"Skyzoo Appreciation"

The Salvation
A Dream Deferred
Barrel Brothers w/ Torae
Music For My Friends
The Easy Truth
In Celebration of Us
Retropolitan w/ Pete Rock

Cloud 9
Live from the Tape Deck w/ Illmind
Ode to Reasonable Doubt

How many MCs are fucking with that output?

Granted his style is one-dimensional...most artists do have their niche and it’s better to stick to what you do well then fail trying to cover unfamiliar ground.

What’s your favorite album? Song?

What would like to see from him next?

He's not "one-dimensional" at all. He talks about
all kinds of shit, he's topically one of the more
diverse rappers out there.

He writes rhymes and attacks beats the same exact way regardless of the mood or tempo.

Doing so can put an MC in position to wear thin on the listener.

The reason I said that is because that’s one of his flaws. Myself and others who admittedly love his music stopped listening and checking stuff out for a while because it started sound monotonous.

All of his hooks have damn near the same phrasing.

With that said, he has his own style and it’s dope. His track record rivals some of our favorite legends imo.

Someone like Kendrick seems to study the music and attack each track differently from both content and delivery.

Someone like Nas comes differently with the content many times as well as switching his rhymes schemes. Although, Nas is an interesting example because this doesn’t always work to his favor.

Andre 3000 and Big Boi both seemed to strive to coming different every single time. Andre has various rhymes patterns on almost every joint while Big Boi always seems to match his flow and energy to the music.

I could go on but those are three different examples. There are many artists in Skyzoo’s lane and it probably is the norm for people to stick to their lane but I just feel his music comes off a bit more repetitive than most I listen to. Black Thought and AZ are two of my favorites and I would put them in the Skyzoo lane in this department.

I think the thing that gets me most is how he goes about the hook because he tends to use the same pattern on a lot of his songs.

But again...it works for him and I love a lot of his music so I’m not complaint, just nitpicking in attempts to shut down anyone bringing that up.

>Someone like Kendrick seems to study the music and attack
>each track differently from both content and delivery.

Not really. His BEATS are varied. But the best and most
famous Kendrick songs are just good old Kendrick. Sometimes
he raps a little *faster* or *slower* but that does not
= true variance.

>Someone like Nas comes differently with the content many times
>as well as switching his rhymes schemes. Although, Nas is an
>interesting example because this doesn’t always work to his
>favor.

Yeah, the opposite is true: experimental Nas is the worst
Nas.

Nas' excellence is in being Nas -- the most descriptive and
artful wordsmith we've ever seen.

>Andre 3000 and Big Boi both seemed to strive to coming
>different every single time. Andre has various rhymes patterns
>on almost every joint while Big Boi always seems to match his
>flow and energy to the music.

Andre has been a guest verse rapper for 15 years now. He
has no breadth of content to be judged on; Skyzoo has already
lapped Andre in terms of raw output. So the reason that
Skyzoo sounds more "repetitive" is that we've heard way, way
more Skzyoo albums on which to judge him on. Andre just pops
up now and then.

And relatedly: that Andre and Big Boi are a group is part of
the point: they share songs and albums. They don't SOUND
repetitive because we don't hear them for any long stretch
of time.

So that isn't making sense to me.

>I could go on but those are three different examples. There

Yeah, I don't really understand your point.

Thought catches beats and rides them differently imo.

This recent Thought is different than 'You Got Me'
thought.

AZ has multiple flows and styles too.

So I'm definitely not sure what you're talking about.

Cool, I just don't think that is true.

Shrugs...

As always you’re cherry-picking your points.

“Good old Kendrick” is the epitome of a statement that means nothing.

So Kendrick took the same approach from These Walls to U to Alright?

Those are 3 songs in a row on one album that he approached completely different from content to mood to delivery to rhyme schemes. If you don’t understand that then I’m not sure why we are are even discussing this.

I said exactly that experimental Nas is the worst by saying it doesn’t work to his favor so I find it funny that you tried to use that point.

And LOFL at trying to downplay Andre because he has been semi-retired. That doesn’t void his career of approaching every song and topic from a different place.

It’s cool if you don’t get it but it’s borderline hilarious that you’re trying to act like I’m not making factual points.

Have a nice day...I’m done with this pointless conversation.

SONICALLY it sounds different, but same Kendrick to me,
which is fire

I mean, Sky sounds different on different projects too

Cool, so you were wrong to bring up Nas

You could have just said so earlier

>And LOFL at trying to downplay Andre because he has been
>semi-retired. That doesn’t void his career of approaching

(1) Andre is one of the best to ever touch a mic and (2)
barely has enough solo content over the last 15 years for
an EP, let alone an album. Skyzoo has almost 4 album sized
projects in the last 3-4 years Lol. What that means,
mathematically, is that there is more Skyzoo music to
*sound* repetitive.

A cure for being repetitive is to never make too much music.
It's worked beautifully for Andre and many others. We're always
hungry to hear him. But you can't use Andre to make this point.

But guys who crank out music always run that risk. It ain't
a problem to me tho

He does approach tracks differently which I appreciate but he definitely falls flat on his face a few times. But, he also succeeds many times.

i don't know why you have to turn this whole shit upside down and be so willfully obtuse about it - it aint complicated. At all.
Skyzoo has 1 flow and 1 delivery style. Some rappers have more. Some don't. That's really it.

He brought up one style as a FLAW, when Nas is one of
the best rappers ever specifically because he does that
one flow well, wraps it around so many different beats.

So it ain't a flaw.

To some rappers, its a strength: the consistency and
excellence over different generations of beats, but
keeping steady and still flowing

Jay and Nas are specifically at their worst when they
switch it up

I accidentally sent OE a direct message which should’ve been the following reply:

Stop replying...
You’re making perfect sense. OE arguing for the sake of arguing.
He understands what you’re saying. If he didn’t, he should stop replying and listen to the music more from the artists being talked about.
But I’m comfortable in saying he’s very familiar with the music.

Peace.

5. Basquiat On the Draw

Bonus 'Rolacks' (not a skyzoo song, but one of my faves because Rolacks is up the street from my childhood home)

I know 'Stop Fooling Yourself' and 'For What It's Worth' cover similar subject matter, but I honestly think that is his best content, Analyzing those dual paths.

but he still just doesn't really grab me. I can't really put my finger on it, but hes somehow a little boring to me. His voice, his flow...something. I want to like him more. I can't think of a single Skyzoo line.

A lot is going on in his lyrics but I do have a hard time deciphering exactly what he is saying.

He is smooth wit it, can spit and def has the ear for beats. And I agree, he takes the same approach and cadence with every album. And it does get monotonous.

I love that he is touring with Elhzi. I wonder how they sound live.

Like, you felt like saying, "this new Statik Selektah is whatever, but look for the Skyzoo feature" and it felt very stupid coming out of your mouth?

I love listening to him rap, but one of his greatest accomplishments has been making people who want to say his name out loud not feel totally stupid about it, and picking a lane that meant the moments in which you'd be saying "Skyzoo" out loud were pretty rare because it would always just be your one weird friend that got over excited every time Griselda dropped art.

To be clear, Sky is probably in my top five since 2009 or so. But his career feels so weirdly both pre and post his moment, always.

Does anyone else feel that the Joint he did with 9th is still his best work? Maybe that was just the last time he was rapping down to my level since he did it so quickly.
