gotten better at all while his rapping has fallen off for sure.

But this one brings me back for sure. Resistance thru Fancy is a great run of tracks, Light Up still goes, the track with Wayne is good, and Find Your Love is still a jam in my books. I don't know how to describe modern Drake, but his production is just so empty and missing oomph and he raps a certain way that I just can't get into for the most part. These early Drake albums (So Far Gone thru Nothing Was the Same) are the only ones I really enjoy, listening to this reminds me of how bullish I was on Drake and would defend him as a rapper and songwriter endlessly in The Lesson whenever people wanted to dismiss him as a trash lyricist and spotty singer.

A whole lot of days that started with "The Resistance" and usually had "Light Up" played towards the end of the day because it always reminded me of golden hour sunsets for some reason.

freeway kind of brings it down. his voice can be too much at times.

the songs i had kept in rotation were throw your hands up, free people and stimulus outro. stimulus outro is still dope to me.

the beats on the album are great. listening to it again i should had kept She Makes Me Feel Alright, Sho' Nuff and Money in rotation as well. theres a few others that have great beats but the hooks or verses kinda bring them down for me.

overall i think its 4.5/5

Very good. Absolutely incredible production by Jake One. Freeway kills this, though I admittedly prefer Free in smaller doses due to his voice (can be grating over a long stretch) so while I haven't particularly given this any full spins in a long time up until now, I always considered this as one of the better releases of the decade, def in my top 50. Rhymesayers had been on fire these days. Atmosphere hadn't fallen off yet, Brother Ali, Evidence, etc. This is one of their best releases for sure, but I hate it for setting too high of expectations for Ali's first album with Jake One.

A bit spotty in the second half, but that first half is fire.

I listened to it for the first time on my honeymoon haha that's prolly why. Maybe it had just been added to Spotify at that time or something. Cuz something randomly hipped me to its existence and I checked it out and loved it.

This was one of the albums that kind of inspired me to go back and give a bunch of 2010 albums a re-listen. I was always pretty underwhelmed by Roc, this album especially since it got a lot of hype around here. He always bored me as an emcee. But that Stove God Cooks album really impressed me and got me thinking I should go back and give Roc another shot with older ears.

So what about this album was so influential (production? rap style?) and what artists/albums did it influence?

i feel like a lot of the hip hop i've been enjoying in the mid to latter part of the decade (griselda, mach hommy, earl, 38 spesh, billy woods) have either cited roc as a favorite mc of theirs or followed in his footsteps. not saying roc invented the wheel or anything, but production-wise (loops/minimal drums) and understated vocal approach (which i got get might be an acquired taste, it was for me too on my first couple of listens), Roc seemed to either directly or indirectly inspire alot of the past decade's "underground revival". I think Marcberg and the reception it got is responsible for a lot of it

Basically just gonna reiterate what everyone else is saying, a letdown. It was inevitable anything less than greatness following Tronic was going to be underwhelming. Deadly Medley was a banger, but Distortion was, and still is, my SHIT.

It's weird this came AFTER Tronic. If you gave me Popular Demand, Tronic and Album of the Year with virgin ears and I listened to them in random order I would have guess this album would have came between PD and Tronic.

It's a fine album. Not bad at all, a few tracks worthy of a playlist, but otherwise just underwhelming after an amazing release a few years prior. Also feel like there's too much going on drum-wise.

Side note: I never liked the album cover, and much preferred the original/earlier leaked art: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KDvzKXcML4E/S_tYvHYkGJI/AAAAAAAADTU/rVhZAe0_KDk/s1600/BlackMilkAlbumOfTheYear.jpg

When this came out I was carpooling to work with a kid around my age with similar music tastes just to save on gas. And I'll never forget he had the same exact gripe as we listened to it for the first time on our 1.5 hours back and forth to work that day. Pretty sure he used basically your exact verbiage too "there's too much going on with the drums"

I guess I agree although I've never independently come up with that same complaint.

Didn't have too high of expectations when I went into this one. Wasn't very high on Nas at this point after a string of disappointing releases (I've warmed up on Untitled since) and I never heard any of Marley's solo stuff, just a few features. This feels mostly like a Damian Marley album with Nas features on each song. It's solid, I think the low expectations always helped with my enjoyment. It's unique as a hip hop album given the Marley flavor so that helps it stand out. I don't think I've ever listened to it in full since I first got into it until now, but Nah Mean, As We Enter and Count Your Blessings are rarely skipped when they come up on shuffle.

A solid album. As far as Nas' catalog it's a cool addition, but I never went as far as digging into any more of Damian Marley's solo stuff, and I think that's saying something.

This album is, to me, easily the best of the year and a Top 10 if not Top 5 of the decade.

Fuck it. It’s that dope to me.

How they pulled the mixture off was perfect.

The production was top notch.

Nas sounded GREAT on everything.

The content was great.

And I believe this experience made Nas a better live performer.

We always wanted a complete Nas album with great, cohesive production and you got it and don’t appreciate it.

Nah Mean doesn’t give you the ugly face to this day??!!

And Damian absolutely kills his performance and outshines Nas on a few tracks.

This was my summer soundtrack. I actually couldn't believe how much I liked this at the time since I stopped smoking weed with any real frequency a year prior, so looking back had this album came out a few years earlier during my peak stoner years I may have called this a 5 star classic on these boards.

With Curren$y I feel like your favorite projects of his will be the ones you heard first, because after you get to the 5th, 6th, 7th, etc release you realize you've already heard all of these raps before. There's only so many songs about weed, whips and women you can hear from one artist before you need them to give you literally anything else. But this was my first Curren$y album and as far as I knew this was his first time hitting any of these topics. It was fresh at the time, Ski's production was at times atmospheric, other times cinematic, but almost always dope.

If this thing went any longer than it did it would have likely overstayed its welcome. It's a snug 40-ish minutes and has enough features sprinkled throughout that Curren$y's minimal breadth of topics isn't too exposed here, but give it a few years and even I wasn't even checking for him at all, which is crazy considering how much I loved this album at the time.

My favorite songs basically haven't changed: Breakfast, King Kong and Skybourne. Audio Dope II, Roasted and Life Under The Scope are still very enjoyable. Chilled Coughphee was and still is the most skippable track, followed by The Hangover (I think this was the first time I saw Mikey Rocks going by Sir Michael Rocks which def made me roll my eyes in 2010).

Overall still a really enjoyable listen, but definitely not the nearly-classic album it was to me when it dropped.

There’s nothing wrong with those beats or rhymes, there’s some good features, there’s some really good songs. But that chemistry/magic/feel that LB usually has as much as any group in history is largely missing from this one.

Man I hated this album when it dropped. LB were 3 for 3 and my favorite non-Roots group for sure. This felt so much less cohesive than all their other albums and given the title gave me the impression most of this were scraps from Getback sessions. I don't know if that's true or not but I can't adjust my ears or mind 10 years ago. Tigallo For Dolo was an instant classic, still one of my favorite Phonte verses. It was at that point that I was really salivating for a Tigallo solo album.

I was definitely a little too hard on this album when it dropped, it's not as bad as I remember. Disappointment really clouded my initial review, but that's not to say this is anything I'm going to add to my rotation. The beats here are the worst I've heard Tay and Poo rap on. The Love Movement comparison is spot on, and like Tribe, they came back and remedied their previous brick and ensured that they didn't go out with a sub-par album.

i was kind of avoiding coming back to it. i kinda remembered it but not really. i looked at the track listing and no song jumped at me.

when i put it on, i was like ah okay...pretty dope. halfway through ...this might be great. then poof. fell a few notches.

first 6 tracks are pretty great to me. definitely not the sound i would go to for a little brother album but coming back to it i kind of really liked those songs. after that it was pretty much all skip zone.

got it at 4/5 but because of the inconsistency i think 3.5/5 is a fairer score.

Thought this album was fine when it dropped, there were a few tracks on here that I relistened to (Cinderella Man stands out) but looking back I think I was mostly just stoked he ditched the "accent" from Relapse. But while he dropped the accent he introduced SCREAMING EM and begun his fascination with overly forced punchlines (____ like a _____) and adding various forms of "get it?" as if we needed any help decoding the cringe.

That Proof tribute it horrific. My lord is that one of the worst hooks ever. I was cool with the Wayne song when this came out but now it makes my ears bleed. Always hated the Pink track. The first 3 tracks are cool, the aforementioned Cinderella Man is probably still my favorite, and Almost Famous is good besides the screaming.

I actually prefer Relapse to this by a wide margin, Relapse being the only Em album since his return that I actually consider good in any sense. Weird accent Em > screaming Em.

It's not Revival, at least.

Which by that point was the most endearing thing about his music, as he'd clearly more or less run out of interesting things to say by then, and had apparently decided that he no longer wanted to rap over good beats.

I agree with you re: being happy in the moment that he'd stopped with the awkward accent(s). But in hindsight (and I realized this relatively quickly after Recovery came out), Relapse is the FAR superior album on just about every level.

It never made sense to me that the EP was Str8 Killa and the mixtape was Str8 Killa No Filla when the mixtape contains all the additional tracks and is more likely to have "filla." From what I remember, I wasn't into most of the mixtape tracks, but the 8-track EP was fire. National Anthem was a top 10 favorite rap track from the decade.

Str8 Killa No Filla isn't on Spotify and I don't have it saved anywhere so I can only listen to the EP at the moment. It's still fire. Kicks off with an absolute banger and while I don't love Big Kill, his energy is undeniable. It's the only place he fits on this tracklist. National Anthem still bangs as does Personal OG and Rock Bottom, which Bun B kills. Rep 2 The Fullest and Live By The Game are the only tracks here I didn't miss, but given it's an 8-track project that's 25% so my initial rating was a tad too high.

Production-wise, Kno was towards the very top of my list around this time. CunninLynguists projects were instant-listens ever since the moment I heard A Piece of Strange, and I always wanted to see Kno branch out and produce albums by other artists. I was excited for his solo, but I wasn't surprised when it fell a little flat to me due to him being an average emcee at best. A verse of two sprinkled throughout a CL album is more than okay, but Kno wasn't able to carry the load on the mic all by himself. The production here was solid, albeit not touching Dirty Acres (maybe my fav CL production), but lyrically it was lacking and got too emo and repetitive thematically.

This album is basically everything I remember it being. Cool production with infectious vocal samples that Kno started frequently doing starting with Dirty Acres and continued with the first few Strange Journey projects. It's a moody album, and probably works better in the colder months (it's warming up to the 60s here today), so this isn't hitting the way it should, but it's a solid album. Making me want to go listen to some CL if anything. What has Kno been up to recently?

Also, holy shit, I completely forgot about Thee Tom Hardy haha.

In response to Reply # 49

One being that it'd been 10 years since the first so the buildup of expectations pretty much guaranteed a letdown.

But the other was that the music just wasn't good, especially in light of Train of Thought. And on a personal level, ToT is my all time favorite album, any genre, so RE had pretty lofty expectations to live up to.

That being the case, I gave this album several chances and just could never get into it, like at all. Outside of "In This World" and "Just Begun" there really isn't much memorable here at all. And it's mostly the production IMO.

I remember being really nervous about what the production would sound like considering Hi-Tek's evolution/progression since Train of Thought and unfortunately my fears were realized for the most part. No other album from anyone sounds like Train of Thought and unfortunately this one didn't either. By no means did I want a rehash but I often feel like production is the weak link on Kweli's projects (hey Nas) and was hoping that this might buck that trend.

I wish Hi-Tek never fell into favor w/Dre. Cuz it felt like Dre's influence weighed far too heavily on Tek and as a result the unique, full/busy yet understated productions we were used to from him became sparse and empty like the Dre productions of that time period.

And the latter is largely what we got on RPM, unfortunately. Too bad too cuz Kweli was spitting, per usual, on that album. The beats just couldn't keep up.

And considering the insane run he was on from his early Rawkus work through his first Hi-Teknology joint (the 2nd was OK, too), that's something I never thought I'd say about a Hi-Tek produced album. Some of his early stuff (2000 Seasons, The Manifesto, 1-9-9-9, Sun God, etc. etc. etc.) are among my absolute favorite beats of all time .. and that's before even considering ToT being my favorite *album* of all time.

In other words he was on the short list of my favorite producers ever and could've made a damn strong case for GOAT had he kept up that trajectory, or even anything approaching that trajectory he was on from whatever it was, 1996/97 through 2003ish.

between Kweli, Hi-Tek and Mos Def during that time period. For Mos Def, that bootleg "We Are Hip Hop, Me, You, Everybody" compilation (that features a lot of Kweli and Hi-Tek) comes to mind because I was just listening to it a few weeks ago.

It does have the vintage RE feel to it. Tho I'd still argue it's a minor step down, production-wise, from the level of quality we expected from Tek in his prime .. but yea, this track overall is really good and I did like it a lot at the time.

I was simultaneously all-in on the OF hype and not impressed at all with the the majority of their first string of mixtapes/albums. I thought they had great promise and loved their energy and the DIY approach but these projects are spotty and in hindsight I really only gave a fuck about Tyler and Earl.

EARL was full of shock rap but as a 16 year old emcee, Earl was the guy I was looking forward to the most. Add that with the mystery of what his whereabouts were at the time and he was one of the more captivating new artists in hip hop at the beginning of the decade.

This one didn't particularly age that great. 10 years older and the horrorcore is more cringy than edgy, but his technical talent is undeniable. Really the only one of these songs I still find myself going back to is Luper, while Earl is a solid track as well and there are several others with great rhymes skill-wise, but the content doesn't hold up.

Never listened to this before. Hadn't even heard of Danny Brown until XXX and my first time listening to him was Old. I could never get past his voice for full album listens. He's def a great rapper from a technical standpoint. I feel like he doesn't go over the top with the wackiness/shock value of his later albums, this one seems "tamer" in comparison. Several socially conscious tracks on here as well. Did I miss this on his later albums or is this not as prevalent?

I liked Exotic, Nowhere 2 Go, Juno, Thank God. This album cover is horrific! Overall this was solid, maybe it's time to give Danny Brown another shot. Where do Danny Brown fans rank this among the rest of his catalog?

Didn't hear of this in 2010, went back and listened a few years ago when I started my dive into Apollo's catalog. This is probably my third favorite of his non-instrumental albums behind Mona Lisa and Dice Game.

Like most Apollo Brown albums, the beats overshadow the rhymes, and even then, you really have to be into the Apollo style to be able to listen to an entire project without getting bored. He's one of those producers who you can pick out a beat by his within 10 seconds, he is kind of formulaic, even starting with the record static at the beginning of so many of his beats. That's not to say it's bad, I really enjoy the style and if he's going to stay in one lane it may as well be this one, but perhaps I'd rather it in 30-40 minute doses rather than a full hour.

I like this one, but not an album I'll ever find myself listening to in full. Would love an instrumental version. Gas Mask, The Melody and Desperation are jams.

Wanted to start with an album that I definitely haven't listened to at all since it dropped. This one is probably one I listened to once, and since I don't remember disliking it I have to imagine I didn't feel too strongly one way or another about it. Skyzoo was still a fairly new artist at the time but I hadn't really got swept up in whatever hype he had, and this album didn't make me want to check him out any further.

It's cool to see a few rapper + producer albums from this year, I feel like these got more and more popular later in the decade, a trend I am fully on board with. Skyzoo in particular has benefited a lot using this approach, his albums with Apollo Brown and Pete Rock the last few years were both albums that finally turned me around on Skyzoo.

After a re-listen my reaction hasn't changed much. A few tracks I'll add to a 2010 playlist (Speakers On Blast, #Allaboutthat) but otherwise Skyzoo isn't moving the needle for me here. He's rapping the same monotone flow throughout the album and even his hooks have predominantly the same inflection to them. As far as the production goes I didn't love it. I like the more soulful beats, but at times it's a less enjoyable synthy phase Black Milk.

the production is great obviously but the raps are kind of hit or miss to me. definitely enjoy tracks with features more. definitely worth a listen though.

I count the title track, Coroner Music, and Outside as three of my favorite songs of the '10s. Those are all hard as penitentiary steel. Plus songs like Hood Sentence, Cali Hills, and 100 Styles are all amazing as well.

just listened again and its pretty forgettable to me still. not one track that i have to keep in rotation. Live From Roscoe's is probably my favorite track on it.

overall 4/5 but maybe more like 3.5 not bad but not a must listen.

I kinda get what you're saying tho. It's good, nothing bad about it, but nothing memorable.

I don't necessarily agree just saying I get your point. But that would be indicative of a 6 or 7 score, as opposed to an 8. (You were using a scale of 5 but I think a 10 scale is a better measure, personally).

I'd love to have you as a professor tho. "Your essay was not persuasive or compelling at all, and may have been plagiarized; but it had no grammar mistakes soooo ... 80% !" lol.

ive seen some people on reddit grade similarly. i forgot how they explained it but it kind of made sense and help me feel justified to some degree. let me give it a shot. pretty much music worth checking out falls within 5-3.

5 - classic
music i cant live without and i want to make sure i keep. i would recommend this music to anyone that is interested. i love the beat, vocals and hook. i kind of expect everyone to at least like these. this is the music i would build my favorites playlists from. somewhat rare score, some songs might get it on first listen but around 25% of those will be bumped down after more listens.

4.5 - great
some parts of the songs i love but more than likely theres a hook or beat that brings it down. would like to keep this music but i would cut it if needed. if i enjoy the song it will get this score. these songs would have the "deep" cuts from artists that i love. they might not make it to an essential playlist but if you love the artist you will want this music. probably 25% of songs will be bumped up after more listens and 25% will be bumped down.

4 - good
i can rock with it but i might skip it sometimes. theres nothing wrong with it but probably not exactly for me. i will get tired of it after a few listens. i can recognize that some people might have it as a 5. most songs start here and i score up or down depending on how much i like it. only make playlists that dont have much to work with or for completists purposes. probably 25% of songs will be bumped up after more listens and 25% will be bumped down.

3.5 - forgettable
there might be a dope beat that carries a wack hook and decent vocals. or maybe a super dope verse with decent beat and hook. maybe a bad hook brings down a good song. these might be songs that i didnt "get" when i first listened to them. overall i just dont enjoy them. i can see some people liking these songs but would be confused if they loved them. maybe 10% of these songs will get bumped up on repeat listens.

3 - skip
heard it once and it was enough. wouldnt recommend it to others. this is the bottom score for most music i dont enjoy. i probably wont revisit this music unless im re-listening to full albums. maybe 10% of these songs will get bumped up on repeat listens.

2 - bad
might skip halfway through and definitely want to avoid moving forward. will probably ignore future releases. rare score, i have to truly dislike the beat, the vocals and hook.

1 - trash
why was this released. i did not understand at all. im not sure i have ever given a song this score.

for this album my overall impression was 3.5/5. hard to give murs or 9th wonder a score lower than 3.5 on anything they do. theyre good/great artists. the actual score i gave it is just under a 4/5. i think on more listens i would bring it down thats why im calling it a 3.5/5

Song Avg Score - Beat/Vocals/Hook
Fornever 4 - 4.5/4/4
The Lick 4 - 4/4/4
Asian Girl 3.5 - 3.5/3.5/3.5
Let Me Talk 4 - 4/4/4
Cigarettes and Liquor 4.5 - 4.5/4.5/4.5
Vikki Veil 4 - 4/4/4
I Used to Love Her (Again) 3.5 -3.5/4/3.5
The Problem Is... 3.5 -3.5/3.5/3.5
West Coast Cinderella 4 - 4/4/4
Live From Roscoe's 4.5 - 4.5/4.5/4.5

so only cigarettes and liquor and live from roscoes has a chance to stay in permanent rotation. i know cigarettes and liquor did stay in rotation but overall it just isnt a classic song for me so i brought it down. live from roscoes is one of those songs that i might have rated at 4 on first listen but after listening yesterday i bumped it up. it might get to a 5 on more listens. i dont expect any others to do so.

Never checked Homeboy Sandman until seeing him open for Brother Ali during the Mourning in America tour. When I saw his name posted I actually always figured he with the dude with a similar name from the Re-Up Gang.

Was super into his live performance. Like Evidence, the calmer delivery really translates well to a live show. He's never losing breath or missing words or putting too much energy into the performance, so it made me a fan and I went back and checked out this album and First of a Living Breed. I dug the sound, but not as much as I liked the live performance.

Overall it's a cool record, as several of Sandman's albums I've checked out are, but I really have to be in the right mood to get into them.

I interviewed Baatin a few years before he died and was happy that he was on his way back. I had been living in Korea for about year when that came out. Played it a lot during late spring.

I still keep it in rotation from time to time. I only skip a few songs.

This one shocked the hell out of me when it dropped. I was NOT expecting to enjoy a Rick Ross record but this one really hit hard with me. It's short so it controls itself from becoming a bloated mess, the production is super nice and Ross knows what his lane is as an emcee and he stays in it. If you're looking for rappity rap look elsewhere, but Rick Ross most likely raps on better beats than your favorite rapper does these days.

Hell of an intro, great Jay and Kanye features, and I actually really like the single with Ne-Yo. Aston Martin Music is real good but they really should have put the extended version with Drake's verse on here. It's amazing he put two songs that are the exact same thing not only on the same album but back-to-back (MC Hammer, BMF). I'd cut MC Hammer, but other than that, No. 1 and All The Money In The World are the only songs I'd prob skip.

Honestly, I'm not really familiar with how the commercial version of the album sounds all together. Pretty since it's dropped, the version I listen to on my iPod is a mix of the unreleased versions of songs and other tracks that didn't make the final cut. I'm still not sure who Mos Def ended up being excised from the album.

But I will say that I still thoroughly enjoyed the cobbled together version that I put together about a decade ago.

Actually, this may be my second favorite TM-affiliated project (after Brooklynati). Really dope concept album with sharp rhymes and beats. And yeah, it has a pretty damn early Rapsody appearance.
