"Kanye West - Ye"

1. I Thought About Killing You
2. Yikes
3. All Mine
4. Wouldn't Leave
5. No Mistakes
6. Ghost Town
7. Violent Crimes

short, but surprisingly lucid, energetic, and well-sequenced. Far leaner and more inspired than Pablo, with plenty of commentary on mental illness (in a way, it may contextualize the last month's worth of asshole behavior.)

I just wrote my feelings of this in GD... copy and pasted from there.

This reminds me of a couple of other lackluster albums from some of my favorite artists with amazing discographies.

Arcade Fire - Everything Now
Huge anticipation built around it. It drops, and its not baaaaaaad but I find myself wanting to like it more than I do, and it never really gets into rotation other than a song or two when I was ready to bump it non-stop.

Beastie Boys - To the Five Boroughs
'ye' is like if the bboys dropped a 20 min TT5B with no 'Open Letter to NYC', no 'Rhyme the Rhyme Well', and no 'Ch-check it out' all while running around in interviews saying that they support Bush in Iraq.

Again... its not bad as much as it is forgettable. Its just kinda boring, which for Kanye is almost worse than risky but bad. And for all the BS that he's been saying lately, he needed to drop a great album. Instead, we got an EP sounding only like the lackluster tracks from Pablo with none of the great ones.

Still got the pusha album and hope for the Cudi and Nas albums...

And said out loud to myself something like “aww, fuck this corny asshole and his dramatic bullshit”.

When Eminem started scream rapping all dramatic and serious on “Whatever You Say I Am”, I tuned him out. Haven’t cared since. He was never one of my favorites though.

Kanye was legit one of my favorites at one point. Even through the last decade of hit or miss stuff I’ve remained interested.

Not anymore.

After that it gets better, but off one listen the only songs I really like were No Mistakes and Violent Crimes. Wouldn’t Leave is cool. Ghost Town....too power balladish for me.

3 or maybe 2 1/2 outta 7. That’s about the best I get out of a Kanye album these days, as the last time I really liked more than half the songs was Graduation.

Is he the Kanye of old? No.

Are we able to appreciate him for where he is in his life and artistry? Yes. I think we can if we can get past where and who he was. He's probably been this person all of his life but, now, we are more privy to it since he's suffered loss and other real life stuff. All that to say: I understand that I need to appreciate that he is doing the best that he can with what he has available to give at this moment.

There's nothing, from 1 - 7, that I have heard and that I don't like and that I can't associate with in some way, shape, or form.

Check Cyhi’s twitter, dude is a legit moron.

I LOVED late registration like yall.

But we really loved Rhymefest, Cons, etc.

This dude didnt regress- he just started running
with a different (much worse) crowd.

And thats all Kanye is- a reflection of who hes
hanging with, paying for verses, and stealing
from.

I honestly wish people would ignore him.

Plenty of great and original music out there.

I failed.

I still dont hear this.

I hear odd and/or badly mixed samples w sparse electrodrums, minimalism in a "the author lacked creativity and tech skill" way... I hear an engineer that tried to clean these mixes up and did a solid job of making them sound clinical. I hear a rapper tryna hit notes that are way beyond his technical reach w no real control. I see a cover that says: I didnt really take this seriously, downplaying the work of 100k+ educated people, that breathe that specific creative branch. This is some shit, and I SERIOUSLY CANT BELIEVE WTF people out here cheering. This might be personal progression, but it sure as hell aint musical.

even if the latter is sort of this conservative protectionism of daughters in an old fashioned manner, but I can understand where it's coming from. And some of the other tracks are growing on me with more listens as well. Coming out right after DAYTONA doesn't exactly help, but I'm not on the hate train that everyone else is on.

This is sort of a mix between Yeezus and TLOP sonically:
the electro tinge and sharp strange hits of Yeezus
with the future gospel, 808s, organs and liquid bass lines of TLOP.

I said in the Daytona thread that the 7 songs needed more narrative
whether through skits, intro / outros, audio clips to hold it all together
because the 7 songs on their own don't quite capture a fully realized LP.

Ye is definitely closer to a fully realized LP.
It's about 23 - 24 minutes?
If he would've added just a couple more verses to a couple songs
I think I'd be happy with the length of the album.

All Mine is the weakest link to me.
All Mine is terrible from the stupid hook to whatever you wanna call that trash beat.

I Thought About Killing You is pretty damn interesting to me.
Content wise. I think it's a good intro.

Yikes is good too. I like the hook. I like SOME of the lines.
I don't like all the bars on there, some are silly and stupid
which I've come to expect from him since well forever..
but especially since Yeezus.
I hate that Yeezy, Yeezy, Yeezy shit though.
Hated that flow on the jumpman, jumpman, jumpman joint.

.
the trump shit..
which definitely rubbed me the wrong way is fucked up. and I don't care to listen to what he says about that stuff,
don't follow him on twitter, mute a lot
of the keywords that deal with that..

If this is what his life has been like, I'm glad he spoke on it.
I wish he would've utilized some other emcees to help out in the writers room though.
I don't know if Nas knows anything about bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. He's around Wyoming though. 2Chainz!!
Some of the verses needed more depth. Some of the songs needed more verses. WISH he would've rapped more about what he was going through.
For himself, for others in the world that battle the bullshit.

The album should be IMPORTANT. It needs to be discussed.

I lost one of my best friends to bi polar schizophrenia
2 years ago. It's no joke. It can turn the most successful and happiest of people depressed.
It can take a person who doesn't have that much going on for them
and throw them into the deep end. You need meds to help you swim.
But the meds make you feel like they've zapped the life out of you.
So don't want to take them?

I can't imagine feeling like you're brothers,
you're best friends for 20 years, are government employees,
tapping your phones, bugging your home and you've never had any connection to the government, military, etc.

My boy took his life. The last few years were a fucking struggle.
He would help anyone in the world, it sUcks that the only person he couldn't help was himself.

Sorry, this reply took an unexpected turn. I"m still trying to process it 2 years later.
I miss him. Sorry. fuck.

Pablo had a number of songs that are on my all-time best of Kanye playlist (No More Parties, Waves, Ultralight Beam, Facts, Father Stretch My Hands).

These songs on here aren't bad. Again, only 1 listen so it's possible some will grow on me as upper-case DOPE, but after all the buildup, folks flying in and out of Wyoming, etc. this is a bit of a let down. Maybe after all these Kanye/Good Music EPs/short albums have been released it'll make more sense in the bigger picture.

the rest of this will be kinda forgettable, but THAT track could get major airplay if they try to push it.

Who was the lady singing on this?

I hate the way her voice sounds on the track, but can't get it out of my head. It's memorable like a childhood bout with whooping cough.

Don't think I'd wanna play that song in the house or in the car.

I don't think this project is terrible, I like the production for the most part, and some of the lyrics were quite personal, but for a 7 song album there weren't enough highs.

It's not worthy of comparison to his major projects, but I still kind of fuck with it on its own terms.

I actually find it very listenable in a raw/ragged "homespun charm" kind of way. I'm sure no one will agree with that, but whatever. (For the record I don't really fuck with MBDTF, have mixed/positive feelings on Yeezus and Pablo. Not really a huge Kanye devotee.)

Obviously this is not really ambitious or high-concept, which is unusual for him, but as a sub-half hour sketch with some of the most deceptively catchy shit kanye has released in a while, I'm not mad. (I've had chunks of almost each track stuck in my head at various times over the last few days.)

A misfire, but a somewhat interesting and listenable one.

I thought a lot of this sounded pretty good.

And after seeing how yall felt im trying to go back and hate it. at worst its ok.

I like Cudi on hear and the Shake chic sounds good too. the only thing I would have preferred is a verse from Pusha on here.

I dont claim to be an expert but a lot of people hated 808 when it came out and not its damn near called a classic.

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

To that point he was 3/3 in my eyes and coming off his best, most trimmed-down, focused, and consistent effort. Since 808s I've disliked most everything he's put out (I came around on MBDTF a few years after it came out).

Anyway I think maybe some people peg 808s as "classic" just based on the historical influence it had on hip-hop culture overall, for better or worse. I don't think it's classic in the ... well, classic sense of the word.

I like parts of this but not really any one whole song, maybe "yikes".

Cringe bars, lame hooks, Cudi singing lol, I thought that new woman singing was a boy, her track is good for being creepy/depressing.

Easier to listen to than Yeezus or TLOP but that might be due to how somber the whole joint is

I only like four of his albums up to this point.

3rd album in a row I don't fully care to listen to and the third to be paired with some bullshit. Seem like Yeezus was the rants, TLOP stirred up the ol' bs with vanilla mantis, and this one we get maga hats and fools getting butthurt over soundbite but that's nothing new.

cant knock him for why he made 808's and MBDTF was the comeback joint, but he need to get back to his album being the event and not all the games he pull to draw attention to em.

go watch my videos of him and Jay rapping on top of tessaracts

Ye reminds me of later on Marvin. Duh, he's a lesser vocal talent by any measure. But he's like Marvin in that he needs a real reason AND steady help. Left to his own devices, disaster awaits. The 3 hour Yeezus for instance. There was greatness hiding in the TLOP session but no reasonable party beyond Chance to make it have the album come out the way it should have. And now, this 7-song deal 'exposes' the sloppiness of Kanye at its worse..again.

And of course, Jay had No ID cussing him out and steering him into making his best album since American Gangster.

... was his ability to recognize where he needed collaboration in executing a vision. That's why Late Registration is his magnum opus. He realized he needed a right hand man (Jon Brion) to fully realize the vision he had for the orchestral feel of the production. And it paid off. He needs someone to focus him otherwise, as you said, he gets sloppy.
