"Joey Badass - All American Badass"

If you're a fan of the kid..
IF a fan of the debut album, might be surprised by the growth.
If thought debut could've cut some fat (maybe 3-4 songs)
you'll be happy with the all killer no filler treatment.

It's fantastic man.
Joey keeps getting better as a lyricist.
He's playing with some melodies on hooks.

Stepped away from the golden era sound.

Told my buddy a lot of the albums sounds like something
I'd enjoy on a cross country road trip.
There's some rider music on here.
Some more fleshed out songs, musically.

My buddy then sends me the album cover artwork lol..
Joey was thinking same thing with the cross country road trip.

Best album of the year so far.
Badass isn't going anywhere.

OH... and the joint with Styles?? FIRRRE.

However, I found the beats on the first half of the album, pretty conventional and kind of blah. And the hooks were pretty bland too. I get what he's trying to do and if he's moving away from the golden age sound that's also fine, but I wish the execution on the musical side was better.

Second half of the album is stronger. And I do like that he's getting political and introspective.

I've gotta give this some more spins before I really form an opinion, but so far I think it's good. Not sure if I like it more than B4da$$, but time will tell.

because Before The Money is Joey doing HIS thing
with a tip of the cap to a certain sound / era...

Though no denying the aesthetic was part of his initial appeal
and a particular set of fans that like Before The Money
like it a lot because it reminds them of the so called golden era.

Devasted lol. The youtube comment section had me rollin lol.

And I feel them, they didn't want something from him that they know
they could get from anybody. They wanted him to stay unique.

He's still unique on this album, but not as distinct.

I liked it better on first skim thru. Then I listened to the whole
thing on my workout like I usually do with artists I'm anticipating
and while good didn't hit me like the first album. I dunno if it was the hunger factor being less or less cohesiveness on beats or what.

The first half is a little weak, but taking off a few songs makes it a much better experience. The back half is very exciting music.

My enjoyment increases later into the album but when it restarts a get hit with a new wave of disappointment with the first 5 or so songs.

I like Summer Knights more than 1999, B4.Da.$$ was cool but I don't feel like I played it enough to have a strong opinion.

if it's more like Summer I'll probably dig it.

He said the bootleg was cut from vinyl so what most people have heard up until today probably sounds like ass, idk, but he has repeat customer talent.

I'll listen a few time more this weekend - but the music is not what I was expecting - and sometimes his choruses repeat too much.

Still going back to Hillary $wank - it's the MF Doom I was waiting for:

I wasn't expecting this and am kinda puzzled by how
he pulled this off.

This is some superbly feel good, uplifting but also
good and authentic hip hop shit.

Wow.

This dude is youthful and goofy, and still mature and stoic.

It's messagey and not preachy. It's serious/grim and
positive.

And the MUSIC is GOOD.

I see what Joey was going for on the first half and I think he succeeded because the content is there. There's a lot of heart in this album and Y U Don't Love Me is probably tied with Rockabye Baby for my favorite jam on the album. A great 1,2 punch. I hope he continues to be successful on his own terms. I just want CJ Fly to get his shine as well. That brother has charisma.

Don't know what happened when I first checked this album out, but I just let it play all day today in the background while doing some spring cleaning and I really started getting into it.

I never made it past Devastated when I first listened to it a few times, but damn the second half of this album crazy dope! The whole thing together is such a cohesive piece of work. I'll be playing this for a while. Hope he has much success with this album, he deserves it.

Joey is official. I didn't like this album first run. Stuck with it, it clicked, ran it for a week straight in the whip.

Joey went in another direction with the sound, without losing any of the heart or feeling of his other releases. And he's gotten better as an emcee, despite being well above average.

Dude probably has a higher ceiling than any of his peers, and that's saying a lot.

38. "This album is greatness"
In response to Reply # 0

I didn't love the last one like a lot of people. I liked it but I thought some of it sounded poorly mixed and the quality and dynamics of the songs from beats to lyrics were up and down for me. Then he ended with that Teach Me joint which I fucking hate so I never went back to it outside of the Primo joint.

But this shit...man...cohesive, focused, positive message while addressing negativity, production very well arranged from top to bottom, features are all on point, songs have great movement from one to the next and the cohesiveness of the sound never seems stagnant, Joey challenged himself on the hooks and killed it!

What is here not to like here?

I need stay off the internet for music opinions because I lose sight that I'm discussion this shit with people growing potatos in Idaho or some shit.

Much better album than you know what...

I like how he's become more topical as far as subject matter goes, but beat-wise Kendrick, Freddie Gibbs, Homeboy Sandman, Droog, Rae, Kweli/Styles P, and Roc Marc are more my speed right now.

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

High highs imo

2015 was pretty good as well.

2013 and 2014 were pretty light.

2012 was a monster of a year. Best since 2000 imo.

Started with his debut album and then moved right into this one. I’m four songs in and have to say that I’m impressed by this cat. It’s refreshing to see that there are more than a few youngins out there who are actually concerned with contributing good relistenable music to the culture. I can understand the hype behind the young brother now.

Hopefully, he continues working and evolving in this way.

He's been fairly quiet since. Dropped a few things, but nothing of note imo. This album and the few before it are all gems.
