L.A. Symphony, Beat Junkies, Tha Alkaholiks, Lateef & Asia/Lyrics Born, Blackalicious, Lootpack, The Physics, Lifesavas, Funkdoobiest, Cypress Hill...

As someone who lives in the west, G-Funk didn't really dominate, that was a mainstream thing. Or at least those of us who wanted something else would know where to go. Even with artists who may have dabbled with the G-Funk for a song and/or a remix, there was always another side that some felt was "too alternative" or "too backpacker-ish", code for "something different than what sold massively. Even whatever that was placed in the alternative rap/backpacker side, there was incredible diversity. There were many who worshipped "Summertime In The L.B.C.", which is fine but there were others who preferred "Only When I'm Drunk".

Race was a slight factor as well.

But even listening to rappers...most of them actually sound like the part of town they came from. When you mention Tha Liks, groups like Living Legends, Pharcyde...they were normally on the Westside, and usually weren't from Compton/South Central or the more hood areas. Those that did come from the hood and didn't go G-Funk usually went to HS outside of the city. G-Funk correlated with Gangstas, and they normally came from the areas that were highly infested with gangs.

Basically all of my friends, neighbors, and cousins were into the G-Funk sound the most, but they were also into regular commercial Rap more than anything that was seen as backpacker/underground back then.

I think that's where a lot of cats get it twisted tho gangster rap &
backpacker rap both come from the hood originally. Now who may have
took it over later is a different story. Like Hiero is from the same
Oakland as the pimp and gangster rappers of the bay. From my
observations, it just depended on personal taste not necessarily the
hood. The subject has been very interesting to me over the years cause
I was like them. Grew up in a murder capital but wasn't as into the
same music as most everyone else.

I never knew where Hiero was from, but makes sense.

I know a lot of the Project Blowed types were from the Leimert area, Mid City, and some of them did go to different schools that weren't in the hood...such as People under the stairs going to Loyola, Murs going to the valley and Hamilton, along with the rest of the LL crew, Black Eyed Peas being at Palisades, and especially the younger wave such as LAUSD/Dom who went to those Westside schools.

The majority of kids who grew up rapping in the 90's and went to the hood schools naturally adopted to G-Funk, same way most young ATL rappers now adapt to Trap. It almost takes a special breed to go a different direction...and for L.A., a lot of them were successful compared to how the non-Trap ATL rappers seem to have zero luck in this era.

It's always a small few from the hood that go left but a make a BIG
impact. Like David Banner started off "Backpacker". Oakland always
reminded me of my hometown because we would have backpack rappers
right beside the gangster rappers and they went to the same high
school. And on ATL, I think alternative rap not get shine there is one
of the biggest tragedies in modern music history. Especially since
their dominance was started by arguably the greatest alt-rap group of
all time lol. And I totally get the special breed thing. In the south
it was the same, you had to completely not give a fxck to go away from
the norm. And there were no payoffs for it cause the labels weren't
there nor media.

He collaborated with Snoop and Daz and had songs that maybe could be classified as g-funk buy generally he had his own harder funk sound that I don't consider the same as the typical g-funk sound.

But the WC and the Maad Circle album Ain't A Damn Thing Changed is fantastic. Hard beats, storytelling and WC brings it. An under appreciated West Coast classic for me. Dress Code was the standout, along with Out on a Furlough and You Don't Work You Don't Eat.

I know they became whitey favorites around 93 and primarily started to appeal to rock-fans of the more questionable variety but still... COME ON!!! First record was massive, they were sampled by *east-coast* acts like EPMD and Redman, they shared crucial samples with De La and Tribe, they were about as "cool" and trendsetting with a cross-coastal appeal as it got for a few years before "Insane in the brain"...

Seriously, I feel this acts and Muggs productions importance to early 90's rap has been dismissed just because of the audience they appealed to later and frankly, I think that is lame, if I were like that, I could NEVER like Slayer (LOTS of nazi-fans in spite of classic line-up being 50% first generation hispanic immigrants), Merle haggard, even AC/DC actually...

Alternatively, people just don't dig/dug them which is fair, I just think it's strange because that first record was MASSIVE amongst "heads" back in the day, whatever...

Anyway:

Cypress hill
Pharcyde
Alkaholiks (my favorites overall)
Saafir on his debut
Aceyalone etc.
