"How were 4 versions of "I Feel For You" released in 5 years?"

I generally know that when there was a hard distinction between singer and songwriter and popular songs were covered with much more frequency, However:

Prince released I Feel For You in 1979 (which was a smash hit right?)

I just learned Pointer Sister released a version in 1982

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DquLFna_YY4 (not bad)

Rebbie Jackson released a version in 1984

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYkE8pv_BG0 (garbage by the way)

The same year Chaka Khan released her iconic version

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hX9E44mClKs

So how did that work? I am guessing the Rebbie Jackson and Pointer Sister versions were album cuts and not released as singles?

Did Chaka Kahn hear Rebbie Jackson's and Pointer Sisters version and say, I can do way better than that?

Was it still common in 1984 to release a cover of a song that was popular less that 5 years ago?

That doesn't happen now right? Even DJ Khaled waited 18 years to use the Ms. Jackson beat for SZA. and 10+ years to sample Maria Maria.

BTW, didn't know Patrice Rushen turned down I feel for you. Or that it was Stevie Wonder on Harmonic for Chaka Kahn's version.

I would easily watch an hour long documentary just on this song. So much amazing history is a part of it.

It wasn't released as a single.

That being said, next to I Wanna Be Your Lover, it's my favorite song on the LP.

That's that Lesson Knowledge drop I've come to miss from this place.

I was looking through the list to see if it was mostly white pop artist covering black R&B tunes but it seems to go both ways.

Sometimes I be thinking it be the a song with the same title but not the same song being covered, cause in the 70's & 80's it was a ton of generic titled songs with totally different versions that happen to have the same title; thanks for this list.
