Basically, those four emcees that you check for above everyone else, or if they aren't still releasing material, you would still rather listen to than anyone else. for me,
Nas Rakim Black Thought Kendrick Lamar
and just to be clear, i still think Scarface, KRS, and Jay Z have a better overall discography than Kendrick, but i'm a slightly bigger fan of Kendrick at this point in time.

I tend not to make these kinda list mainly because the old heads will get passed regardless.
I have my favorites, inluding those you listed. as much I did Kane, the fall off was too steep. I bet he could make some dopeness today and I'd be one of the 5 that buy it.

Rakim - the father of basically all the great's style after his. Nas - the greatest of all time. Jay-Z - influence has spanned two decades, crossover appeal + undeniable skill. Kendrick - the undisputed king/best rapper of the new generation.

I'm glad you said Aesop, because although he isn't everyone's cup of tea, and I understand that, The Impossible Kid is actually one of my favorite hip hop albums ever probably (yes I know it just came out, yes I know I should give it time, but that's just how I feel right now) and after the release of that, combined with Labor Days, Skelethon and None Shall Pass, he is earned his way into my "conversation".
Also Rae/Ghost are up there for me too, but I don't have to explain why lol

That album is amazing and probably my favorite last year which is saying something because it was a pretty good year for Hip-Hop imo.
When you look at those four albums, Labor Days, None Shall Pass, Skelethon, and The Impossible Kid, there are not many MCs with that many albums at that high of quality.
And yes, he isn't everyone's cup of tea but he is completely original and no one ever has matched his lyricism. The shit he writes and the way he goes about topics is unparalleled to me.
Who makes a dope song about their cat?
I was never the biggest Ghost fan but Rae is up there for me. Every time I hear a dope beat, like a crazy beat that gives me the screw face, I think "Rae would sound dope on this."
