Album is really good. Harkens back to boom bap but still sounds fresh. And the kid can spit, though I think he needs to get a little more imaginative with his flows/rhyme schemes.

Top (in order):

DiVE EP - Black Milk
Northside of Linden, Southside of Slauson - Salaam Remi and Terrace Martin
Shea Butter Baby - Ari Lennox

Next, for some moments (in order):

When I Get Home - Solange
K.R.I.T. IZ HERE - Big K.R.I.T (not "feeling" this one as deep as I did the majority of 4eva)
TDT - Big K.R.I.T

Albums that I have but only really love a tiny amount of songs or has songs that I listened to in full once either because I didn't "get it" at first or just got pushed downs because of the other stuff I've had on repeat (in order of favorites and # of songs):

Love Will Find A Way - Philip Bailey (tracks 3, 6, 8)
Thina - Seba Kaapstad (tracks 4, 6)
Ancestral Recall - Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah (tracks 4, 11)
The Loop - Shafiq Husayn (track 15)
Ventura - Anderson .Paak (track 7)

And I only have one song from this album:

Sportee - Nolan the Ninja (track 19)

"She was on that tip about stoppin' the violence

In response to Reply # 33

some im trying to bring down to match how i actually feel and others i know the ranking is too low to how much i really enjoy the album. keep in mind the ratings are in a range of 0.5 so the difference between them isnt that great.

but as a whole my comments are meant to give a little insight on how i think the album will settle after more listens or where im currently with it.

if i just set a filter that gave me the albums i listed but with no rating attached i know i would arrange it in a different order.

Though that’s another EP. “No Women No Kids” though....so good.

LB is hands down my favorite though. I’ve played that so many times. Basically it’s been 75% LB and 25% Skyzoo in the car or at home. And 100% Benny or Conway in the gym.

That’s a great album.

Plugs is hard too, though.

I’ve seen your Von Pea posts - that’s next on my list to get. Waiting until I’m ready for a new album though. I prefer to keep my rotation small.

....it's too bad they both hate touring, so I'll prolly never see it live, but whatever.

After that tho:

Snoh Aalegra - Ugh, Those Feels Again
Jay Som - Ana Ko
Little Brother - May The Lord Watch
DJ Snake - Carte Blanche (I didn't expect to like this one, I orginally only checked it for the Bryson Tiller feature and ended up liking the whole record)
Tuxedo - III
The Black Keys - Let's Rock (I know they aren't popular anymore, but I really think this record was awesome)
Jim Jones - El Capo (the heatmakerz and guests made this album really dope)
Com Truise - Perusaion System
Skyzoo & Pete Rock - Retropolitan
Anderson Paak - Ventura
Lion Babe - Cosmic Wind (this one is so slept on....didn't see anyone talk about it really)
Emily King - Scenery
Astronoid (self titled) (really dreamy...metal? if you're reading this I suggest checking it out)

This post has been great for filling in gaps and finding new shit. How'd I wait on listening to that Karen O/Dangermouse album so long -- stellar!

Haven't drawn up my own list yet but what's everyone bringing to the table? Anyone want to take a stab at a top 10/20?

This just something you been listening to a lot lately or was there a new recording this year?

I was lucky enough to see/hear My Brightest Diamond (Shara Worden-Nova) perform this w/the Indianapolis Symphony a few years back - she was wonderful and her voice meshed with the piece in a way I didn't expect. But the recording w/Dawn Upshaw is my favorite (she's so wonderful in just about anything).

52. "1st list: pop-ish, most played"
In response to Reply # 0

Listened to and enjoyed way too much new music to make a single best of this year, so I thought I'd do a few lists, starting with the most general and then winnowing them down to highlight some clear favorites from the year.

This is a large, broad list of my most played new records this year, mostly in order of release. I've starred ones that especially got a lot of play *and* are clear favorites for me, but other than that it's purely a matter of "did I play it a lot?". Next list I'll pull together some of my favorite pop albums regardless of how much replay they actually got.

- Emily King - Scenery*
- Choosey & Exile - Black Beans
- Andrew Bird - My Finest Work Yet*
- Damien Jurado - In the Shape of a Storm*
- Kevin Morby - Oh My God*
- Anderson Paak - Ventura*
- Kota - Foto*
- Jamila Woods - Legacy! Legacy!*
- Sault - 5 and 7
- Kirk Franklin - Long Live Love
- Quantic - Atlantic Oscillations
- Broken Social Scene - Let's Try the After Vols I and II
- weyes blood - titanic rising*
- Ybn Cordae - Lost Boy*
- Bryony Jarman-Pinto - Saffron Yellow*
- Springsteen - Western Stars
- Blu & Damu the Fudgemunk - Ground & Water*
- Snoh Aalegra - Ugh, those feels again*
- Murs & 9th - Iliad is Dead...
- Little Brother - May the Lord Watch*
- Raphael Saadiq - Jimmy Lee
- Skyzoo & Pete Rock - Retropolitan
- Brittany Howard - Jaime
- Sabrina Claudio - Truth Is*
- New Pornographers - In the Morse code of the Brakelights
- Wilco - Ode to Joy*
- Konradsen - Saints and Sebastian Stories
- Sorcha Richardson - First Prize Bravery
- Lucy Dacus - 2019
- FKA Twigs - Magdalene*
- Beck - Hyperspace
- DJ Shadow - Our Pathetic Age
- Gangstarr - One of the Best Yet

And for posterity, Apple Music (do a lot of streaming there) is telling me most five most played new records were Little Brother, Paak, Kota, Andrew Bird, and Damien Jurado (in that order).

I think I have listened to it a lot in part because I'm still figuring it out. There's a Karen Carpenter 70s soft rock-pop aesthetic throughout the whole record but something always leaves it askew: blurrier vocals, tracks layered to the point of muddiness, strangeness in the mix. The lyrics can be hard to make out, too. It's all intentional obviously but I keep feeling like I'm only getting part of the bigger picture -- which I think is part of what makes it a great record, there's a lot to discover.

First, non-hip-hop. Yes, no Kayranada and Free Nationals on here because I don't do streaming and consequently haven't heard them yet.

1. Sault – 5
2. Michael Kiwanuka
3. Anderson .Paak – Ventura
4. Raphael Saadiq – Jimmy Lee
5. Shafiq Husayn – In The Loop
6. Flying Lotus – Flamagra
7. Tuxedo – Tuxedo III
8. Sault – 7
9. Solange – When I Get Home
10. Tyler, The Creator – IGOR

Next, 30 favorite hip-hop EPs. List isn't complete and isn't in final, definitive order.

Benny the Butcher – The Plugs I Met
Action Bronson & Alchemist – Lamb Over Rice
Chong Wizard - The Space Stone
Smoke DZA & Benny the Butcher – Statue of Limitations
$auce Heist – Wasabi
Boldy James & Alchemist - Boldface

Chong Wizard – The Soul Stone
Planet Asia – All Gold Everything
Conway the Machine - Everyone is F.O.O.D. 3
Nowaah the Flood - The Worst is Yet to Come

Nest are my top 10 "in-between" projects: too long to be EPs, but too short to be albums. Essentially, releases that ran between 25 and 30 minutes.

Sean Price & Small Professor – ’86 Witness
DJ Muggs & Mach-Hommy – Kill ’Em All
DITC – DITC Studios Vol. 2
Curren$y and Statik Selektah – Gran Turismo
