"'Drogas Wave' will be a tough benchmark to beat in 2k18"
Fri Sep-21-18 12:42 AM by IslaSoul

True successor to Tetsuo & Youth (& apparently 'The Cool' also)
As per usual very dense, lots to digest.
24 tracks, 98 minutes
and even though it might be too early, probably his most cohesive work to date.

I still feel like I need to iisten to Lupe's albums with a stack of books next to me for reference but I like that.

This album will take several listens for me to form a full opinion but I really like what I'm hearing so far.

I would consider myself a Lupe stan...he's been my favorite rapper since F&L. I listen to Lazers, regularly. It was prolly about 2 years after T&Y dropped that I was playing what is probably my 2nd favorite song on the album, Adoration of the Magi, when the chorus just smacked me in the face:

Why you ready to die, you just a baby
https://t2.genius.com/unsafe/220x220/https%3A%2F%2Fimages.genius.com%2Fe6cce6ad5c26175653cd5e5590b6e235.1000x1000x1.jpg

why them tears up in yo eyes, you just a baby

keep yo head up in the sky, you just a baby
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/42/Drake_-_Nothing_Was_the_Same_cover.png/220px-Drake_-_Nothing_Was_the_Same_cover.png

keep chasing money...nevermind, you just a baby
https://i0.wp.com/www.rockandrollgps.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Nirvana-Nevermind-Album-Cover.jpg

Ugh...I be trying to not always run to Rap Genius, so I was WILD late...but, damn...who thinks like that? So much embedded in every verse, every line.

...I'm from the era when A.I. was the answer, now they think ai is the answer - Marlon Craft

It's a great fucking record that's super lyrical but it's a chore to listen to. Standouts off of the first listen are Sun God Sam & The California Drug Deals and WAV Files (dude started naming the actual slaves ships, damn.)

Most Lu records have a section inside the verse that have reprieve, give you a second to not think.....here he doesn't let up, if you don't get it, you'll just be lost. Even the hooks while they aren't complicated, you will still be lost if you don't think.

Def not for first timers tho, if they aren't used to listening to Skyzoo or Kendrick album cuts (stuff in that direction at least) I wouldn't recommend this too much.

....now if Skulls is better than this I don't know what to do lol.

I follow him relatively closely on Twitter and, from what I remember, he never made it clear that it was going to be an album. I mean if it is then great, but I didn't even have those hopes up until now.

Man, so many stand out tracks!

I was worried when I saw that long ass track list that the album was gonna drag but it didn't for me at all.

I gotta give it some more spins but this is gonna end up being my favorite Lu album. The production is slick and lyrically this dude is on another planet.

Choosing the tone of the song, rather than dark and tragic like Jonylah, to just be overjoyed and celebratory..amazing shit.

I think everyone will be in agreement that this album is a milestone. Reading through some reddit threads ...

"Drogas Wave is based on a story about a group of slaves that jumped off of a slave ship transporting them from Africa,” Lupe says. “The slaves did not drown, and instead somehow managed to live under the sea. They spent the rest of their underwater existence sinking slave ships. ‘Drogas’ is the Spanish word for drugs. I made it an acronym which stands for ‘Don’t Ruin Us God Said.’”

"The majority of Wave was recorded in my house. Me and Simon turned a closet into the mic booth and the adjacent bedroom into the control room. Very low tech and low budget all on a laptop with protools and ableton with a couple good mic pre’s. Most of the verse rehearsing and pre-recording was done on my iPhone. it cut out having to travel back and forth to the studio and i could just wake up and record if I wanted to."

this brother here man, "dots & lines" was my favorite track on Tetsuo, and I still have the second half to get to, but he made that song look like amateur hour and that's not even a knock, if he really retires he going on the highest note

thanks for the excerpt about the people who jumped from the ship because "Down" makes more sense now

the way yall describing these tracks Im about scrared to hear the second half lol

"Alan Forever" has to be one of the most poignantly descriptive songs I've heard in years, all genre aside

I got a handful of rappers that I feel could evolve and retrograde rap on a Last Poets vibe and Lu is definitely on that list

PEACE LOVE and MONEY

Interesting that in 2017-2018 when music is as disposable as ever and people have short attention spans, some of what I'd consider the best rap double albums ever are being released - Big KRIT, OneBeLo, and now Lupe.

I'll give it a listen.
Lupe is one of my favorite authors, not just emcees.
I respect that he uses hip hop and music as the medium to push his writing.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't though.
He's clearly one of the best to ever put words together in hip hop.
No one can dispute that.
But as far as making good MUSIC - he's been pretty hit or miss for me
his entire career.

Though that first and fifteenth: revenge of the nerd mixtape
and the bootleg F&L will always hold a special place in my heart.

I thought he was gonna be one of my favorites ever after RotN mixtape.

that was one thing that blew me away from KRS when i first got into him, he really had different styles and would rap completely differently on different tracks. dont see that too much. gift has a few different styles he flips between but hard to see someone approach KRS levels.

only the cool comes close for me(and I love the cool). Tetsuo and Love was close to a good Lupe album for me, but this completely destroyed my expectations. AOTY in a year with several great albums for me.

With something so horrid?
You became boards for the floors and the doors of the warships
Anthropomorphic, the forest returned with a match
Made from itself and said, "Burn us with that"
Then left again and came back with an axe
We can serve you as furniture or furnace us black"

Just one of the many (so many) amazing displays of creative writing.
The whole album is a masterclass.
Been listening non-stop since friday, not one track I'd even think of skipping.

I felt this way when Tetsuo dropped too ... and again during Pharoah Height. He was written off way too prematurely IMO but has been consistently putting out quality music this whole time. This album SHOULD catapult him back in the "mainstream" top MC discussion, but it won't. And I don't like it, but I get it

I have not heard Mural Jr. yet and I want to so bad. I want to have it show up in the proper order of the album though. Alan Forever had me tearing up in the supermarket today. What an amazing and touching song. A true work of art. There is so much to unpack on this album. Glad we got another one of these from Lu.

It's tremendous. The album of the year would be an understatement. I don't know what else to say.

I bought this digitally, but I need that vinyl. I need more than vinyl, I need a wu-tang martin fuckhead box.

What's wild is that this doesn't feel like a 24 track album (or 19 song album) to me. A lot of the songs here feel like they're paired together, so I end up on the other side of the album without even noticing. It's an emotional journey about life, saving yourself, and saving others. It's a shame this won't get recognized for what it is, but hopefully it serves as an influence to those who check it out.

And doesn't drag at all!
It feels on par with Tetsuo & Youth, an album I still listen to regularly.
Looking forward to the internet to unpack all the deeper meaning I'm not catching yet.
This might be the best produced Lupe album (or most consistent in awhile)
Been more than a decade since I've bought I've bought a physical release but feeling the pull to buy a damn cd. Well done Lupe.

Wow.

If Lupe ends on this like he's hinting I can't even be mad. I'm greedy so I'll always want more but man this is quite a body of work. This album is something else. I damn near cry EVERY TIME I listen to Alan Forever. I almost don't let songs finish because I feel like if a line went by and I wasn't actively listening I might miss something big so I go back to the beginning. No other albums grab my attention like this. Job well done.

And I still have Mural Jr to come

It shows a true lack of critical thought...

But again reviews nowadays are trash because every reviewer goes into a review expecting what THEY want to hear and if that is not what the artist decides (of if there is anything deeper than the surface) then they buck at the outcome...

P4K been trash though, that's the second great album they do wrong this year (first would be Phonte's No News is Good News, which they didn't review at all, perhaps for the better).

A lot of these terrible reviews get focused on the few lines he has where he is addresses the sea creatures. I've seen this pointed out in multiple reviews. Get the fuck over it. it's like 2 lines and honestly.... i love it.

There are 10k other verses on this album!!! It's clear the canned reviews are from folks who are not listening. It's hard to listen to this album and NOT be immediately wowed by Lupe's lyrical dexterity and in-depth conceptual subject matter.

As many of you have also mentioned, listening to other hip-hop songs right now is hard to do as it pales in comparison.

one of the few times a put on Jamaican accent hasn't seemed annoying as hell (looking at you Meth)

Why can Lupe rap so good in Spanish? And what is he saying?

A lot of reviewers say that Down is "corny" or critique the juxtaposition of the underwater slaves befriending sea creatures. But something about Nikki's vocals make this just work for me, one of my favorite tracks actually.

Producers laced this album! Stack That Cheese is the only lowlight for me. The majority of the production feels very evocative, the album really does a cinematic feel to it.

"you can accomplish anything if you can survive blackness" gives me Kendrick "Alright" feelz.

mainly because they say the hook is corny and go onto the next. I personally love the hook, but whatever.

They completely ignore the rest of the song. The theme, the approach, the beat. That last part really sticks out to me:

One time for my homies at the bottom
told some lies, keep it real for the bottom
some of y'all ain't allowed at the bottom
9th ward, it was down at the bottom
Katrina had it down at the bottom
Pine Ridge, it be feeling like the bottom
Gaza Strip, it be tough at the bottom
So you gotta give it up to the bottom

Some only want to talk about the top
but I wanna talk about the bottom

I know everything got a lot
but I want them to know that I got them

Yeah, yeah.

XXL gave it a L (also pointing out Down)
Other reviews call it bloated, that it needs editing
In my opinion this album has no filler at all and it might
just be my favorite album of his. It has been non-stop on repeat (I took a brief break yesterday for the new Cypress & Wayne, but went back immediately after that). The storytelling is so rich, it's such a rewarding listen. It's currently 70% @ metacritic

It's so weird that no one can hear this SUPER obvious connection...

The transition from the past to the present (of the longchains) on down..

Atlantis to Katrina...

Bottom of the sea floor is the "hood" bottom.. that is WHY they are so cool with the fishes and other creatures...

everybody kinfolk in the hood

This is that Star Wars esque discovery point that lies in all hero mythology...

It lays out the next half..

it is fairly obvious but most reviewers have not picked up on this, generally focusing on pretty surface level critiques. Few have bothered to analyze the various themese of the album past the more in your face mythology of the Longchains. I wonder if he hadn't shared that info would the album be viewed in a different lens?

Lupe usually loses me somewhere along the way with his albums. I listened to The Cool recently to compare and I think Drogas Wave may have that beat as well.

The critic response is perplexing but whatever.

I'm not expecting everyone to dive to the depths of this album

But I don't understand the music critiques

Dope beats, BARZ and hooks...not sure what the problem is...?

I don’t know who did it first. But it sounds like some of Wiz commercial shit but worse. No Wiz hate because I fucks with some of his mixtapes. Wale also switched up to this kind of rhyme style and he became successful off it. Me personally I don’t like it and I don’t give a shit who did it first. I feel the same way about the production.

The energy was on tilt. It was my first time seeing Nikki Jean live and she was not what I was expecting.

Lupe was on 10 the whole night. Really good song selection and even the songs that I wasn't a huge fan of like Freedom Ain't Free worked when he recited the vocals again without the beat slowly for everyone to follow along. I was super happy that he did at least one verse of Alan Forever. Thanks to Nikki Jean for convincing him to do it. Damn I love that song.

An unexpected highlight was him doing (and really loving) Cripple. Man that song is great.

I wasn't

You mean for the concept? Don't think so (not 100% sure though). Lupe has talked a bit about the origins of the myth after he found his first Manilla on IG

Yea I dug in to their concept real quick before responding pretty crazy...

But they do stand for different things which is important

Drogas wave is based on a new fable.. a new myth... which is a first in rap.. rather than a concept album..

At its core I love the idea that you push the idea of a water mythology as a strength to a group of people who are stereotypically averse to it..

The idea of resurrection through it is powerful to say the least

but didn't think it was as good as Tetsuo & Youth. after several listens and lyric readings on Genius the first third of the album jumped out at me as the highlights. now i'm finally really delving into the 2nd and 3rd acts and man... this might be better than Tetsuo & Youth. the raw emotion on this album pushes it just a notch over IMO. we'll see how it shakes out over the next year or two, T&Y is an album i still constantly play.

Alan Forever... yikes...

The singing of King Nas reminded me a bit of Mos as well.

Very impressive album, both Part 1 & 2 could stand on its own easily. The only song I'm a bit meh about is XO, the 'crossover hit' sound and hook kind of sticks out too much.

The thing that saves it though is he is rapping his ass off in every verse.

I keep going back to the new roc marci and binary star albums, and while both those are lyrical giants, Drogas is simply amazing.

Someone said King Nas sounds like a Nujabes production, which is why I love it so damn much.

Similar to TPAB, this album hits not only from an aesthetic level but emotionally. I really needed to hear this album at this particular time in my life.

when comparing it to Tetsuo & Youth. that one had its moments too but this one is deep on many levels.

Even XO and Down which seems to be the two most reviewers dismiss are solid tracks.

In response to Reply # 142

...which is ironic

when I first got the album, that was the song I was most anticipating

being that Mural is one of the greatest rap displays EVAH

...a parakeet that beatbox, so when the sunrise the beat drop...

but I got so lost in the first half of the album

fell down the wormhole of lyric genius and youtube clips to decipher the first half of the album

There's alot of great one liners on the album

but Mural Jr has so many

Fit the whole life of a booth into half a line

etc...

but the one that really got me was

If it was more small it'd be moore's law

took me a minute to catch that one

But yeah, I've had Mural Jr on repeat for a few days now.

It’s rare when an album gives you the feeling of saying “yo this is my shit” and then the next song comes on and you say “yo this is my shit!” and continues that ALL the way through the damn album!

I’ve been quiet with my opinion as I’ve been taking this in but I don’t know if there’s ever been a hip-hop that had that impact on *this* level of quality.

Amazing piece of art.

In response to Reply # 151

That it seems like the critics completely missed the mark on this. In fact, the lack of real dialog about this album save for here and reddit (and I'm sure other low key hip hop head - lupe stan sites), raises a crucial eyebrow in the name of attention deficit and the main stream media's ability to absorb and critique insightfully. It's one thing to critique and not agree with the points made, its another to critique and not make many points at all, let alone having some that are up for debate.

We need a dayum okp listening party ....
