Sounds to me like you're still stuck in 2014.

I can see in the beginning that people would compare but if you took your head out your ass for a second and actually listened to the album you'd realize that from a conceptual stand point, writing, production, pretty much everything he's starting to mold into something special.

But hey, do your thing.

With his first project, the Nas comparison was always the elephant in the room. But three years later, he's released a few other projects, made a few guest appearances, released a handful of loosey tracks that have showed his style/lyrics have, at least to my ears, progressed beyond him "sounding like Nas."

He rhymes about different things, rhymes over different beats, and his voice has become distinctive enough that when I hear a new Y.O.D. track, the first things that comes to mind isn't "This guy sound like Nas." They're separate animals in my mind at this point.

Not much more I can say.

DON'T be one of these miserable sacks of shit that says

talks."

Just heard his recent stuff: nope. Still sounds like Nas.

But I'll give it a try! I really will!

I'd prefer to give my money and attention to artists who didn't
build their whole gettup on biting, but I'm not a hater and
will try.

Originality is all that we have in this artform, though

No, he definitely sounded like Nas on the first EP. It didn't bother me as much, because I liked the music. Just about all of my favorite MCs came in this game sounding like their influences.

I'll just say don't be one of those guys who listens to an album looking for a reason not to like it. Because if you go into it looking for a reason to hate, there's a very strong chance you'll find one.

You sure putting in work.

Just own it, dogg.

You're cool with the obvious biting because you like how it sounds.

You like the end result, so you're in here with like 5+ post for an artist you "don't love like that" ...?

They're both on the album, but they're not the same person. I've seen separate credits for E. Dan, and it's not Edan Portnoy.

E. Dan produced GKAC. Edan Portnoy does Help and You Can Do It.

saying "get your ears checked" or even "well, it's not as bad as it was" (as if that somehow is a pass)

The "well, he doesn't bite as hard as he used to" must be a compliment reserved for white rappers only.

unreal.

This dude sounds like Nas because he TRIES to.

Action sounds like Face because he TRIES to.

In each case, it has even been used as marketing tool for the artist.

If it wasn't for the "is this Nas??" campaign no one would even know who the f*ck Droog is.

If only Guerilla Blak and the Realest or whatever would have been white, they'd have been H U G E.

and that action bronson sounds like ghostface?

and that having vocal similarities to someone in the 2010s is literally the worst thing any rapper can do?

and that in the 90s, back when hip hop was real, no one ever sounded like anyone else in any capacity because that was biting and not biting is the #1 rule of making hip hop? never mind the fact that every artist ever starts out mimicking their idols and then if they're good they put their spin on it, eventually differentiating themselves from the artist that inspired them. the most important fact here is that droog liked nas and made an ep early in his career where he kind of sounded like nas and how he's forever branded as the worst person imaginable: a biter

Slick Rick

the rules been in place and applied fairly since the jump street.

no luv for copycat emcees. how many clown nxggas came out with the "iggity" style when Das Efx dropped? so many, that Das had to switch they style with the quickness. none of those biters ever made noise...i couldn't even name most of them. there are mad examples... Run DMC fell off when they started dressing like Onyx, lol. Mic Geronimo disappeared when he started trying to bite the Bad Boy steez. it goes on and on.

oddly, the same can't be said for beats, but i'll leave that for another conversation.

Just like how someone who is into fashion can spot a knockoff bag easily, but a casual clothes wearer(not sure of the term) would not be able to discern the difference. That is why there is a market for fake bags.

My question to us hip hop heads is, what does it say if even the discerning customer cosigns knockoffs. I'm not even making a judgement just a question.

I'm not hearing anybody saying he doesn't sound like Nas. Just stop, we will never see eye to eye.

However, the music is pretty dope. I feel wrong listening to it though. Are we legit okay with biting?

Another question. If Your Old Droog isn't biting what IS biting? what would be too far. Honestly if you don't think Your Old Droog is a biter/copycat/knockoff I don't see how you can call anything biting.

The dude definitely sounds like Nas but to me most of that is in his voice and tone.

Lyrically he isn't on the same level and they have different phrasing and write from different perspectives.

Are we saying he's a biter for how his voice sounds? Is he purposefully imitating Nas' voice?

Edit: let me be clear that I can't rock with him either and from day one knew that it wasn't Nas. So I'm not trying to stick up for him but I don't think we should tell him not to rap *if* his voice naturally sounds similar to Nas.

I would say that biting is colts by someone's flow, their actual lyrics, their concepts, their image, etc.

And yes, you can bite someone's voice if you are intentionally making yours sound the same but if you naturally sound like another rapper because that's how God made your voice, is it fair to call them a biter?

I think "I Gave You Power" is one of Nas' most-overrated songs.

I mean... how do you mean by making him sound like Nas voice-wise? How do you even fake a voice? I understand from a studio perspective if you never show your face outside the studio.

But looking at this for instance, hearing him talk, hearing him spit, what is he supposed to do to alter his voice?

Look at Jaime Foxx doing John Legend.

If someone came out actually trying to imitate someone's entire style like that...that would be biting.

I feel that's different than if your voice just happens to sound similar because that's the way God created you.

I saw a B-Real interview where he said everyone thought he was wack in the beginning and the rest of the group made him change his voice to what you hear now.

It just happens to be HIS style so that's ok. But if you listen to him talk you can clearly tell he puts on his rapping voice in the booth.

You're in here acting like there's no resemblence.

I agree that it's a fine line with the "biter" title when their natural voices sound like the legends. We've seen this before with Shine and that other Biggie sound alike. There was also a Jay sound alike if I'm not mistaking.

Those dudes got clowned but for some reason these guys don't. Are they just better rappers?

I fully understand not wanting to listen to an MC that sounds very much like another MC, let alone a legend because it just comes off as wack regardless if the music is good or not.

I'm not going to flat out call them a biter if they can't help it but they can't be mad if people don't rock with them cuz...thems the brakes.

what i did say is cats act like:

1. their ears are so clogged that they can't distinguish between them

2. that because their voices sound how they sound that they should take on some kind of fake voice so that comparisons can't be made.

if you don't like it don't listen. shit, i don't even listen to these dudes outside of a song or two, but i can recognize when Nas is rapping vs. when Droog is rapping. i'll say that if you think they sound alike then you need to listen harder or that maybe you don't REALLY know what Nas sounds like because they may have a similar vocal tone but they don't rap alike.

do droog's raps rhythmically line up with nas' in such a way that they are too similar for your liking, beyond the general 90s NYC flow that many rappers still use? does droog use the same inflections that nas does, in the same places in the meter? does droog have that nas swing?

He changes his shit up a lot but it's subtle.

Droog's flow is like one that Nas has used in the past but to me that's some NYC shit. It's really the voice that makes them sound similar.

But as I said, pronunciation is vey different on many words.

in fact, Pun acknowledged many times that G was one of his main influences
which is something biters never do
in fact, they always go the opposite

His shit got real mishandled by the label with that "I Love College" and "Lark on My Go-Kart" shit, he got on because he was probably the only raw frat boy rapper ever and if the internet had been more of a thing they'd have probably let him take the Lonely Island/whatever that Penn State dude from last year's name is lane instead of try to make him a pop star. He was pretty open about thinking rap was pretty silly as a profession which is a far cry from early, or late, Eminem.

Seared Foie Gras and his two EPs with Nottz were solid in parts.

My apologies Patrik, but I have to ask since the discussions here have some interest to me, so I have another question for you folks here. For the people here that dislike Droog for being a biter, how do you feel when established non-biter artists co-sign and even work with Droog? I suppose the same question can be asked regarding Action Bronson since his name has been mentioned in this thread and folks have thrown that accusation at him as well.

Just interesting to me to see artists (who I assume that the craft of rapping very seriously) co-sign and even want to work with folks that bite or close very close to the borderline of biting, which was a sin 15-20 years ago.

Just like Guerilla Black. Just like the Realest.

The only differences are-

1. Nas isn't dead.

2. Droog is white.

If it wasn't for the "is this Nas??" fiasco no one would even know this clown.

How is that ok with these dudes? Crazy.

Shit...Bronson got more Ghost-like.

YOD is "wordier" than Nas but the DNA is all over him.

he has Nas' cadence and delivery but his vocal tone is octaves deeper, so it's not quite the same to me

you want to hear biting? Listen to this dude's Kendrick impersonation https://soundcloud.com/jayprincemusic/monologue-feat-arima-ederra

99. "diss on "Rapman"?"
In response to Reply # 0

The irony of this would be that off the top of my head Nas and Cole are the only rappers I can name who made tribute songs to other rappers, so it would be funny if he was dissing Cole for looking up to the guy he's accused of biting.

I just wonder who that “Yo I’m sick of sycophants who want to make their idols proud” line is for, cuz most of these young guys are shitting on older rappers, people like Big Sean, Kendrick, Drake kind of.

I don't know, I get the line but I just wonder who can actually be applied to.

However, he did talk about defeating "Lex Lyor." That's not very subtle.

Question for Nah's fans:

does Nas have a song touching 'You Can Do It! (Give up)'? in 15 years?

Be REALLY honest.

maybe 'we're not alone'. that was blassic.

well, personally, I like nearly every song on Life Is Good better, obviously not Summer on Smash, but Locamotive, Stay, Where is the Love to name a few.

This song is not bad tho, I enjoyed it but its not memorable at all.

Droog's career will be gone in 5 years and Nas will still be the GOAT and it must hurt you somehow...

I didn't listen to him when he was first breaking cause I didn't like his name but he sounds like any random dude that had their album shelved in 1995 to me.

If anything I'd take a combination of Edan and Sean Price, though maybe that's just the sound of the album mixed with the sense of humor
