" New Madlib and Freddie Gibbs/The Bandana Post "

There seems to be a lot of interest in this sequel project. I still haven't finished listening to Pinata (LOL!) as Gibbs isn't my cup of tea but for all of you folks who care...here ya go.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib Preview New Music Off Of "Bandana"
https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/freddie-gibbs-and-madlib-preview-new-music-off-of-bandana-news.68172.html

"...The follow-up to Freddie Gibbs and Madlib's Bandana seems to be coming soon. The two took to social media to share a 20-second snippet of unreleased music from their highly anticipated project. The post includes a photo of Quasimoto smoking a cigarette on top of a zebra. Gibbs shared the post with the caption, "Part🦓 🦓" while Madlib simply shared the post..."

Actually, more than cool, but I don't want to get too excited in the event it's not a "real", full album (i.e. I can walk into my local store and cop something or order it online).

Also, as one of the original Madlib fiends of the world it's been tough transitioning to this "one Madlib project every 2-3 years" pace he's been at so I'm hyped but guardedly so (*protects heart*).

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

Flip it enough? Flip these. Flip off. Go flip some f*cking burgers.(c)Kno

I feel like this started when he left Stones Throw and shifted focus on Madlib Invazion/Now-Again with Egon.

Beyond that, he's getting older. Maybe he's not producing as much and more focused on business, family, etc. I don't know.

He may also be opting for quality over quantity. And possibly clearing samples? That last part alone could take months, maybe longer if things get contentious.

Someone started a new post about it here:
http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=3014051&mesg_id=3014051&page=

Sidebar, I'm seeing reports that Madlib may have recorded an album with Mac Miller?
https://www.thefader.com/2019/02/20/mac-miller-madlib-album-maclib
The Mac Miller project has not been confirmed but it's believable. There was a photo of them together on the 'gram. I admit I've never listened to Mac Miller but my gut feeling tells me I likely won't be a fan. I already shared that I don't really care for Gibbs. So, I really wish Madlib would collaborate with more artists that I actually want to hear from (see: the Black Star project that has yet to drop...)

Madlib and his brother, Oh No!, have a new song on the Gangster Doodles, Vol. 1 album. Kaytranada, Onra (!) and others have joints on there, too: Rappcats post: https://www.rappcats.com/gangstermusic/
The music video:

Yeah, I'm keeping my eye out for that on a lanky-lank I found on Reddit earlier this year.

I was looking for Raw Cake 1 & 2, but I could only find No. 3 & 4...

I saw this on social when the feature debuted about two weeks but I forgot to post here.

Entertainment Weekly interviewed Madlib and Gibbs for the recent double Music Issue (May 17-24) with Taylor Swift's sorry behind on the cover. It's a single page on pg. 53. Nothing super interesting but just a FYI.

The tail end quotes Gibbs sharing that the upcoming release is No. 2 in a trilogy.

George Clinton is featured in this issue, too.

The first time I'm of the opinion where Madlib clearly outshines whatever Gibbs is doing on the mic. I still want to hear the album in full though.

With that said, I need to hear an instrumental for this song. Stat.

THIS.

The whole time, I was oscillating between “The production is so good” and “I wish another artist was on this track.”

I’m actually kind of annoyed. I really don’t “get” Gibbs. He’s mediocre. Zzzzzzz.

Why did Egon let this happen?! LOL.

Madlib should be pissed off. The article gave the impression he's still is doing business under Stones Throw while that hasn't been the case for years now. He released Pinata under his Rappcats label when it originally dropped. Stones Throw had nothing to do with that release.

Interesting Freddie Gibbs would name drop Run The Jewels in the aspect he did since Killer Mike is on a song for this album if memory serves me right.

Yeah, I caught that. Hopefully, it will be fixed. I posted a thread in here not too long ago about why Madlib left. Peanut Butter Wolf explained Madlib and Egon's departure on an episode of Questlove Supreme.

To make a long story short, can you give a brief version of Peanut Butter Wolf's account of the departure? I don't have Spotify, so I don't have access to Questlove's show.

I could be wrong, but it doesn't appear as if Stones Throw is all that interested in rap based of what I've seen them release these days.

The show is on Pandora, not Spotify.
https://www.pandora.com/station/4012524487941571019

Here's the thread: http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=3014790&mesg_id=3014790&listing_type=search

As recapped by the website, Ambrosia For Heads:
https://ambrosiaforheads.com/2019/03/peanut-butter-wolf-madlib-mfdoom-j-dilla-lootpack-questlove/

“At 1:32:00, Phonte asks Peanut Butter Wolf about parting ways with Madlib and Stones Throw’s former label manager, Eothen “Egon” Alapatt. Throughout his career, Madlib has done projects outside of Stones Throw, including Blue Note and BBE. However, in the early 2010s, he began to release much of his material outside the Los Angeles, California-based label. “It’s kind of a long story,” begins Wolf. “With Madlib and Egon, who used to run , things weren’t creatively working out between Egon and I, and I had to let Egon go. He basically took Madlib with him. He gave Madlib his own deal, his own label. Madlib’s stuff theoretically comes out on . He still does some stuff for us. He scored the movie and did the soundtrack for that. It’s a loving relationship, but you know. Egon’s more involved in that.”

Also:
“Wolf, who is an accomplished artist, DJ, and producer says that Madlib’s subsequent control of the mix grew challenging as Stones Throw tried to shop him to artists....”

---

Obvioulsy, there's more to it but I wouldn't expect all parties involved to discuss that publically. I read an interview in the past where Madlib seem to frame his age/skin in the game as part of the reason why was breaking away from Stones Throw. At the time, he was still in his 30s and he said something like, "I'm almost 40. It's time I do my own thing."

We know Madlib interviews are rare. The writing here was fine but it’s a lot of not-new info for serious Madlib heads.

There were a few little gems here that I’d like future interviewers to dig into:

>>> “Madlib says he threw his cell away about ‘three or four years ago’ and just has an iPad for texting. “Problems,” he deadpans. ‘Too many calls.’ “

>>>”When I’m on tour, that’s the main thing to do. Hang with chefs...”

>>> “A couple of years ago I stopped making beats—I couldn’t do it for a year and a half. But ever since then I haven’t stopped.”

>>> “I used to hang with Earl Sweatshirt, and we used to trade music, so I probably influenced him in a certain way, and he influenced me in a certain way.”

Sidebar: I wish I could get my hands on that early Mtume record the writer mentions.

The interview was held at the Rappcats space.... They have a pop-up tomorrow (6/8/2019) in LA tomorrow, featuring the collection of Henry Franklin. www.instagram.com/p/ByLJ_3vpnHt/

Yeah, I did my best to draw more out of him, but he simply wasn't having it that day. Not to mention he was under the weather and a few questions and answers were edited out of my copy.

Nice guy, great energy, just hella quiet. I did what I could.

I completely understand. I watched his Red Bull Academy interview with Chairman Mao so I already knew what you were up against. One word responses and shit. LOL.

Edited to add: I am a former journalist so I understand the editing process, and how content is sometimes cut out. So frustrating!

no shade to you personally, and you did say some questions/answers were edited out of the final copy, but most of everything you asked has been asked to Madlib several times in his career. did the digital outlet give you editorial guidance? had you perhaps not read up thoroughly on Madlib? did you feel otherwise uncomfortable with asking more direct or specific or unusual questions?

To be fair, I don’t think Madlib thinks folks are too basic to “get” his weird self; he just doesn’t like talking to strangers.

From what I’ve read, he’s a normal dude around his friends.

I’m really curious to know how these interviews happen. Is Egon or some other person encouraging him to do press when he doesn’t want to?

Is he afraid/too nice to tell writers/media outlets “no” so he says "yes," anyway?

Rappcats is selling a vinyl only version that's supposed to be slightly different compared to the commercially available version. I would be highly surprised if that 'leaks'. I suppose it is possible someone will rip it once someone has it in their hands though.

68. "wow. So I got my hands on the regular not the deluxe."
In response to Reply # 0

So haven’t heard Calm Before, Cocaine Parties in LA, and Belly of the Beast
and hope the vinyl is the deluxe because the other version doesn’t include the title track.

Unless the leak just ends after Soul Right.

Gotta have the title track on the vinyl though
because of the assassin feature. Makes more sense to have it
due to the echo, bit of reverb, beat switches throughout album.
Bandana got a little soundclash vibe to me.
Lots of interesting little tweaks happening throughout songs.

Gibbs and Madlib giving us a trilogy.
Piñata was a lot of clean sounding beats. Not a lot of grit and dirt in the beats.
A little too polished for a Madlib production imo. Bandana is a looser vibe.
Still hard but not as much sheen.

This album will be in rotation heavy for me.
Gibbs sounding great on here and Madlib killing shit on here.

In response to Reply # 68

All those bonus tracks are just the bonus/b-side from the Flat Tummy Tea 12" (Rappcats states "Other tracks are exclusive to this 12-inch release.") Cocaine Parties in LA was a 12" released a couple years ago.
So maybe this leak has the bonus tracks, but the actual LP won't have them.

but I am curious if this album would have turned out differently if he didn't get locked up for that incident overseas since Gibbs said he started to work on this around the time he got detained if memory serves me right.

I am so excited to see how much of this album he'll perform in concert on his NYC tour stop in July.

and the way Gibbs just seamlessly spits during the beat change is a thing of amazement.

Since this is the second time Black Thought rhymed on a Gibbs track, I do wonder if Gibbs will eventually appear on a future Roots track. That would be quite stellar.

My favorite part of the album, too. Madlib is a black belt master at flippin' them samples. The way he uses that same Sylvers joint on both 'Fake Names' (second part) and Palmolive is out of this world.

really liking the the album so far! even tho i have to admit i‘ll might only cop the instrumentals on wax. only thing i was a bit dissapointed in was the sonic quality of mix/master.

To people like US, a record is a piece of history. A moment in time.
Most people don't get it.

Absolutely. It’s crazy how much functionality is available with all these lil iOS apps.

I mean, Damon Albarn made The Gorillaz “The Fall” on an iPad almost 10 years ago:
https://medium.com/micro-chop/the-gorillaz-made-an-entire-album-with-an-ipad-46cfbd78ee01

Personally, I haven’t looked back since I started making beats on my iPhone two years ago. I was in a boring ass staff meeting at work one day, and I decided to open up GB and just fool around. Haven’t touched my old gear since.

On paper, I thought Education would be my favorite, but it’s not. Leaning towards Cataracts. Madlib snapped and Gibbs rode every beat Madlib gave him. Gibbs is also sprinkling jewels in there. Enough for me to forgive the anti vaxxer line.

I love love love this album. I hope folks don’t move away from it too quickly. It really would be a damn shame if so.

1. Here's the Boiler Room set from last week:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6ZREgdXgsQ

2. It’s a damn shame the boards were down when Gibbs was talking that shit about being better than Doom on Rosenberg's show.

3. Still not a MAJOR fan of Gibbs but I found myself warming up to him even more after watching him rap with his son in his lap: https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Zm3Vjn-Ml/

4. Speaking of IG; If you aren’t following Egon/Now Again on IG right now, you are missing all the behind-the-scenes/overseas tour Madlib goodness: https://www.instagram.com/nowagain/?hl=en

Por ejemplo: https://www.instagram.com/p/B1U0u9IpIRx/

5. On another note, did anyone notice that “Education” was originally Edited & Recorded by J.Rocc? I just caught that looking the album credits on Bandcamp yesterday.

10 mins in and I am cringing. Not feeling this set at all. YES Gibbs can rap and got that breath control but he sounds like a better Ja'Rule here. Plus, this whole vibe in the boiler room is just strange. Feels fake as fuck. I'll just go back to listening to bandana, no need to watch it.

good catch. This is def the odd track out on the album. Not much discussion here as well regarding the fact its Yasiin and Black Thought. Gibbs is such the afterthought when I hear this track. I am always like.. oh right... Gibbs is on here too.

Black Though destroys as per usual.

Shoutout to that dude who gave Gibbs his hat tho.

I think I spotted one Black guy in the crowd LOL

They were hype and knew a lot of the words tho

The person saying Gibbs sounded like a better Ja Rule is bugging. Gibbs uses a lot of different patterns on his work with Madlib and he pulled it off live pretty flawlessly despite being obviously drunk. I’d like to see anyone on here do those songs one tenth as well while drinking a Fifth.

*Gilles Peterson Worldwide interview with Egon + music playlist
I'm not done listening to this yet but it was cool because Madlib is in conversation mode with his homies rather than interview mode with a journalist (see: his awkward Red Bull Music Academy interview with Jeff Chairman Mao).
https://worldwidefm.net/show/gilles-peterson-with-madlib-and-egon/
It's on Mixcloud, too: https://www.mixcloud.com/worldwidefm/gilles-peterson-with-madlib-egon-20-11-2019/
He chats about his hero, Roy Ayers; leaving Stones Throw/how tour life is different now; his mentor, Weldon Irvine and more...

En Champagne avec Madlib & Egon
*Featuring Madlib dancing and singing to James Brown
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t2gsWBZymA
If you follow Egon on IG, you know he and Madlib love wine.

Speaking of wine...

Madlib and Egon were featured in the wine mag, Noble Rot (Issue No. 21)
https://shop.noblerot.co.uk/products/issue-21
https://www.instagram.com/p/B4FnwX3pMT9/

And here's a Madlib and Gibbs interview in major French publication, Le Monde circa October 2019
https://www.lemonde.fr/culture/article/2019/10/28/ombre-et-lumiere-dans-le-rap-de-freddie-gibbs-et-madlib_6017165_3246.html

I don't know if and when that NPR Tiny Desk concert with Gibbs will drop, but hopefully, it's soon...

Off topic: I'm slippin' on Worldwide FM. There are so many interviews I need to listen to. I just found one with drummer Chris Dave that I will be checking out later this week! https://worldwidefm.net/show/brownswood-basement-gilles-peterson-with-chris-dave/

A few songs each. The only ones that tend to go longer are those that lend themselves to long pieces (jazz performances) or those that are done for a special reason (that recent Saadiq one was 35 minutes but for a special feature, I think).

Thought the set was pretty much perfect as it was - but definitely wouldn't mind a whole re-recording of Bandana with this kind of set up.

Gibbs' style combined with the band, especially Marco Benevento on the keys, takes me back to bell bottoms, that zodiac sign poster and weed.

You don't often see love and genuine affection shown between two grown ass men like that. Especially two men that work together. I get the biggest smile on my face every time I see it.

It's only five minutes long but there are some gems.

My favorite responses were the record he always keeps with him, what he listens to at home the most and his favorite producer (It's not Dilla or Pete Rock or anyone else most would guess...it's Paul C. The J Dilla of the 1980s?)

Pinata was my favorite album the year it dropped, so I was highly anticipating this one. But when it dropped, I think it just came and went due to me having too high of expectations for it. I enjoyed it, thought it was a good record, but I kind of just left it at that. To me it didn't match the quality of Pinata, so I didn't have a positive reaction to it.

Then I revisited it when I noticed the instrumentals were out. Now let me make this clear, I'm not one of those "ERR WHY DOESNT MADLIB WORK WITH BETTER RAPPERS" dudes, I'm a Gibbs fan and consider him a solid emcee. But listening to these beats without the vocals I'm catching so much more and appreciating the overall sound of the album so much more. Been listening to the instrumentals as well as the album proper for the last several days. I was definitely sleeping.

Not sure where I stand on Pinata v. Bandana, but I am definitely leaning towards Bandana's beats > Pinata's.

Can't wait for Montana, but in the meantime I'm gonna go listening to those Pinata instrumentals. Maybe I'll find some layers I missed there as well.

Bandana instrumentals one of my fav releases of this year so far.
1000% correct that can hear more layers in the instrumentals,
I’m guessing due to mix of Gibbs vocals just sort of sitting on top the beats for lack of better wording. This is how his vocals are mixed on all his albums.

Massage seats is one of my favorite beats in a while.
The 2nd half of Flat Tummy Tea is a great Dilla tribute.

I am actually using the bandana I got for ordering the exclusive version of the Half Manne Half Cocaine 12 inch from Madlib's website as a face covering to somewhat protect myself.

I didn't think I would ever have to use it, but here we are.

"Update: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib release “1964” and “1974” editions of their album Piñata were planned for Record Store Day, April 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Record Store Day is on hold, and so is Piñata ’74, a Record Store exclusive. However, stock of Piñata ’64 will be shipped from Rappcats as soon as vinyl is available, which we expect to be mid May 2020"

"Standard US edition: 1/LP. Lacquered by Dave Cooley at Elysian Masters and pressed at Memphis Record Pressing.
.

RAPPCATS edition: 1/LP - the Madlib Invazion version of the album cut to vinyl early in the process, before we knew what samples we could clear. While the actual track list remains the same on both versions, we look at this one as Madlib’s “Director’s Cut.” Unique sleeve containing some 70s Zebra painting and a bunch of tags found in a gas station bathroom by Ross Harris. Laquered by Dave at Elysian and pressed at IRP.
.

The second EU half-speed lacquer edition: 1/LP. Lacquered at half-speed by Metropolis Mastering in the UK for fuller volume and fidelity and pressed at Optimal. You can tell you have this album based on the retail sticker and the inscribe and label variation, pictured here.
.

Bernie Grundman lacquer test press edition: 1/LP . Test press only. Lacquered by legendary mastering engineer Bernie Grundman and never commercially manufactured. Pressed in the EU at Optimal, Grundman’s preferred pressing plant.
.

Vinyl Me, Please edition: 1/LP. Same as the standard US edition. Cover variations. Can you tell what was changed?
.

Bandana Beats edition 1/LP: Lacquered by Dave at Elysian and pressed at Memphis Record Pressing. This is the instrumental we made when we couldn’t do a radio edit. Love the cover on this one."

On a related note, here's an update on Pinata 64', which is shipping now: https://www.instagram.com/p/CATDh2tp1kI/
"This is a single LP, remastered version of the album we issued 6 years ago. I never liked the way it played on vinyl over two LP’s, so this edit condensed the album to the maximum amount of time that could be etched onto a single piece of wax. It was then lacquered at half speed by Metropolis in England."
