"New Vampire Weekend - Father of the Bride"
Mon Mar-11-19 02:54 PM by maro

album drops in april

They released 2 tracks in Jan and 2 tracks in Feb. Streaming services have them.

Took me a few listens, but not mildly obsessed with each track.

Especially Harmony Hall and Big Blue.

Not a HUGE fan, but I have always enjoyed their sound.

Always loved their song STEP where they cover the hook from Souls Of Mischief's step to my girl.

Anxious to see how they do after the one guy leaving. I liked the first two songs, wasn’t too impressed with the next two but just have them one quick listen. I’ll wait til I can listen to the album in full.

Their first album is among my favorites of the 00s. Such a tremendous, fun, easy-listening album front to back.

Who left the band ? Not that I really know of any of them individually haha just curious what instrument is being played by someone new.

He did all the orchestral stuff you've heard on VW songs. The elaborate compositions, ornate flourishes, etc. He was the classically-trained musician in a band full of guys who just like to play. For a lot of people, that's what sets the band apart.

I've always been a fan, but I'm not optimistic about what they'll sound like without him. It's still an automatic spin, though.

That will significantly impact my enjoyment level, I'd have to think. The complex orchestral arrangements and compositions are *exactly* what was appealing to me about them. Shit.

I can obviously google this but don't care to, if you know off the top of your head - haha, but why did he leave any idea ?

So I see that the first song is co-produced by Hans Zimmer....and has Danielle Haim on it.

....and it's a fucking Lumineers song.

That was disappointing, but overall I like the album but they were away so long that there's no way to be as good as one would expect it to be.

I think it's gonna be one of the records that people will come around on later.

Really hope that non-country artists making country records doesn't become the wave.

Lol..yeah I was scratching my over that Hans Zimmer co production credit too, turns out they sampled from one of his soundtracks

Just out of curiosity, why do you think this album is going to be grower? I been trying to keep an open mind out of respect for their previous work, but I just can't get with the old timey, simplicity of a lot of these songs. I actually really like all the singles that came out for the rollout, but literally all the other songs on the album are on a totally different vibe.

They could have pared this down to the best 10 songs and it might have been as good as Contra...but I think this is their worst album so far.

It has some great moments, some monotonous moments, some head-scratching moments, and a few clunkers. They sound like a band that lost a key member and now they're a little lost and trying to figure out who they want to be. They're spitballing.

some highlights (Harmony Hall) but they really should've pared down. Was considering seeing them this summer despite super expensive tickets, but this LP has convinced me not to

I have had this on rotation both in the foreground and background, and I got to say, the more I listen, the more I love it.

This will be their sleeper album that everyone will come to love by time the next album shows up.

We will re-visit this post then..... if it ever happens.

Explain why you like it. Because I really liked all the singles, but was way underwhelmed by the rest of the album, and still am now. I saw a live show of theirs recently, and all the new album cuts they performed fell flat then as well

Revisiting this morning bc I've had 2021 stuck in my head. They released "4042" a few weeks ago which has two very long (20 min!), very different versions of 2021, one featuring Sam Gendel, the other someone named Goose. The Sam Gendel one caught me by surprise and I've been humming the main tune now for days.

Anyhow, I liked this album when it was released but my appreciation for it has only deepened. I get the critique that it's a bit bloated in terms of length and agree to a point, yet I don't think there's a song I don't like on here and I'm not sure what I would cut. If anything, I might resequence as two shorter, tighter, more cohesive releases.

Yes, I even like the opening track. (Someone in this thread called it a Lumineers track, which made me laugh but no...)

I also like that it's a legitimately *fun* album despite being, lyrically, quite dark at times.

edit: aaah, pushed post too soon but actually, I want to finish a listen before I highlight a few favorites, so I'll be back

I got that 4042 was 2021 * 2 -- but I didn't notice that both of the new versions are 20 min 21 seconds each...

years back, I posted a track I made called 'vampire weekend' up on soundcloud. there was zero connection to the band, but the title made sense to me for whatever reason at the time.

my page has mostly been gathering dust these days, but within the past year or so, nearly all of the few plays and reposts I get are on that one track. no comments, tho.

out of curiosity, I clicked on some of the profiles who reposted — turns out they've reposted *other* tracks also called Vampire Weekend. it's weird. some kinda bot-powered guerilla marketing thing?
