for gassing dude up on his singing. Some folks don't like to be honest about artists who occasionally/used to post here.

His singing sounds...corny. And I take no pleasure in saying that, cuz he's one of my favorite rappers and seems like a really good dude.

But his singing is cheesy AF. Generic at best.


It is frustrating to see a GREAT rapper try so hard to be an (at best) average singer.

I like him as a rapper but not so much as a singer.

I was fine with the 2nd FE+ album Leave It All Behind because the music was SO GOOD that his meh singing was listenable.

But the fact that he's spent like 70% of his career content-wise singing rather than rapping is a fucking travesty.

And I agree with you guys that I *LOVE* Phonte, seems like a great dude and I've always and always will support his career no matter what he chooses to do.

But yea - I gave this like 30 seconds and turned it off once I realized where it was going lol.

I LOVE Leave It All Behind. Really like Tales from the Land of Milk and Honey too. And Authenticity is one that grew on me and I like a lot too. I think FE has a great catalogue.

The Phonte singing tracks on his two solo albums don’t do a whole lot for me though. I’ll still buy and listen to this. I loved his last solo though, so would’ve preferred to get more rapping. That album had some top notch songs.

He's probably reading this exchange, or is going to at some point...Welp.

So certainly no shade on my part. He’s got one of the best catalogues out there, as far as I’m concerned.

Just an observation that his singing records seem to hit more with FE than solo, to me. And I don’t know what I’m talking about from any kind of technical stand point well enough to analyze why, lol.

Ive got a long drive tomorrow, so I’ll definitely cop and give it some spins.

As well as all Phonte's solos, and all the LB records. And I'll always check for everything he puts out.

But his career was born here so I have to assume he's used to it and deaf to it. As he should be. His singing and overall talent is still a trillion levels above anything I have to offer from an artistic standpoint so what does my opinion matter haha.

What I don't think Phonte gets enough credit for are his vocal arrangements.
Listen to his work on Zo!'s ManMade and SkyBreak albums.
Even on songs he's not singing, you can hear his style in the adlibs and harmonies.

Same for Missy.
Same for Pharrell.
I think Phonte is right up there w/ them.
And the thing they have in common is that their vocal arrangements are so
good, I'm not really tripping over the singing.

If I recall, we debated a lot on here. I don’t think our music opinions are identical at all. I like his singing for what it is; it works with the music to create a mood. I feel the same way about Curtis. I wouldn’t bet on him in a singing contest against Aretha or Smokey, but his vocals work in the context of his songs.

At this point, I like Phonte’s sung songs more than his rap songs. Most rappers don’t put a lot of thought into song structure. I have fallen into the same trap a lot myself. This is why I find most rap songs boring to listen to, after almost 40 years of hearing verse, chorus, verse. 16, 8, 16. Rap is also word intensive. If you don’t have a topic that deserves as many words as the average rap verse, it’s gonna get drawn out pretty fast.

The way the music builds and the delivery of the last verse is so dope to me. That’s a great song IMO.

I like Beverly Hills a lot too. I’m not mad at this at all. He’s got water dripping sounds and shit. Some smooth springtime music.
