"Question About Beat Filtering"

can anyone help me pinpoint who might have been the first to filter out a sample's hi-end and let it ride as a bassline for the rap parts while bringing it back in full for the hooks? I know Dilla did it and the earliest I can think of is Pete Rock but I'm pretty sure I'm missing somebody earlier than him. was just wondering who originated what became a popular technique in the mid-late 90s.

I guess Large might have pioneered it. I'm just wondering if anyone ever heard an interview with say him or Pete where they mentioned who taught/influenced them how to do that particular technique. I don't recall any. maybe someone who didn't even produce hip hop used it and they caught on from that.
