i REALLY like Crime and Sharpest edges - the other two i agree completely, they just seem like meh R&B
in terms of what was on the scrapped album - agree very curious. What got released from those sessions seems to be...
Gentleman Doesn't Matter Haha No One Can Hear You! toogoodtobetrue
and i dig all of those a good bit (i just made them a little 5 song EP in my itunes along w the Sebastian song he did - Run For Me) but ya Ology is a really really high bar to clear

It's hard to be more disappointed than I'd already set myself up to be. I really dislike how much he "dumbed it down." Went from really beautiful, abstract lyrics to... couldn't be more plain lyrics. There are some gems on here. Paper Tulips, Hips, and Celine are the standouts. Celine particularly is great. And the intro should really have been a full song. But Hurt? Bruh. That song is flat out bad. And most of this is really, like the singles, middle of the road. Gallant's singing, his falsetto in particular provides bright spots to a lot of bland songs.

pretty disappointing i wonder if he just was too much in his own head, given the public troubles he had making/finishing this record I mean, i still dig it overall - its a decent record. but its not cracking my top 10 AOTY, which i was hoping it would - i expected a lot out of him here.

He said that album took a heavy mental/emotional toll on him. Which makes sense, as it was supposedly a study of self. But this to me feels like someone told him (or he got it in his head) that while he built a small but strong fanbase off Ology, he could really blow up if he just simplified his lyrics and made music that was easier for people to understand. So that's what he did and we ended up with songs like Hurt and Sleep On It. He's capable of so much better.
Also, I selfishly kinda hope he breaks up with his girl because I think he'd make a GOAT break-up album.
