"jacob collier - in my room"

Anyone up on this guy? Super young (22!) multi-instrumentalist from London. Recorded, produced, arranged the whole thing himself. I'd heard him on one of the Snarky Puppy albums --- but had *no* idea what this dude can do.

I just gave In My Room it a top to bottom listen --- jeezy kreezy if it didn't make my head flip at least three or four times per track.

This is straight up studio genius, mad scientist shit --- it won't be everyone's cup of tea. It made me think of Rundgren, Zappa, Prince, TTD --- there's a Stevie cover (You and I, done multi-tracked a capella --- gets pretty crazy, but you gotta listen all the way through). Gets proggy at times but balanced by a real love for pop music and pop songwriting (esp via soul, I'd say).

Like, some of these songs have five or six major rhythmic change-ups to them, or key changes, or genre changes, or time changes. Pop, soul, funk, r&b, jazz, rock, polyrhythmic shit ... all here, often on the same track. If you're the kind of music listener that geeks out on that shit, if you get a huge smile on your face when the track just up and goes in a whole new direction, and then another when it does it again, and another when it does it again --- you should give this at least one listen.

This is not everyone's cup of tea. Some will find it too "clean." His voice is very subdued (though sometimes it really goes). Lyrics are "eh" at points. There's a multi-tracked (mostly) a capella Flintstones theme performance that is fun the first time through but that I probably won't listen to again.

But in a different world the title track would be a hit:

I really liked the opener a lot, "Woke Up Today":

"Saviour" comes off surprisingly funky, hang out until at least the 3:45 mark for sure (actually kind of reminds me of D's Sugah Daddy):

"Hajanga" shows his proggier side for sure:

Again, not everyone's cup of tea. (For old OKPS --- honestly, this made me think of jeflee --- he'd be all over this shit...)
