I really do think Smith stole parts of LL's flow and the whole "painting a picture" style of song from TBS tho

Good of place as any to remind people that Will Smith did not have Rakim ghost write Summertime.

....then Fresh Prince gets that beat and spits his absolute best bars of his life, while using Rakim's monotone style which Will wasn't exactly known for???

...on top of all that, Will never again would have another performance on the mic as strong as this track

Something still does not add up.

from this breakfast club interview, its seems like Ra had a beat with the Summer Madness sample, but I didn't interpret it as the exact same beat or song as Summertime.

....but then they turn around and drop the "What's On Your Mind" 12" which is arguably waaaaay softer (although i think it's dope) ..the song features a 3rd Rakim verse entirely about watching the Cosby Show with his new lady friend and ya know... taking things slow......

He had the relationship/Chicago connection with producers Hula and Fingers, and gave an interview where he kind of dance around saying he wrote the song without actually saying it.

My homie (who used to post here) interviewed J.U.I.C.E for Rime magazine back in the early 2000s, and he told him he wrote "Summertime."

i always assumed he produced but i know years ago i had read that rakim actually produced most of their stuff. then he said it again in a recent interview. was eric b legit just a dj?

i wonder if rakim gets into that in the book, i need to listen to it.

Rakim has been making the PR rounds for his new book lately.. He's been saying he did most of the production for Eric B and Rakim. He said so on the Breakfast Club. He did give a shout out to Marley Marl and Paul C.. didn't mention Large Pro to my recollection, though.

that part isn't new. but for this post, apparently there's still some debate about whether he wrote bars for Will Smith.

In response to Reply # 18

production is such a vague concept to me. would the above percentage (from a rakim interview) mean rakim made the full beat for 80% of the songs or more likely he crafted the main concept for most of their songs and eric b had input in most songs as well?

i was trying to listen to his book while at work but i couldnt really pay attention.

i feel like rakim doing 80% of the production is exaggerated. i would think he would have less collaboration with other producers on his solo projects if he really was doing so much of their production.

edit* found this:
https://ambrosiaforheads.com/2016/03/eric-b-defends-his-legacy-claims-his-credit-in-history-audio/

based on the printed excerpts eric b had production ideas but needed others to make them into beats for him at first then at some point did make the beats himself. he himself says that it was a collaboration with rakim. it seems other producers were involved too. not sure this clears up much lol.

the link does mention summertime so yay it connects lol

and quiet as kept, Rakim is a better DJ than Eric B (infinitely more so when it comes to turntablism)

if rakim was more the sample ideas then his solo albums might have more of a cohesive sound.
