...hope the rest of the LP is dope .

edit: ..meh, skimmed thru it and not feeling any of these songs sonically (nice to hear a Queen Lah verse tho) ...was hoping the LP would be fire on the strength of that "Phylicia" track she dropped earlier this year. oh well.

...plus they secured the rare GZA guest verse, but didn't do him justice with a mailed in reworked beat and blah Rapsody verse. On paper it's a classic, but i cant even make it to the GZA verse because the rest of their token "real hip hop" track is so bad.

Now, i know Rapsody isn't wack at all... "Phylicia" is one of my favorite songs of the year. So wheres the new joints that have this level of quality??

so great to hear an album full of raps in 2019. i really hope this gets the shine it deserves. i have a few favorite albums for the year but i think this one wins over them.

i love these albums and they would each be worthy of AOTY but Eve i think beats them out.

Any other year this is AOTY. I love that she is unashamed to rap. She has bars for days and hella substance.

Side note: I love Afeni, but the idea that black men don't appreciate/protect their(black) women is mildly frustrating to me on a personal level. Kinda makes me fell invisible sometimes. -my bad too personal for OKP.

Nah, your pretty much wrong here, and besides, who cares,
it's a dope song

And even if she was lying, rappers lie about worse things
to no end

Like I said, the song is dope. But if you are asserting the lie that black men don't appreciate black women. I'm not going to respond because that is a conversation filled with expletives that I am not going to have with some rando on the internet.

Rapsody made a harmless song with a harmless sentiment and
you're frustrated.

There are *countless* stats to support the idea that black
women are underappreciated by black men, but it sounds like
those won't sway you because of a personal experience of some
kind.

First, it's low key wild for her to name the joint Eve when it could be argued that that's confusing to the market (isn't Eve planning a new album this year?)

Second, Rapsody featured on Jamila's Legacy Legacy album, then puts out her album using the same concept of naming each song after historical figures, and Rapsody gets feature after feature talking about the concept, and no one mentions it?

Just seems crazy to me, and it's a solid record, but the concept is wholly lifted, and i haven't heard/seen anyone say peep about it...

The first thing I thought of when I heard of this albums concept was that Jamila woods has very recently done the same thing. Whether they came up with the idea independently or not is anybody’s guess.

but, just a thought...hasn’t Rapsody done this before to a much lesser extent? “Crown” had the joint, Tina Turner. Betty Shabazz (possibly my 2nd favorite Rapsody song after Godzilla) was like 2013. Plus, Sojourner dropped last year. I feel like she, at least, already had the idea in mind.

I don’t believe it was a complaint at all, but rather the sort of an observation which is useful on a discussion board.

Maybe someone will check out Legacy Legacy based on it being referenced. I’ve found many gems on this site from such similar conversations.

>First, it's low key wild for her to name the joint Eve when
>it could be argued that that's confusing to the market (isn't
>Eve planning a new album this year?)

I thought about the Eve name confusion issue, but that is the metaphorical “first woman” (literal if you’re follower of the Judeo-Christian tradition). Would have been nice if Eve got a cameo.

>Second, Rapsody featured on Jamila's Legacy Legacy album, then
>puts out her album using the same concept of naming each song
>after historical figures, and Rapsody gets feature after
>feature talking about the concept, and no one mentions it?
>
>Just seems crazy to me, and it's a solid record, but the
>concept is wholly lifted, and i haven't heard/seen anyone say
>peep about it...

Rap flips the concept to make it specific to Black women. Maybe Jamila and Rap talked about it behind the scenes or Rap just saw JW do it and decided to Do a flip on the idea. Hope they both will go on tour together and that people will support both projects.

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)

9th didn't come correct on ibtihaj, but Rapsody did. She had the best verse, and the video was hella dope. The joint with Queen Latifah is FLAMES

have to let the album sink in, sounds promising so far!

To people like US, a record is a piece of history. A moment in time.
Most people don't get it.

Yeah. That was a bit much. That was like a throwback price. Worth it though imo.

Is that the same sample used in Hi - Tek / Common’s The Sun God?

I liked the production on Laila’s Wisdom a lot,
the album as a whole though — not so much.

Clearly Rapsody can rhyme with anyone, she’s fantastic.
Just didn’t really like her I guess on LW.

But I guess due to the content / theme of this album...
The historical black women, the perseverance all of them showed
throughout each’s personal journey...

Is somehow reflected in the rhymes, because this album
has a harder edge to it than LW, a tougher exterior, lived through some shit.
Can hear it in the album imo.

If that makes sense to anyone...

Thank you for pointing that out - I forgot I had that song in my library. Did a comparison and it sounds a bit like it, but I'm not completely sure.

A few days ago I submitted the main vocal/musical sample, Billy Paul's "Ebony Woman", to WhoSampled.com (waiting for it to be approved) but that song doesn't have that instrument (is sounds like a string instrument, but my brain can't think of what one.)

My fav song is def Iman as well, but Reyna's Interlude is equally my fav. Whew!
