"Christión's Ghetto Cyrano & other overlooked r&b/soul albums"

THIS AIN'T A CLASSIC ALBUM THREAD.

*clears throat*

Back in 2015, I came across Christion's Ghetto Cyrano in the bargain bin at Hyde Park Music in Chicago.

I played that joint on my drive back to Detroit and my mind was blown.

I was familiar with Christión vaguely because of "Your Love" (Remix) featuring Jay-Z from the Streets is Watching soundtrack but I didn't know much about them.

This rediscovery of sorts made me curious about other overlooked R&B/Soul albums that I might enjoy.

Give me some albums and name 3-5 joints I must listened to. I'm particularly interested in albums with little-to-no Billboard success.

Basically, don't state obvious shit or shit only casual R&B fans would list.

Albums can be from any era.

Let me start:

Christión's Ghetto Cyrano (1997)
- Full of Smoke
- Pull It
- I Wanna Get Next to You (a superb Rose Royce cover)
- Tonight (A Top 3 favorite of mine from this album)

Intro - Intro (1993)
- Ecstasy of Love (My favorite and a CD Bonus Track)
- Anything For You
- Don't Leave Me
- So Many Reasons
*Side note: "Come Inside" is my least favorite despite its popularity. In fact, it 's not a favorite. Phonte sang an excerpt on the outro of the "Written All Over Your Face"Rude Boys cover on Zo! and Tigallo Love the 80's. The remix is better.
Oh, and may Kenny Greene rest in peace.

And it's not an album cut, but the "Ribbon in the Remix" version of "Ribbon in the Sky" is the jam. I love how the vocal arrangement borrows from the Clark Sisters, "You Brought the Sunshine." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucXLVUgTwuA

Darien Brockington - Somebody To Love (2006)
- Don’t Say Goodbye
- Got What You Want
- Come On Over
- I Need You

Honorable mention goes to Eric Benet's A Day in the Life (1999), though it had more commercial success than those listed above.

i'm a huge dungeon family & co. fan, though, so i might be biased. it was released the same year as ATLiens (my favorite Kast album) and it feels like a more fleshed-out extension of the Organized Noize production contributions on the album.

Favorite tracks: EMBRACE, Blac Mermaid, It Only Gets Better, Peaces N Erb

I had the cassette, but it like the rest of my cassette singles have gone the way of the dodo. E.M.B.R.A.C.E. pt. 2 with Big Rube is so dope...but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

I know there must have been more "under the radar" R&B albums that were played on the Rock floor at Tower Records when I worked there from 97 to 99, but this is the only one that I really somewhat remember (and I only really remember 1 track but the others seem to be mostly quality upon hearing them on youtube now).

In these types of threads Rachid's Prototype always comes to mind --- sort of the musical eclectic-ism and lyrical quirkiness of TTD with nods to late-90s trends like drum n bass (without ever getting lost in them -- a lot like Esthero).

My favorite stretch of the album is from "One to Destroy Me" on --- it's a streak of great arrangements, great writing, great execution. Zoe's World should've been a Prince song. From earlier in the album, Sweet Charity is phenomenal, Evil is creepy... but really, the whole album still sounds great to me.

Then he just faded away.

dude without musical boundaries.
Pride was a great song, but didn't fit on
R&B stations and his voice was too soulful
and obviously Black for racist ass rock stations.

from the first track really
His singing is just top notch.
The instrumentation and composition are great.
His subject matter is very interesting and
thoughtful.
I really can't name a bad track on it.
It's one of my all-time favorites.

I thought about this album when I made this post but I didn't mention it because I haven't listened to it thoroughly.

Funny thing is, I found out about it a few years ago through DJ Brainchild's Twitter timeline and I own the CD.

What are the top 3-5 tracks?

Charade
Pride
And The Angel Comes For Me

Man, I still play songs from this on a playlist that I play at work every day! Pride , and When the Angel Comes are the songs on the playlist, but I love most of that album. Shame he didn't make any more

In response to Reply # 0

this is another one track I remember from Tower Records (though the track I remember is a Black Rock song - that's why I remember it - heh heh)

Kelli Sae used to be involved with the NYC Black Rock scene in the early 90's (MackMike probably remembers exactly how more than I can) but it seems her biggest claim to fame was singing for the band Incognito.

Anyway, because I liked the Black Rock track on this album when I heard it at Tower and I know Kelli Sae has a pretty good rep, I know the rest of this album is quality R&B.

I always have to give this album mention

Cloud 9 **
Big Black Buck
Wildlife
Rocketship **
Heaven Sent **
The Colored Section (final track) **

If you only listen to 4, listen to the ones
with the asterisks beside them.
The 2 without the asterisks of two of the
deepest, most thoughtful R&B songs ever made tho.

I know he's OKP's own, but I don't remember
much talk about this album at all, despite
how great it is.
When people say Black people aren't making
soul music anymore, this is one of the albums
I point to to disprove that notion. We just
don't accolades for it. The industry has
just obviously decided what complexion of
people they will market soul music from with
live instruments, no cursing, etc.

Top tracks imo:

'Till I Met Thee
Everybody's Brother
Don't Wanna Go The Other Way
Chips Down (In No Landfill)
Where Is All The Money Going
Scroll Call

Just my favorites. Every song on the album
is great.

I remember the "Ooh Wee Wee" video that used to play on BET. I don't recall being impressed with the album, but to be fair, I didn't give it a good listen. I'm willing to give I Love You, Me another try, though.

I liked "I Swear," from her shelved album/sophomore effort, Soul Parade. 107.5 WGPR in Detroit, back when they had a different format, used to play that joint a lot.

I remember copping this at Media Play (R.I.P.) for the cheap as a teen. I really liked the first track, "Prophecy Of A Flower" at the time. Couldn't get into the whole album, though. It wasn't bad; it just didn't have a lot of replay value to me.

I started the thread and my recommendations don't fall under the "curly/wavy haired female artist" stereotype. I'm a black woman, by the way.

On second thought, this comment made think about how a lot of the underground/indie/so-called "neo soul" I liked as a teen circa 2000-2002, was really average or not that good despite what I thought at the time.

"A Poem About Ms. Doss" comes to mind.

I do think people tend to think "not mainstream" or widely ignored music is inherently better than what garners commercial success.

but my elitist scenester phase started in the late 90's.
I was listening to a lot of underground rappity rap, with some power to the people poetry & neo soul mixed in.
A lot of the stuff I was listening to then, does nothing for me now.

this was a fantastic album that got lost in the glut of quality albums coming out at the time, the dreaded little-to-no-push from the label, and the lumping of almost everything into "neo-soul"

so, like Rachid, I thought it had found it's audience (though I know she should have been bigger due to the quality of the album).

So, in light of this recommendation, I'll just have to mention my reply #38 album

I'm assuming you're referring to N'Dea's debut?

I thought it was a solid album and it starts off very strong. I think "No Never Again" was was my least favorite, and I think it starts to go downhill from there, although I did like "Bullshittin'."

I'm not a music critic so it's hard for me talk about music in a sophisticated way. Simply, the latter half of the album didn't have a lot of replay value, or it wasn't as compelling as the first few tracks.

Maybe it was the production?

I've been re-listening since yesterday and the album is better than what I remember.

"No Never Again" has a House vibe to it, and I actually like House music.

Great recommendation! I'm about to add this joint to my iPhone right now. I remember Lalah Hathaway cosigning this album (or maybe it was UK Black?) on Twitter.

I know it's on UK Blak, but I don't think it ever got a domestic release on this side of the pond.

It's cool, but like a lot of the albums in this thread, doesn't have a whole lot of replay value.

I confess I didn't know about them until Jon B.'s TV One Unsung episode.

It appears they finished an album but it was never released, no?

Mackmike didn't get in here yet, I see, heh heh

Many of you know Sandra had a big hit with The Family Stand ("ghetto heaven") they were a Black Rock Coalition affiliated band, so I thought Mackmike would have mentioned her before me.

I know someone here loves The Family Stand's album without Sandra ("Connected")

anyway, this album "Mack diva saves the world" didn't seem to make much noise.

This thread had me going through the collection earlier this week. Popped in the Christion CD. Played a little bit of the D. Brock. Checked through the Caron Wheeler. And none of them are truly bad records. They just didn't stand out much from the pack. The Christion in particular has some really good songs on it, but I listened to it, and threw it back in the CD stand.

And I don't want to get it confused. That's not a diss at all. It's just that the market was really flooded in the 90s when a lot of these albums were dropping.

That's a fair assessment, and it's one reason why I said this wasn't a classic album post. I was just curious about solid albums that weren't as popular as The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, etc.

Did any albums in this thread strike you as remarkable?

I'm a huge fan of the Adriana Evans self-titled record. El Camino and Nomadic as well. I love Res' "How I Do", but we've talked about it ad nauseam.

Davina's record was pretty good too.

But, I think the true gems aren't in the albums themselves, but the singles.

For instance, Angel Grant's "Lil' Red Boat (Gizmo's Groove) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dGgzHCwGvQ is so dope. It wasn't on the record though. The same for Portrait's Honey Dip. The Swazz Mix is one of my favorite songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdJPwAVuGSQ The album is pretty forgettable though. Solo's self titled falls in the same boat.

I wish I could add more songs. The worse part of this thread is remembering these albums. Everytime I read it, it keep remembering all those CDs. But, none of them have made much of an impact on me as complete albums.

I certainly don't have a large CD collection myself.

And if you have been listening, what youtube clips did you click on in this post (before I asked this question)?

The albums aren't memorable. I don't even remember having them until someone else brings them up.

You'd be so wrong. Like I stated, there's some good stuff in here. the Joi album, as well as the second Intro CD. I remember the Pru and the Cherokee albums from way back, and being unimpressed.

Now that I think about it, I have 3 copies of the Society of Soul album.

People in the Lesson are music snobs (like me if you couldn't guess)

uh...

there's no way I can have a collection and not have memorable albums

No Way

You must have LOT's of money to waste if you have a large collection and no memorable albums

A collection where you claim to have half of the albums listed in this post yet you can only think of "gems" as some singles (most of those you also can't remember, too)

Doesn't add up

If you know music, you buy good albums.

There's a reason most of them have been overlooked. I've got hundreds of CD/records/tapes but there's no way I can remember everything I have. Let's be real though. How many of these albums in the thread are really worth owning. Since you own so few of them, allow me to answer that. Not that many.

It's not that I'm in here not contributing due to being a party pooper, it's just that I honestly can't remember. The majority of my library just doesn't fit the criteria. I wouldn't be in here mentioning Guy's self-titled or En Vogue's "Born to Sing", because they don't fit the thread.

The overwhelming majority of these albums fit within a specific timeframe where there was just a lot of R&B records coming out. And record labels were pushing out a LOT of material.

EDIT: Now that I think of it, I have to remember these when I go through the rack.

I don't buy you focused on a genre like this to the point where you have half of the albums listed in this post and you cannot contribute 1 overlooked album of quality.

I have lot's of Black Rock in my collection and I'm sure in a Black Rock post I would not have HALF of the albums listed in that post, yet I definitely could contribute to a Black Rock post since I have shown an interest in Black Rock, like you have shown an interest in this genre (shown by you having half of the albums in this post).

I don't buy having half of the albums in a post about a certain genre and having nothing to contribute.

I know how easy it is to come across music, so I can't buy that.

But for S&Gs, I'll just list the albums mentioned in this post that I own.

Society of Soul - Brainchild
Darien Brockington
Adriana Evans
Davina
Caron Wheeler - UK Blak
Christion - Ghetto Cyrano
Portrait
Solo

That's off the top of my head. I imagine it's more than that.

But, to be honest, I never focused on R&B. I am much more of a hip-hop head. But, I was always in the music stores as a teenager, so I have many bargain bin CDs, where the large majority of the album I mentioned above came from.

I think you need relax though. I could easily name other CDs like

Loose Ends - Zagora & The Real Chuckieboo
Res - How I Do
the Groove Theory self-titled

but, I don't consider them to be overlooked at all. Unfortunately, I'm overlooking many of the albums myself. Also, I came to the conclusion about the singles over albums after a couple of years, so I started focusing on that. If I think of something that I think fits, I'll contribute.

He asked you to contribute one album title to the thread and you avoid the question multiple times, then tell him to relax (in the post where you finally answer the question). LOL this place is terrible.

I don’t think Raheem Devaughn’s debut sold that much. I’d contribute that. I wonder how many regional indie R&B albums are out there that I never heard of. Wish people would post more stuff like that.

An album that didn't get enough play in '96 (I think). A couple of solid remixes and a duet with Faith Evans were the main highlights.

The first single was "Things We Do For Love" -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCTB2-7vF6Y The remix featured an early Jay-Z verse

The second single was "One For the Money" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oywDFeSdq3U

How Can't We Stop (feat. Faith Evans) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_npySB8CEQ

Trippin' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-xGCHh_Bh4

Taste Your Love got a little play on quiet storm radio late at night.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

"When You Think of Me" from this album is one of my all time favorite jams. Good pick.

>Honorable mention goes to Eric Benet's A Day in the Life
>(1999), though it had more commercial success than those
>listed above.

Produced entirely by Stuart Matthewman of Sade.

It's R&B/Soul but kind of borderline Dub/Chill whatever you genre you want to call it, vut that's basically been Sade's lane anyway.

Phased, and Sometimes are a couple good cuts.

Out of all the suggestions I wasn't already familiar with, the Stepchild album was my favorite "overlooked" album to explore. I wonder what happened to them? They were signed to a major label, too. (Warner Bros.)

And I did not like the sole Green Tea song I listened to. Sounded like some bad coffee house neo-soul from the late nineties/early aughts.

Random thought #1: It's kind of interesting that a good number of these albums were (minor) hits here on OKP upon their release (or thereabouts) but even then were understood to be flying at least a bit under the radar, or slightly out of focus. The thread sort of reads as OKP's greatest cult hits, lol.

Peven Everett's a good example. Alice Smith, for sure. Adriana Evans. Joi/Society of Soul.

Random thought #2: These albums are good examples of how, as surprisingly full as Spotify/Apple/streaming music's catalogs are, how much stuff is missing. Peven's Studio Confessions isn't on Spotify. Adriana Evan's s/t record isn't, either. Aside from the issue of how poorly these services pay their artists, I am generally pro-streaming but it's a good reminder that if you start and end there, you're going to be missing some shit.

Random thought #3: Following this, went on to listen to the latter, couldn't find it (and my cds are a mess, so listened to El Camino instead whch I don't know if I ever checked out -- that has some great stuff on it! But, like so many other records of the late 90s to mid-00s, it's pushing almost an hour and I'm just not sure it holds it for that length.

Which makes me wonder if the reason *some* of these records were slept on isn't so much their eclectic quality - which many of them have - but the fact that they often a) didn't have a great lead single AND b) they ran a little long so it was easy for there to either be filler or for the great stuff to get lost...
