Just want to open up the conversation.
Recently when I was discussing the “Mount Rushmore” type of producers, I struggled with Madlib because I wasn’t sure he had the classic albums output of the others.
And I’m asking to see what I’m missing because I do love his work.
Madvillainy is a lock obviously.
And I’m sure some would put in Piñata or even Bandana.
Are there other full lengths that he has to his name that can compete with the legends?
And when I say legends...I’m talking Pete, Preemo, Dre, RZA etc.
I guess some could say Dilla doesn’t either. Fantastic, Like Water, Donuts. What else?
Just opening up discussion to get more knowledge of Madlib’s work...not mad or disagreeing in him being named the best doing it.
I’ll add that Killin’ It but the Liks and Xzibit is one of my all-time favorite songs.

I'd argue Madvillainy is his only. I love Pinata and Bandana but I'm not sure we can put them on that level. At least not yet.

Lol...again, not knocking him but what you listed are for the most part cool but far from all-time classics like the producers I mentioned have to their names.
And let me add that anything he raps on by no means can be classic.

When I thought about how to respond to your initial reply my response was going to be something along the lines of his lack of classic albums come down more to the emcees he works with rather than the quality of his production. My favorite Madlib projects are the ones where he's working with rappers I enjoy (Madvillainy, the Gibbs collabs, Liberation). I have no time for squeaky voice (or normal voice) Madlib rapping. If that's your thing, more power to you, but it's just not for me.
All that said, should he be knocked down when compared to other all time greats because he didn't have guys like GZA, Ghost, Rae, Guru, Jeru, etc rapping over his fully produced albums? Do we expect the producer to be able to elevate below average and average rappers to be listenable/enjoyable? Or should we strictly be basing our opinions on just the beats?

...maybe, but he lacks quality control. When he was releasing all those projects, like 5 in a year, there was a great deal that should have been left on the cutting floor truth be told. Brother is still a great, just sayin...

I mean yeah, he had all that gear in those pics from that Behind The Beat book.
But that was like 17-18 years ago! Back when he lived in Wolf’s bomb shelter.
A little after that he’d been making most of his stuff with just a 303, portable turntable, and a cassette deck (seen on that during that Brazil trip)—which would produce most (or all?) of Madvilliany.
An iPad can do pretty much everything all that gear at Wolf’s house can do. Probably more. There are SO MANY apps for recording, chopping, sampling, composing, synths, midi stuff, shit even mixing and mastering. It’s a computer!!!

The processing power is there and software developers have stepped up with some really solid DAWs and effects units and processors. You can literally do pretty much every step you need to do. ITS A COMPUTER.
that being said, everybody aint Madlib, and working with the iPad is kind of a pain in the ass if you don't already have hours producing in the books or you dedicate yourself to learning a workflow for the platform.
The types of beats he makes work really well on the iPad. There's no shortage of samplers.

Haha, yup! That’s the difference right there.

For sure. I went from MPC to PT to Logic and then to iOS GB so those migrations weren’t huge leaps. But going from hardware to an iPhone/iPad??? Yeah that would be frustrating.
