He was patiently waiting for grown man rap to become accepted in the mainstream.

Now that it is and he's reached middle age, he's making his move.

Maybe in his reality it's 2010 and so he thinks people are still hyped to hear him. j/k

But even if this album is fire, it's about 10 years too late. He should have kept from dropping an album just for the mystique.

I will feel like a spouse who's been cheated on repeatedly who goes back. Everytime thinking things will end up like they were meant to be.

Dude has put out a lot of songs I like. If he puts out an album that matches the quality of his output so far, I’m buying it. It’s that simple. CD for the whip if available, highest quality download format if no physical release is available.

Peace,

I actually believe it this time.
Hopefully the done in 40 days and 40 nights thing is either a marketing ploy
or he’s been crafting ideas, gathering beats, doing demos for a long while
and recorded it all in 40 days and 40 nights and it’s not all new material made within that time frame.

Not saying he couldn’t come up with great stuff in 40 days but I don’t want this to
Be a rushed album. We’ve waited this long, I was Just and Guru to have sat with him and exec produced a fuxking classic. The album everyone has always wanted from him.
We’ve waited this long, I want it to deliver in every aspect.
I want NOLA to win! I want this album to be a classic debut talked about like gkmc is talked about when it comes to modern day debut albums.

If that’s the title he’s going with, I still hope he’s using audio clips.
I always loved The Prestige angle he was using.
The Pledge, The Turn, The Prestige. The magic angle, the Tesla angle, all that shit worked for him.

Just tweeted “are you watching closely” maybe we still get some of that.
I’m really hoping for an incredible debut album.

17. "album now featuring Hov (in costarring role)???"
In response to Reply # 0

Ala Ghostface on Only Built...
Word is Jay doesn’t have just a feature but multiple songs with Hov.
If Hov is involved, that means Guru is involved.
If Jay Elect is involved, that means Just is PROBABLY involved.

Both have said it’s coming, I trust both of them.
They also know world wants to hear a Jay Elect solo album...
so if Hov is involved in some sort of costarring role...
I believe we can trust them to still deliver us a Jay Elect solo album
and this won’t be overshadowed by Hov / won’t be looked at a COLLAB album ala Watch the Throne.

I have confidence that there will be some sort of conceptual theme or narrative that allows Hov to be featured some what prominently and still be a Jay Elect solo LP.

We don’t knock Raekwon for having Ghost costar on his solo album, we still call it a Rae solo album... right?

jay & jay do not have a fraction of the chemistry Rae & Ghost had on that album.

if dude doesnt come out with a full fledged solo it's forever over for him

Rae debut solo has Ghost on most of the songs, we still consider it a Rae solo.

Jay Electronica and Jay have Shiny Suit Theory and We Made It together.
Both really good songs because Jay Elect pulled out 2 incredible verses from Hov that took him out of his comfort zone.
Maybe Jay Electronica needs a partner to deliver a full LP.
Thundercat wanted to put his album together with Flying Lotus’ LP to make a double LP.
Maybe Hov is inspired by what music Jay Elect has delivered on the LP
and wants to be a part of it...

Who knows...

Rae & Ghost have more chemistry together than some hip hop duos that started out as duos which we all know they did not.

Jay’Z’s presence all over this is disappointing and takes away from the experience I was hoping for. Just wanted Jay Elec alone, especially considering its so short.

First Listen thoughts:
Second half of The Blinding is dope.
Universal Soldier is real solid. Jay is annoying on it.
Neverending Story is snoozeville. I really dislike the slow ass drumless tracks.
Flux Capacitor beat, wooooooo! Jay is good on this. Chorus vocals sound goofy. Jay Elec not quite riding the beat proper. Elec is weak on this.
Fruits of the Spirit ain’t got drums but it’s more of what I was hoping for. Short as hell though.
Ezekiel’s Wheel. Goddamn man, Jay-Z stilted stuff gets under my skin. Will be a grower because I like the subtle stuff going on in the background but will need to be in the right mood.
APITDA- ugh, too much Jigga. Im out when I hear him, but pulled back in when Elec gets on. It’s not impressive lyrically but he just has a commanding voice and approach.
Nice vibe on this one. But then it’s over.

Really too much Hov for me. Didn’t need it. Sounds like Jay wanted to put out music but not a full length so he woke Jay Elec up from stasis and got some joints together. These can’t be songs Elec had already had built up waiting to be released.

I actually really like it on first listen.

Elect still has it.
Both Jays have a conversational way of spitting and a pen that complements eachother. Still no Rae & Ghost, but def more chemistry than I expected.

Hov almost sounds liberated. He thrives here in a co-pilot role.

Hearing this, you can't help but wonder about the 09 album tho. So much time wasted. I guess every destiny has it's own path, but that project would have really made an impact at the time. Also Just Blaze put his heart and soul in 2 highly anticipated albums that basically never came out (Saigon)? That mustve been devastating.

Based off first listen.

- no just blaze
- jay electron doesn’t even carry his own album, seems more like he didn’t know how to finish his album and deal with the hype, and got a great boost from Sean
- for 10 songs, way too many slow meandering drumless tracks
- shiny suit theory, we already got that years ago, with such as short track list you can’t be putting old ass songs in there c’mon

Like dude bought his own studio.....then instantly stopped making music for the most part.

I'm sure having a child plays a big part in that and I won't disrespect that....but dude really only shows up for 1 or 2 songs per year for the last decade, that's crazy to me.

Does no one hit Just up?
Is his price too high?
Does Just Just turn down everything?
Is there just a billion songs chilling on a hard drive doing nothing?

....that said, Just's batting average is crazy high. The few songs he's done have been the standout on whatever project it's on.

I get quality over quantity....but come on.

we were just using the mats at the yoga studio, but feeling like, hey this seems like something we're into now, we're staying on it, feeling good - lets buy our own mats.

literally never did yoga again

...and Hov locked him in for a week and got it done.

That said it sounds great for an album that sounds like it was done in a week lol. Plus it's dope to hear Jay & Jay over Alchemist & Arrabmusik....2 producers that I didn't think I'd ever hear Hov over.

Only gripe I got so far is I would've loved a couple more songs....since there's only really 7 joints.

Everything really just speeds by.

Kinda hope that one of the two drop another record this year...I doubt there's gonna be some huge tour or anything behind it.

probably a hard pill for some of you to swallow, but Electronica gets bodied on almost all of this. Meanwhile, we find Jay-Z as focused and colorful as he was on 4:44 - such a thrill to hear him like this ("Flux Capacitor" for example)

These are two rappers in different classes. Like Lebron looking at JR Smith for clutch plays. Not the same type creatures.

i havent been waiting for the album to drop so i guess my expectations werent as high as others. definitely understand people not being happy that is a collab album but was being promoted as his solo album. i guess its a jay elec album like the chronic is a dre album?

i like it though. 5/5 on first listen. not sure it would be a fav of all time album for me but i have no complaints.

this album is like his career in reverse. lol

he started bubbling over ten years with dope songs and concepts. had a 'whateva' period while hanging out with celebs that gentrified his space and released pretty much nothing. finished (so far) with a head scratch of an album.
all in all not bad at all but kinda whatever, too.
and yes, it may not be fair, but expectations do play a role...
can't be mad at the drumless joints if you paid attention to dude. act 1 anyone?
his 'NOI Killah Priest' vibe over that khruangbin song pretty much replicates his strongest efforts. shit that gives you a certain mystic/esoteric vibe with some sharp and introspective bars.

i really like jay elec as a rapper and wish he would release more...

I mean, I guess the secret to enjoying it is I stopped waiting for this about like a decade ago, so receiving it now is like a surprise out of nowwhere as oppose to having to meet 13 year expectations.

This album has the first Jay-Z lyrics that actually touched me emotionally. I definitely got numbers in my phone that will never ring again...

This record is the logical extension of Act One to me.

Not sure what everyone was expecting, but this is the cerebral music I was waiting for from Jay Elec. He is remarkably consistent with his sonic choices too. If you were a Day One fan, can't see how this would do anything other than check all the boxes for you...

Salute to Jay-Z for meshing perfectly with the vibe throughout too...

The last song is classic heartfelt rap.

Can't wait to give this more spins and soak it in.

This was a head scratcher at first, but I think I'm falling in love with this. It was strange to have his debut feature Jay Z so heavily but I'm all for it now. There has always been something a little out there about Jay Electronic so the whole vibe and structure is right up his alley.

I personally could never really get my hopes up because I’d heard so little. I enjoyed the jokes, but he wasn’t someone I was waiting on and it made no difference to me if he put out music or not. That said, I know he’s got talent and I’m intrigued now that he actually dropped and I’m bored as hell with this social distancing thing so....copped.

Definitely will give more listens and absorb it more, but on first listen the bars are sharp and I like the production.

Fruits of The Spirit and Ezekiel’s Wheel are my early favorites. What a 1-2 punch at the end of the album. A.P.I.D.T.A is a poignant album closer. And as a “Main Ingredient is the best album of all time” guy I really enjoyed Shiny Suit Theory.

But then I put on that Blu and Damu album (Ground and Water) right after, and I was like, wow, this is SO MUCH BETTER.

Don't get me wrong, the JAY E-Z album is nice, but it's not a repeat banger for me.

I feel like I’ve been on house arrest for like a year(when ultimately I’ve just been home 99% of the time since Thursday), and have played music almost constantly. I’m going for that Jadakiss more than this. I’ve finally given Rapsody-Eve a real shot and have been playing that a ton. I’m even listening to an old album like L.E.G.A.C.Y. - Project Mayhem a lot....even though it’s new and I like it - this Jay isn’t one I find myself reaching for a lot - but that’s ok. It’s just not that type of album where you reach for it all the time. It’s still a strong piece of work IMO.

this album could've been great but dude's lack of focus seems to always be his downfall. I tried to tell y'all ten years ago this would happen, but I sure as hell didn't see the "Jay-Z feat. Jay Electronica" thing happening.

JE's always been a bit here or there for me so no overwhelming anticipation to let down... maybe that's best? It's not a masterpiece but it's pretty solid from start to finish and JE has some really great moments.

Jay-Z is on point throughout the whole thing (even better than his last album, which got too much praise but was definitely his best work in a long time) -- he might come off looking better here but it feels like a genuine collaborative effort, which is refreshing. And it's cool to hear him over a different production style than we'd normally get - I'd take a whole Jay-Z solo record along these lines with the mix a bit cleaned up.

I could live w/out the NoI emphasis but that's more personal than anything - harder and harder to rationalize/tolerate "chosen people" rhetoric as I grow older regardless of the source. But that's definitely where a lot of JE's more inspired wordplay comes from so I'll take it, lol.

You are retarded if you support the viewpoints:

- Jay Elect got “bodied” on this album
- Complaining about drum less tracks knowing that he has tracks like that in times past.
- Complaining about Jay-Z being on the entire album (y’all should’ve just put several albums together of his old music)
- Thinking that he owed y’all more than 10 songs

No matter what he would’ve done you average minded listeners would find something to complain about. It’s somewhat understandable that folks would act like this seeing that there has never been an artist with this much mystique, hype, and aura ever in hip hop. Especially since it’s been 13 years when he first released Act 1. He gave you guys actually what any listener of music wants, a heartfelt and solid project that comes from the soul. Too bad some listeners don’t have one.

This has been hip bopper's PSA to remind you that they do, in fact, think they're a better listener than you. And if you're wondering just how average-minded a listener hip bopper thinks you are...

I can understand you now that you are addressing me directly.

I don’t blindly do anything. When I hear good positive music there’s no denying it. Maybe you should take yours off so that you can stop being deaf, dumb, and blind.

No I haven’t... I never got a chance because of all of the other music that I have been listening to between then and now. There was no way that I would let this album pass me by though. The only other rap record I’ll check out soon is that Shabazz Palaces when it drops next month. Outside of that I won’t be checking out too much on the rap side of things.

This isn’t the 22 tracks, 85 minute album era.

I guess my point and feeling is, there’s an awful lot of quality rap music being made. This Jay Electronica album is good IMO, but it’s not the best album in years or anything.

I will check them out... just going to enjoy this Elect until Shabazz drops.

I think the album is excellent. It’s spiritual music with a lot of self-reflection, and very little profanity. This is something that I can play around young children.

In response to Reply # 0

Fortunate for him, he has built such a mystique that there are fans that will love anything he does.

But honestly, every single thing about this album is trash.

Let’s start with what the expectations for this album are. Jay Elec was praised as the next Nas...or whatever you want to call it. Exhibit C had him prepped to be one of the greats period. Crazy production, unique rhyme cadence, fresh phrasing, uncut hip-hop shit. That was what, over a decade ago? It would be one thing if he completely vanished but he kept popping up with legends, talks about various deals, entire album rumored to be laced by Just Blaze...and so on and so on.

So now here we are with him not being an afterthought but still an extremely hyped artist with co-signs from the greats.

And this, THIS, is the debut album he gives us?

Even if it is decent, you can’t let this mafucka slide with this...this?

10 verses?

Jay-Z on all but one track?

Lazy ass elementary production, half with no drums?

At least two with insanely identifiable samples?

Under 40 minutes?

Absolutely 0 energy or range of emotion or topics from track to track?

Did I mention Jay was on every song?

Did I mention Jay showed him up on every song and even Jay was basic and lazy as fuck with his new found “look at me I finally read a book at age 50” fake ass deep shit.

This shit is utter trash and y’all should be ashamed for even thinking to half respect this shit.

It’s like Lebron skipped college but instead of going to the league, just hung out with all-stars, played a couple pick up games at Team USA tryouts, then at age 30 decided to sign with the a team only to get bounced in the first round of the playoffs while averaging 15 points a game.

Fuck out of here with this bullshit.

The Act II tracklist for 2012 that he teased would've have suited him way better than this.

https://i0.wp.com/true-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Jay-Electronica-Act-2-Patents-Of-Nobility-Tracklist.jpg

The eight songs that have been released/leaked from this shit (Patents Of Nobility, @FatBellyBella, Shiny Shuit Theory, Memories & Merlot, Better In Tune..., Letter To Falon, Road To Perdition, Run & Hide) plus Neverending Story & Ghost Of Soulja Slim would've been a great project.

I wanna hear whatever he was working on with Just Blaze (Exhibit A, Exhibit C, Dear Moleskine, etc.)

idk man...i'm disappointed. the writing is not my biggest grip, there were some fantastic verses on here, but the production (especially Elect's) was meh as hell

Just put together your own Jay Elec album out of the scores of loosies he has dropped over the past 15 years or so.

Try, less than a score. Maybe 10 and of those half, the song is an intro there's a dope verse somewhere and somehow the outro is a full 40 seconds long.

This is coming from someone who loves the album btw. His musical output over the last 10 years is part of the reason I think this is the perfect debut album. The album continues his history of mercurial behavior.

Thirty equals three scores. There are a handful of duplicates in the list below. Add in the loosies he released from 2010-2020 and you have even more. The honorable thing to do would be to apologize for randomly questioning my word, but I don’t expect to encounter much in the way of honor on a message board.

This is turning into another album discussion thread (see: Royce - The Allegory) where some people say they aren't feeling it, Anonymous even gives a pretty detailed response covering what he doesn't like about it, and the thread explodes with bickering by people who like it but just can't accept that not everyone has the same tastes, and rather than actually discuss the music and say what they like about it, set up their soap box and call other people wrong.

I'd venture to guess some were giving their "thoughts" before even listening to the damn album.

He named me as the one discussing the album.

I’m simple, I discuss with those I respect and at times (waaaaaaay less than I used to) I go back and forth with idiots like Orbit to kill some time.

I respond to posters the way they post.

I really haven’t even been on okayplayer for a while though:

But whenever you want to discuss this album...go ahead

Because it seems you just engaged in what you were accusing me of.

I think the internet has proven over the past few years that discussion kinda doesn't matter. Especially with something as subjective as music. If I like something or don't no one else's opinion really matters. No matter how many angry paragraphs a person writes it won't increase my enjoyment and vis versa. Me, I love this album, but I'm not sure how going into how I felt Jay Electronica brought Jay Z into his world (almost changed him into another super spiritual rhyme clone) is the most Jay Electronica thing he could possibly do means anything to anyone anymore.

The logic that people feel is inherent to their tastes is an illusion. We all just like what we like, and don't like what we don't like. We can explain why, but at the end of the day my logic may not make sense to someone else. Does that make me wrong for liking it, no. Does it mean I can't communicate why I like it very well, maybe, but even if I communicated it perfectly it doesn't mean that other people not have to agree.

I guess I'm just saying what is the point of all this. Why are we even here right now?

I've said something similar here before; that I think we are sort of (whether by nature or nurture, or both) kind of predisposed to being attracted to certain types of music. And so to your point, anyone else's opposite opinion of a piece of music one way or the other isn't necessarily going to lead to you reconsidering your feelings about that particular album/song/artist/whatever.

BUT I do think nuanced discussion can lead to *slight* changes in how you feel about a piece of art, if someone presents a perspective that you may not have picked up on or considered when you were listening. For example, what you said below re: JayE bringing JayZ into his world makes me want to listen again to see if I can identify that same vibe and if so, make me appreciate the album more.

So if nothing else, a nuanced take on a piece of art can lead to a revisitation of said art with a "different" set of eyes. Something may click, it may not. But it's worth discussing IMO. Otherwise like you said, why the hell are we here !

But all that said, ultimately you enjoy it or you don't. And so even if I pick up on that perspective you mentioned, I may still not *enjoy* the album all that much and therefore it's whatever. BUT, upon repeat listens to explore your perspective for myself, I may find that it sounds WAY better on 2nd and 3rd and 4th listen than it did on the first, therefore making your contributions worthwhile and meaningful.

It seems we cant all just agree to disagree without being disagreeable.

That said, I'm feeling The Blinding as a highlight more that some it seems. I thought he had a level of energy and truth that felt like vintage JayE.
Lines like "tell it to my bank account or say it to the dice" explained his whole saga to me. I understood why it took 13yrs, Dude is dope but undisciplined.

I'm glad it came out and like a lot of it. My disappointment is mostly around my feeling that JayZ had to drag him into the booth to get this completed, like he had more passion and things to say at times.

The inclusion of Shiny Suit Theory felt like a low point. I like that cut generally but why retread when its one of only 9 tracks with actual verses and you have other good to great released tracks. If you and Jay wanted another track together get in the damn booth!

I do think JayZ more than held up his end. There was more than a bit of that old "young Jay" "You know who the f___ I am? Don't disrespect me" that I personally enjoy. Jay will always be able to fall back on being dope at boasting because he continues to win at life in ways so few rappers actually are.

All in all, can recommend his one, especially for fans of either.

respect,

Thankfully this board is better than most social media spaces so we do generally have more in-depth and nuanced conversations.

That being said, most of us are in our thirties and forties. We ought to be able to talk about music and not get personal.

I've been thinking a lot about this predictability lately, as you put it. My internet access is patchy right now but will come back for deeper dive, but suffice to say that the stalemate is real, for both those who like artist/album/song X and those that dislike X... and while I don't think it's a *new* issue and has deeper roots in how we relate to art and each other more generally, I do think there are some peculiarities with our current cultural moment that exacerbate our worst/shallowest tendencies when we try to talk about music (and art more generally).

There are no easy solutions but there are a few key acknowledgments that can help:

1) Recognize that my viewpoint does not automatically preclude the possibility of other viewpoints. This does not change just because something really, really, really moves me to love or hate. I can love something, and someone else can hate it, and neither perspective is inherently a reflection of the quality of the listener and their taste.

2) Recognize that although discussion re: music varies in purpose and quality, my goal should not be persuasive or competitive in nature but rather a sharing of experience and viewpoints. I benefit from learning why you like X and vice versa. I benefit, too, from hearing how you approach music more generally, whether that involves technical musical detail, emotional resonance, or personal stories. The goal, if we can reduce discussion to one goal, should be an augmentation of appreciation and understanding. Argumentation, when held in the right spirit, can help achieve that goal -- but it can also quickly narrow and shrink the possibilities of a conversation to their shallowest point.

3) There is no right way to approach music -- but there is a technical language involving music that, as with any domain of skill and knowledge, can help us build a particular type of understanding of music as music (so far as that may be a possibility). We should not be fooled into thinking that music theory or related ways of analyzing music are objective; they are not. They do, however, provide a means for talking about music using a shared language close to the subject itself - a language, in other words, that is not objective but not wholly subjective, either, and thus has a type of usefulness that the absolutely subjective may not. (I am speaking here of objectivity and subjectivity in relative terms - neither is ever purely one or the other.)

4) Following #3, the more we can talk about music with an eye toward the music, the better foundation we build for conversations that are actually productive - for we at least share a set of terms that we can use to understand each other and the music itself. But because "music itself" is a non-existent thing - because the artist, culture, context is inseparable from the music - our understanding of what it means to talk about music as music must necessarily be capacious. If we negotiate these contradictions with generosity and imagination, what it means to talk about music as music will likely be something entirely different from what we expect or assume it should be... and it will be all the more enriching as a result.

Have to go - but I have at least one more mini-sermon on humility to include here --- so will return!

Wow. Great points all around. I don't get mad about other people's opinions. But I had stopped caring about them and have started to feel a reluctance to even share my own recently. You have made me think of things a bit differently. There is possibly value in understanding why people like or don't like music even though it doesn't change how I feel about it, that's not the point.

The people that dislike it don't dislike it because of what it is. They dislike it because it is not what they wanted. That is ALL THEIR CRITICISM. So they aren't even truly listening.

"just blaze laced him" in 2020. Just Blaze hasn't laced shit in 10+ years.

Folks have confused your rants as detailed discussion.

When an artist doesn't do exactly what you think they should, you go full prick.

And you don't evolve as a listener. Or even keep an open mind.

Regardless, YOU are the one going at folks in here for liking something. Its...weird.

Just go bump your old custom made OC playlist from 99 or some shit.

Hated it.

I still like "Shiny Suit Theory", although it's obvious Hov and Jay did not record in the same room when they did that joint. Hov still sounds muddy as all hell. You'd think maybe they would try to give that joint a new mix for this album but NOPE.

The only new joint on the album I liked was the outro. Jay E's last verse about his mother was very potent and exposed how little thought he put into a lot of the other verses on this album. I hate to say it, but Jay Elec would have probably been better served never dropping this and living off the mythos that he is the greatest emcee to never drop a proper album. Instead, now, he's just a guy amongst many other meat-and-potatoes rappers.

There are some joints on here that at least musically evoke the feeling those Jay Elec joints from 2007-2011 were going for: "The Neverending Story" and "Fruit of the Spirit" but I felt the bars just weren't hitting for me on the level of some of those older joints.

Some stuff on here, like "Flux Capacitor", "Ezekiel’s Wheel" and "Universal Soldier" are just bad to me. Can't get down with those at all from the beats to the rhymes.

So, yeah. Pretty let down by all of this. And Jay-Z cosplaying as NOI does absolutely nothing for me. Glad that at least some of you guys enjoy this thing but after sitting with it for a while I just can't help but feel like this was a missed opportunity.

Imagine waiting a decade to drop an album...enlisting who is generally seen as the GOAT to co-pilot, putting out an album only to have the shit talked about for a week.

While the world was at home during a pandemic with nothing else to do but listen to music!

Album is straight ass...just like his musical career.

And isn’t that more of a failure of The Lesson than the album? There are plenty of things to discuss on the album that won’t get discussed here: the place of album in the long lineage of Islam’s influence on hiphop, for one.

Lyrically, Jay Elec and Jigga kill it. Lyrics, flows, concepts. The Neverending Story and The Blinding are both flames. Ghost of Soulja Slim is a heater as well. And the Jay Elec heavy final stretch bangs, especially "Fruits of the Spirit" and "A.P.I.D.T.A."

Only thing I could possibly find objectionable it are maybe a couple beats in the middle portion. But even on those tracks, the lyrics are dope. Otherwise, shit is thoroughly enjoyable. Still playing it consistently. Don't know what to tell y'all.

folks need to stop making fantasy albums in their head then getting upset when they don't happen exactly as they imagined

These dudes are rapping their asses off. Ezekiels Wheel alone is worth it.

Is it Illmatic or ATLIENS? No. But I didn't expect it to be.

...and adding nothing to the conversation. I still listen to the album, but I have much bigger things on my mind right now also. Sometimes music helps with things like that and I listen more, bit sometimes It doesn't.

In hard times (Thousands of people dying every day counts I think) I tend to listen to less hip hop in general. This album in particular has a neutral effect on my mood right now.

Bottom tier?

Mid tier?

Top tier?

1. Is this really a debut? This album is half Jay-Z. (And yes, of course if you are going to label this as not a debut you have to question how you label OB4CL and Ironman)
2. The anticipation for this album has been building up for a decade, as opposed to most solo debuts that either don't have anticipation because it's a new artist that came out of nowhere or maybe has a year or two of hype after some mixtapes or impactful guest spots. Because of this the expectations might have been too high.

The album is fine, it's prob a solid 6/10 for me. It's not bad in any sense, but this pails in comparison to the tracks from Act 2 that have leaked over the last 10 years (Patents of Nobility, @Fatbellybella, Letter to Falon, Road to Perdition). Shit, I'd argue that one of the better tracks on here is a leak from Act II that dropped 10 years ago (Shiny Suit Theory).

To me it's bottom tier as far as debut albums go when considering the hype for it.

But again, is this really a (solo) debut?

You're correct... it's not a solo album, even if it's billed as one.

I also agree it doesn't stack up to Elec's own material that he's released previously. "Exhibit C" has more energy to it than anything here.

Usually, a debut album from a hyped artist is the chance to see the skills of the artists but also project the course of their career.

Like GKMC (if you want to call it and not Section. 80 his debut) gave listeners a sense of Kendrick's skill but also gave us a sense of his potential.

With Jay Elec's album, we don't get any of the anticipation and mystery that we got from Snoop or Nas or Kendrick or Drake.

It took so long for his release that we already know the course of his career and that he likely isn't going to grow much. (and that we likely won't get another album from him)

And on top of that, the performance by Jay Elec wasn't memorable.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the album and was happy to hear his new material. But I dropped *any and all* expectations for music that lived up to his initial hype. That more than anything kept me from disliking this project.
