"Verses/lines that COMPLETELY derail the vibe of the rest of the song"

https://youtu.be/u_C4onVrr8U

WTF was with Cole on the last verse of this song?!

The instrumental is a sexy, laid back guitar beat.

Cole's first verse is about trying to get with a chick he had a previous rendezvous with

You got R&B singer Miguel crooning explicitly about wanting to fuck and then in the last verse Cole comes in talking about Kapernick, Police Brutality and President Trump

Way to fuck up the entire mood Cole!

So the chorus of this song goes:

You drinkin', I'm drinkin'
You smokin', I'm smokin'
You freakin', I'm freakin'
You fuckin', we fuckin'
You fucked up, we fucked up
We make it, we take it
You hate me, I hate you
You talk shit, I talk shit

Red and Keith Murray's verses are standard party rap fare about getting girls and shit

So it's incredibly odd Sermon spends the last half of his best talking about being a responsible father to his kids

It sucks cuz it’s basically the best beat on the album and he completely squandered it. Completely.

got love for the game
But ay I'm not in love with all of it
Could do without the fame
And rappers nowadays are comedy
The hootin' and the hollerin'
Back and forth with the arguin'
Where you from, who you know
What you make and what kind of car you in
Seems as though you lost sight
Of what's important when depositin'
Them checks into your bank account
And you up out of poverty
Your values is a disarray, prioritizin' horribly
Unhappy with the riches
'Cause you're piss poor morally
Ignorin' all prior advice and forewarnin'
And we mighty full of ourselves all of a sudden, aren't we?

Then Rihanna Comes in and says

You're gonna be, a shinin' star
In fancy clothes, and fancy cars
And then you'll see, you're gonna go far
'Cause everyone knows, just who ya are
So live your life (Hey! Ay ay ay)
You steady chasin' that paper, just live your life
(Oh! Ay ay ay)
Ain't got no time for no haters, just live your life

Its like they on completely different songs.

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

...when that that beat changed and that first verse drops and the fender rhodes sample comes in (i think its a sample) .. amazing moment right there!!!

This song is well on its way to becoming one of the great "love letter" songs in hip hop.. but then the dream dissolves into a nightmare lol (don't stop it yet!)

Wanted the instrumental for so long to this shit.. finally found it on napster one day and it was worth the wait.

One of my favorite moments from that album. Fatlip's helter skelter flow on that song reminds me a lot of OBD.

But to get back to your point of Fatlip derailing the song, doesn't the first verse start out on an upbeat note, then moves onto the second verse which hints at a bit of disillusionment, and then progresses to the third verse where the 'relationship' is totally dissolved?

...at least for me, by the time it turns to chaos you're not really prepared ..the 2nd verse still feels normal to me even though he's hinting at some shit ..but when he dives into the 3rd verse the whole vibe changes into something sinister quickly and you're already fully committed

..it's like a roller coaster ride thats been pretty smooth ..then it dips into some shit that you weren't prepared for .. now it's too late to get the fuck off !!

Dre's verse is sad and philosophical about a girl who experiences tragedy

Big Boi's verse is about getting some head in the parking lot in exchange for a free poster

KRS just finished ripping the track a new one and topped it off with the little patois, and Tim comes in with 'Baby, Baby, ummm... maybe, mabe, ummm...'

I cut the song off after KRS finishes

It was so amazingly Houston tho so it’s perfect. Tela has to swing in on a rope for the video version. Good times overall. It’s high up on the list of ‘can’t play it around kids’ regardless.

It was soooo much better.

I also remember the original "It's Your World" was a little more stripped down. I came to love the album version but I recall preferring the original for a while. Think it was something w/the drums that Dilla ultimately added to the final version.

In response to Reply # 0

Red & Meth throw off the album experience way more than they throw off the song though...I recognize the L&R is supposed to be a gritty, nasty funk record...but it would have better served the project as a whole to be a bit more subtle.
Also, Ricky's verse on DiaND has its moments, but pretty often, as soon as I hear "Lookin' at my b*tch, I bet she give ya ass a bone", I just snap out of the state that song puts me in and fall back to earth. Not a huge Drake fan, but it shoulda been him on that feature...that topic woulda been his bread n butter.

Joe Scudda on Little Brother's "Lovin' It".

Phonte's verse is happy, the sample is happy and Joe instantly throws the song off. I don't really know why Joe was on LB's first single at all compared to everyone else in the Justice League at the time.

It's not that I dislike Scudda's work....but man he was a bad fit on that song IMO.

Think there was another example or two I can't think of right now but he's since stepped back from that perspective in interviews and such.

I think there was a no-name rapper or rap group who took issue with that line in "Real People" shortly after it was released, and dissed Common over it ... though I can't remember who it was. Think they used the "Real People" beat for the diss too. It was pretty weak haha but they did an interview or two about it and explained why it bothered them so much. Not sure if Comm ever responded.

Comm also had the F-bomb line in "Dooinit" that is super cringeworthy to listen to now. But it doesn't ruin the song cause the song is that good lol.

Not that I have the right to comment on anyone's preferences but I remember hearing Common admit to having some sort of a relationship with a white woman at some point.

He didn't say if it was a hookup or if it happened after he recorded Real People. It makes sense. He's on the road and likely playing the field, at least early in his career. But maybe he felt conflicted about interracial dating in the time period around LWFC/Be.

The Dooinit is textbook record scratch material. I can only listen to the edited version of that song. I probably shouldn't listen to that song at all now, but that song is tough outside of that part.
