"DJ Quik"

Some random thoughts on DJ Quik.

I decided to go back and revisit his catalog.

I wasn't aware of The Red Tape. This is pretty interesting. It's basically a parody record. So many problematic lyrics. I enjoy how playful the album is. Some pretty good rough beats and concepts in it. Seems like they were overflowing with ideas.

It reminds me off slick rick, the pharcyde, can i borrow a dollar and some late 90's cali backpack rap. It kind of feels to me like they were taking some angst of the west coast towards how rap was at the time and putting their spin on it while clowning it.

I've always enjoyed DJ Quiks beats and voice. I also like how he mostly kept things fun even if some of his lyrics would get so much blowback now-a-days.

I feel like a DJ Quik Black Milk collabo would be dope. Definitely during Quik's prime but possibly still now.

sadly though his last solo was kinda wack aside from a few joints.

All of the above. Those are his two classics and while I feel like the majority of folks prefer Rhythm to S&S, I tend to lean S&S but would have them about close to even.

His last album was mad disappointing. Especially coming off the strength of "Book of David" which I thought was DAMN good.

And it was about 50-50 as far as songs I really liked and those I didn’t care for as much. But the ones I did? SMH. So good. It basically went every other track for me. Blaqkout, Do You Know?, Oh, Hey Playa, and 9 X outta 10 all got a lot of play from me that summer.

Do You Know? Playing that in the car on a sunny, summer day. Amazing.

Two semi-recent Quik favorites on another artist's album were "Press Play" and "Those Gurlz" from Snoop's "Ego Trippin'".

Speaking of working with Snoop, I also loved Quik's beats on "Top Dogg".

I remember when I first heard it in the shadow of Quik is the Name, back in high school, and I was taken aback by how far he veered from the QitN sound. Way 2 Fonky ranks pretty low on my list of his discog, to this day. Not much I go back to from that one.

you must have became a Quik fan later on and not in the early years.

Way 2 Fonky was a big album when it dropped, you would hear it, AMG, 2nd II None, PPC and Hi-C all bumping out of car stereos back then. There really isn't many throw away tracks on the album and it was funky as hell. He was experimenting with a lot of sounds that Dre would later use on the Chronic, eg synthesizer melodies, live guitar, p-funk samples, etc. If you look at LA albums that came out the next few years, you can hear the influence of Way 2 Fonky.

In response to Reply # 57

probably all eyez on me is the first time i heard a quik beat and definitely the first time i knew it was a beat by quik. Rhythm-al-ism was my first quik album.

i can see the influence, like i said, the album took me back to a lot of the west coast stuff i was listening to back then. that would make sense if the album influenced the other music.

the skippable comment is from a perspective of someone that hasn't heard quik before right now. do you feel the music on the album is a must listen to someone new to quik?

i wont question the impact and influence the album had when it came out as i can't speak on that.

ill probably give all his albums another spin, i usually find at least one song i overlooked when i go back to albums.

To me this is the last really high quality Quik album and it almost NEVER gets talked about. Safe and Sound and Rhythmalism are classics no doubt but Balance and Options isn't far off. SO much heat on this album.....Change Da Game, Pitch in On a Party, I Don't Wanna Party with U, Sexuality, Do Wutchya Want, Do I Love Her?.....so much heat. As usual the production on this was top notch. I came back to this more than his "classic" albums to be honest. Under tha Influence after this one isn't too bad either but this is a criminally underrated album.

Those songs were my soundtrack my first trip to Vegas. I can hear both in my head now. So good.

Also tend to agree that B&O is underrated. At the time of its release it definitely paled in the shadow of S&S an Rhythm, but as time went on it carved out a space of its own in his catalogue.

It was shortly after Mausberg died and he was heavy into drinking and drugs and just wasn't doing well emotionally.

So I think it's less about the content of the album than it is about the fact that he just looks back on that period of his life and sees nothing good.

for right now its below safe + sound and above rhythmalism.

i liked the vibe of this a lot more than rhythmalism. i dont know if i had a bad source but there seemed to be a lot of noise one some songs that took away from them a bit. highlights Pitch in ona Party (might be my fav quik song if not number 2), How Come?, Well, The Divorce Song.

I did not expect the divorce song, some of the singing was kinda borderline and wouldnt be surprised if a lot of people dont like it. the way the bass and drums come in around 1:30 was awesome. doesnt seem like this song fits with this album but im happy it was on it.

more lows than rhythmalism but a lot more highs as well. not as consistent as safe + sound

fun album. a pretty good example of what i enjoy about quik.

lol at quikker said than dunn.

what is the connection with eazy-e? obviously the voice is similar. i see a lot of similarities in the humor as well. if quik's first mixtape came out in 87 is it reasonable that dr dre may have modeled eazy's sound around quik's? is it just a coincidence?

Okay, this was great. I thought I had listened to all his albums but obviously I only had some tracks.

This goes hard, only the overly sexualized lyrics hold it back some. The Ho in You is so good that I gotta get over the lyrics lol. If he had ended up with Summer Breeze I think it would be an undisputed classic.

After that either I was exhausted by the length or the rest of the tracks just weren't on the same level. Still good but not great. Everything up to/including Summer Breeze was great.

I kind of wish the intro and interlude weren't in it. Get at Me would be awesome way to start an album. I'm pretty sure this was peak intro/skits era in rap though.

I'm gonna break here for the day so I can get Rhythm-al-ism with fresh ears. It was my first Quik album but its been a long time since I heard it in its entirety.

it was pretty much 5/5's through summer breeze then 4's the rest of the way.

thats on one listen with headphones. could be one of those songs that i need to listen to in the car or just at the right time to get it. i think i was borderline on giving it a 4.5. probably 4.25 would be what i give it.

I'd be both happy and afraid to see him get some high-profile industry position, because I'm sure they would dig back into some of those lyrics and boot his ass outta there, in a way that they haven't done for Dr. Dre.

Let him become the exec. prod. for the Black Panther II soundtrack or some shit. "Industry legend David Blake" would become "'Sweet Black Pussy' gangsta rapper DJ Quik" faster than you can blink.

As I said before, this was my first DJ Quik album. I think I bought it cuz a friend had made a west coast mixtape for me and it had some quik stuff on it.

It had been a while since I listened to the whole thing. I have to say its pretty much what I remember. It felt like a lot of potential, a lot of big claims but didnt quite deliver as a whole. I gotta say Safe + Sound is easily way better than this. Hand in Hand might be my fav Quik song ever but the album didnt have many great songs to me.

I was hoping it would be as good as Safe + Sound and I would have to question why I didn't listen to it often.

He took a lot of risks on this album and it's such a departure from his previous sound that I understand it's jolting coming off of Safe & Sound and everything before it.

But man oh man - what a masterpiece.

polarizes ppl because of that. Many don't quite know how to define it perhaps idk. Plus the album cover is hard for many to get past (personally it never bothered me, I like risks, and the bright pink/blue color scheme is perfect)

i have some decent headphones - v-moda crossfade. pretty much any music i listen to with them i enjoy a lot more than i remember enjoying.

i'll give it another spin with my sennheisers as i do enjoy them even more. i was constantly interrupted while trying to listen to this album so i know that didnt help.

i am someone that loves when an artists takes chances and does something different, than what they are used to or whats expected from other artists.

i appreciated the headphone masterpiece, enjoyed the love below, phrenology, electric circus.

the fact that Quik claimed he was doing something different than most rap albums is part of what i liked. for some reason the execution didnt seem to be great to me. when i first heard it i remember wanting to like it more than i did. i wanted more stuff like it but that did it better.

to be clear, i think it is good but to me it does seem a step below safe + sound.

when i give it a second listen i will try to be more specific or hopefully come around and agree lol

Typically I prefer Safe & Sound as well but that's mostly due to my strong preference for the g-funk sound. But I think you'll find that with repeated listens, Rhythm-al-ism will reward the fuck out of you.

Think you said you've heard it before but I think going in now with the context of his previous works you'll grow with it. I know I did. I definitely had the same sort of "what the hell just happened" feeling the first few times I heard it haha.

it just didn't seem to be done as well as i hoped. i think the engineering and mastering is awesome but the music just seems to be missing something. doesn't quite groove as much as i hoped. it is consistently good, nothing bad in the album. could just not be for me.

definitely will give it more spins, i wanna see if i get it. even though i have heard it before i wouldnt be surprised if a lot of these songs this was the 3rd time i ever heard them.

i most likely placed the 3/4 songs i really liked on a playlist and didn't come back to any others before. some songs just need repeated listens to really click.

as a whole i dont think my opinion changed on it. i definitely was able to hear and appreciate a few more layers.

i still think it is a good album and what quik did was impressive but i just cant vibe with it. i think the sound he went for isnt for me. can't quite pinpoint it but it just doesnt work for me.

i listened to safe + sound after and i gotta say i still really enjoy that album a lot more than rhythmalism.

i can see why people like rhythmalism and i recognize that for a lot of people it is his best album but it just doesnt hit me like that. im going to try it in the car next.

layering, because it is so rich and lush

3) take a moment to appreciate all the various flows and cadences being experimented with, and consider that Quik is criminally never mentioned for his rapping skills, which imo took a quantum leap in this album...but other guys like Suga Free get into the act as well.

4) when you hear any given track, ask yourself how many other rap songs (or songs period) sound like this joint

5) next chance I get, I'm gonna try and provide a few notes for each track, I have been passionate about this album since it first came out lol (and I'm an EAST COAST head)

>layering, because it is so rich and lush

^^^ hell yes. This is my favorite and the most impressive part of repeated listens. There's so much to each instrumental. Which reminds me I've been meaning to buy an instrumental version of the album (if it even exists) for like 20 years haha.

I'm on team "Quik is underrated on the mic" myself but even I probably haven't paid enough attention to the flows on this album, despite having listened to it a trillion times. That's mostly a product of being so focused and blown away by the musicianship that it's hard to focus on anything else.

Yea.

i liked this. its a bit scattered but still sounds like Quik was having fun and being creative. maybe not everything worked but it was a good album and I will come back to many songs.

at this point safe + sound is no doubt the best album, way 2 fonky is the low point and the rest are on equal footing to me. need more listens of each to identify an order.

Highlights : Put it on Me (kinda weird having a dre produced track but i do really like it), Quik's Groove 6, Get tha Money, Sex Crymee

Trouble is borderline.

Im expecting the rest of the albums to be around way 2 fonky level. i've only heard balqkout before and there were some songs i liked on it.

You have to keep in mind this was recorded late 80's-early 90's and Quik and his crew were hella young. They weren't parodying the current West rap scene, they were doing what everyone else was - making dirty records to sell albums. Quik and his crew were all Too $hort fans and were imitating his dirty raps. The only people clowning west coast rap at that time were people from the east like Tim Dog, the rest of the country was all about gangsta rap.

A lot of the songs on there would later be remade on Quik and 2nd II None's first albums...

not taking themselves too serious but also clowning east coast rap. kind of, yeah we can do your style but were going to put some ridiculous lyrics in there. i probably should had worded it differently. i didnt mean to say it was actually a parody album, just that it gave me those types of vibes.

it reminded me a lot of blowfly which a lot of the west coast was influenced by and helps explain where the raunchiness of the lyrics come from.

i would say that you could tell they were going to do some great stuff based on the red tape. a lot of it was already there but just needed better mastering.

im kind of fascinated by early west coast stuff. the fact that too short has been doing it since 83 is crazy to me. I remember seeing album number 10 in 96 and being confused.

did he come out the gate with the same content as he's known for?

is there a documentary that covers early west coast rap? if you go by commercial stuff it seems like it came out of nowhere in 88 and took over by 91/92.

it seems your passionate about west coast stuff so i would appreciate if you could put me on to some early stuff.

okay, i would say this is his first bad album. its not horrible and does have some good tracks but its kind of a mess. im starting to see that the hooks on his tracks have a lot to do with how much i enjoy the songs.

his beats on this album are at minimum good and even great on some tracks. the hooks are mostly mediocre and some bad. some features aren't great and having such a mix i think took away from the potential.

this is almost like a compilation album but not quite.

the wyclef track is mostly booty and because of wyclef. most of the songs during parts with just quik are okay to good but quickly turn bad with the feature artist or the hook.

i was looking forward to hearing b-real with dj quik but i think b-real pretty much mailed it in. i think a cypress album with dj quik production could work but it may be too late.

Get Up could be a great track but the hook brings it down and the game doesnt add much to it. its still good.

im a bit bothered by how much i liked chingy on get down, i laughed when i saw him listed but he didnt sound bad. the song is actually kinda good.

i really like how TI sounds with DJ Quik, I want more of this. Indiscretions in the Back of the Limo was pretty good but not great.

Spur of the Moment (Pacific Coast Remix), I dont remember the original song but i really like this version, favorite track on the album. Ludacris sounds great with Quik.

Jet Set was pretty good and California could had used a better hook.

Definitely the low point so far but some songs I will go back to.

you have to respect quiks approach to making music. you can tell he really cares about it and takes it seriously. it would be nice if everything he made was a hit but its just reality that you will have some misses.

are there instrumental versions of his albums out there?

That song makes me close my eyes, smile, and just take in the strings. It's one of those joints that cements Quik as one of the greats.

In response to Reply # 102

first on poweramp but with no bass boost and flat EQ. I can make out more of the beat now but it still sounds like i guess its maxing out the bass on the headphones or something. a frequency the headphones cant handle???

i then listened to it on youtube to make sure its not just a bad mp3. sounded about the same.

listened to it again with poweramp with my default v profile EQ and bass boost. it somehow didnt sound crazy like the first time.

i think this needs to be listened to with speakers, probably then i will appreciate it for what it is.

i will report back lol

In response to Reply # 0

I really liked this. I was kind of shocked lol. I thought this was a very good album. I think Babylon is the only song i didnt like. RYM is acting up so couldn't rate this in halfs. Typically I only list songs that I think may be 5/5 as highlights, I leave the 4.5s out.

These are the songs I think are 4.5s or above
Do Today
Ghetto Rendezvous
Luv of My Life
Killer Dope
Real Woman (maybe fav song on here)
Hydromatic (maybe this one)
Nobody
Flow for Sale
So Compton

I didn't think I had heard this album before but I have definitely heard killer dope before. None of the other songs sound familiar.

Come to think of it ... wow ... this is the last CD I ever purchased. I buy vinyl and streaming now. That makes me kinda sad. Been like 7 years or whatever.

Anyway yea this album is fire all the way through. I think Babylon may be my weak spot as well.

I haven't listened front to back in a while cause I beat it to death for like a year or more after it was released, but I still regularly listen to "Do Today", and "Nobody".

This post just reminded me how much I always loved "Killer Dope" as well so I'm listening to it now. Thanks. Ha.

Yeah, this was pretty bad. There were many bad songs. Some ok/good songs.

Highlights:
That N Crazy
Puffin Tha Dragon
Pet Sematary
Fuck All Night

Towards the end it seemed to get better, started sounding more like a Quik album.

I would say for the most part quik seems to had been happy doing his own thing and his album sales may have suffered because he didnt chase a sound. Seems like he tried to go after a sound for most of this and it didnt work.

I really liked this. This was a really good album. You can just let it all rock. Good to see Quik still doing it at this level in 2017. Not very familiar with Problem.

Highlights:
A New Nite/Rosecrans Groove
Bad Azz (probably my fav)
Move Something
Rosecrans
Chachi's Ride
Straight to the City

I had never heard anything full length from Problem, so he was a bonus, because I'll buy anything from Quik, completely unheard.

I didn't know it could happen, but the full LP was even better, with Chachi's Ride, European Vacation, and the songs with Eiht.

I've been a Quik fan since Tonite, but I didn't get into this album until waaaayyy after the fact. It's fucking killer!

You should also listen to the stuff he did for other artists like 2nd II None, Mausberg, and especially Suga Free. Most people I've talked to like "Street Gospel" the best out of all Quik projects.

Happy listening!

Safe and Sound and rhythmlism was his peak and prime. for me 91-98 he was on point. Problem he wanted what dr dre had and couldn't bring it when the heat was on.

Sugga Free and him were on point however just like with second 11 none he just never could bring said acts to the finish line.

Quik was better a Producer and I dug his rapping however he wanted to be deeper at different points
and often he just got in his own way.

he wanted to be an R&B cat in the worst way and be all smooth with it and he was joggling both roles and ended up short changing both sides of the same coin.

i was more into Quik 20 years back and i dig the old stuff and his humor however he dropped the ball at bringing the best of said side acts. he missed the mark on a whole with El Debarge who obviously added style to his work on the ghost tip.

he is talented and also his own worst enemy.i ain't felt nothing he has done from 01 til now. he ain't really either, i did like Masenburg.

A Quik post with over 100 replies in 2018? Dude is one of my favorite producers of all-time. If you're a fan of music you can't even front on Quik Is the Name, Safe + Sound and Rhythm-al-ism. He rarely gets this much love here. Came a long way from this post http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=17&topic_id=119530&mesg_id=119530&listing_type=search

... was a "DJ Quik is underrated" post haha. Back in like 2008. Prior to that I lurked in The Lesson and GD but had only posted in OKArtist Discussion or whatever it was called.

After lurking here for a few years I finally posted and did the above-referenced DJ Quik post and a Blu & Exile post after having discovered the classic "Below the Heavens" via YouTube recommended-for-yous.

The first ~30 seconds of build up and the outro are amazing to listen to.

Not familiar with this label. I wish they had used the CD art for Safe + Sound instead of recreating the vinyl black sleeve with a sticker but oh well.

Looks like plenty of stores are selling these, I'm guessing they're shipping from UK so it will probably be a while before they come in.

VMP might be doing Safe + Sound next month...I would guess they would use the CD art but it's not even confirmed they are releasing it.

I am in the same camp. I posted on another thread a month ago, that I just started diving into his catalog after having ignored it for years.

He is dope.

The problem was I heard Chronic and Doggystyle first which made everything else I listened to sound kinda basic and definitely inferior.

Taking it an album at a time now though. I was on an Ice Cube fix for the last few weeks so it inspired me to give the rest of the west a dabble.

Quik is the only west coast producer whose music *doesn't* sound cheap or inferior relative to Chronic/Doggystyle/Death Row's reign, IMO. But I can understand why you'd move on after finding that nobody sounds as good as those guys, and not even getting to Quik.

I was into Hiero, Death Row, Pharcyde, Ras Kass, The B.U.M.S, Tha Liks, and others from the west coast, but somehow he never landed on my radar. It may have been something ridiculously superficial like the cover art (Jheri-curl, Pimp Hair) and I was absolutely judging a book by the cover when I was young and dumb.

Now, I am catching up on the things that I missed.

Peace

He's coming to town in one of our bigger venues, not a stadium but a theatre. Warren G, Mack 10, DJ Quik, The Dogg Pound, Amanda Perez and Kid Frost.

Honestly he's the only one I'm hyped about but it would be cool to see Kurupt, Warren and Kid Frost. Does DJ Quik use a live band? Is his live show any good? Tickets are $39 - $149 before fees. Not horrible but not cheap.

I think it's the only time I've seen him outside of an appearance here or there, so I don't have much to go off of.

I would like to have seen a Quik headlining set, personally. The full band, all that. He had SOME elements of it, and really seemed like he was one of the few artists on the bill trying to sell how important the day was to LA/rap music - he brought out 2nd II None, etc. He was REALLY trying to put on a show...rising to the moment, but it was just GOOD.

It was a fun set, albeit in the middle of the day and there was just a weird vibe in the air (Drakeo later got murdered...sooo...there was). In fact, Warren G, Mack 10, Dogg Pound and maybe Amanda Perez were also on the bill.

My recommendation - if you go to this show, it'll be fun. But you won't get full sets out of all these guys. I love the bills for these one day festivals/compilation type lineups but just know what you're getting out of it - 20 min sets, not the full stage shows, etc. It'll be fun, but Quik tours a lot - I wanna go see him solo, personally.
