"Where does Pharrell rank amonst the greatest producers of all time?"

I never see him mentioned in greatest of all time discussions, and I think it's because he's not a sample based producer. But he has many classic records, is a hitmaker, at least two classic albums under his belt (HHNF, ISO), is a a songwriter, and has been around for almost two decades now.

Where do you place him in the GOAT canon?

it's because his work as a Hip Hop producer isn't necessary and timeless as those most would put ahead of him. If not sampling was the case, Larry Smith wouldn't be in the comversation either and he was a better producer than Pharrell-and has a better Hip Hop discography.

Most of his best work is with Chad and he had a run where he let labels dictate that he and Chad provide a wave of soundalike beats.

The breath of his working is staggering. From his beginnings working on Rump Shaker till his latest work with Dornik and Snoop. He is truly one of the G.O.A.T. Not only working with rappers but with vocalists as well. Only cats such as Timbaland and Missy have done that.

He started out left of center with his quirky tracks with Kelis and then did more conventional work using N.E.R.D. as an outlet for his alternative but what happened is that music moved to him and his "out there" sound became the norm.

...mainly because he exists in the house that the legends built.

Even though his success and impact has arguably been just as big if not greater than, say, a Pete Rock or Premo, most people who would consider all of them in the conversation are going to view the architects with more respect...if only because they are pioneers in a greater sense than anyone who followed them ever could be.

I also think that part of it may be the fact that the longest stretch of his most prominent hot streak was sharing the credit with Chad. Sort of like how people will discount Andre 3k because he's part of a duo.

And finally, though Pharrell/The Neptunes have had several undeniable records/smashes/game-changers, they also put out a lot of baaaaaaaad shit in their heyday. I don't hold that against him in the discussion, but this might possibly be the source of any bias people have towards him, even on a subconscious level.

and I agree with you and some of the other posters above in that I don't think he belong on any mount rushmore type lists, but he definitely innovated and made a huge impact within the already established hip hop culture (as you also stated).

what i'm looking for is where exactly does he belong in the pantheon? top 10? top 20?

There's a lot of other prods I'd rank higher. I'm not saying they're "Better", but impact on the genre and overall quality of their general output? I'd rank these dudes higher:

Hank Shocklee/The Bomb Squad
Pete Rock
Marley Marl
Diamond D
DJ Premier
RZA
Rick Rubin
Larry Smith
The Beatnuts
Q-Tip
Organized Noize

...doesn't mean you can be so snarky without giving it some thought, I know so many dope songs by producers we haven't heard from in years verses Pharrell's vast catalog that worked against him for so many years; but he still got some heat too but not much of it to have him ranked high.

(even though ironically enough his beats knocked in a clearly boom bapped influenced way).

At at time when 'real' hip-hop was dying.

There was plenty of Neptunes hate on the board at that time until their N.E.R.D project, and even afterwards it was 50/50.

But looking at the sheer amount of tracks and the general quality of them...there's no reason why Pharell can't be in the rafters even if Chad did half the lifting.

I am more "casual" than most about a lot of music post 90's

but...

I know MY Pharrell/Neptunes playlist is INSANE

ahem

(and yes, they are prioritzed from "most impressive" listed first)

(and yes, I tried to avoid what was on the other first list posted but I do think these are much better than the few ones I am aware of on that first list posted - I told y'all I ain't up on a lot of post 90's music)

Kelis - Sugar honey Iced tea
N.E.R.D. - God bless us all
N.E.R.D. - Chariot of fire
N.E.R.D. - Hypnotize you
N.E.R.D. - yeah you
N.E.R.D. - sooner or later
Kelis - Flashback
Beanie Man (feat. Mya) - Girls dem suga
SWV - use your heart
Kelis - Protect my heart
Snoop (feat. Pharrell) - Let's get blown
Jennifer Hudson (feat. T.I.) - I can't describe

I like all the ones I've listed far more than then what they did on most of the early Kelis albums (which sounds pretty bad to me) or most of their other stuff in general. The ones I've listed are VERY impressive to me.

But I think he's in the top 20.

A quick list of producers I think are better or would be considered better by a majority heads:

Q-Tip
Dre
RZA
Premier
Bomb Squad
Marley Marl
Prince Paul
Pete Rock
Kanye West
The Fugees
Dilla
Timbaland
Larry Smith

I think Pharrell falls somewhere around 11 - 15. Like others have mentioned he has his own signature sound and while he doesn't have many solo projects that he oversaw that are thought of as classic, he's a hit maker on the level that few in hip-hop have ever reached.

AND he's also dabbled in other genres and had a lot of success there which speaks to his versatility and ability to reach a large set of fans with his work.

I personally don't think the fact that he worked with Chad is knock against him. Most if not all of the producers above him had folks who worked along their side to shape their sound or serve as a muse, so I don't see why Pharrell should be faulted for simply using other ears in the kitchen so to speak.
