"De La Soul "and the Anonymous Nobody" album post"

1. “Genesis” (Intro) (Feat. Jill Scott)
2. “Royalty Capes”
3. “Pain” (Feat. Snoop Dogg)
4. “Property of Spitkicker.com” (Feat. Roc Marciano)
5. “Memory Of…(US)
6. “Cbgbs”
7. “Lord Intended” (Feat. Justin Hawkins)
8. “Snoopies” (Feat. David Byrne)
9. “Greyhounds” (Feat. Usher)
10. “Sexy Bitch”
11. “Trainwreck”
12. “Drawn” (Feat. Little Dragon)
13. “Whoodeeni” (Feat. 2 Chainz)
14. “Nosed Up”
15. “You Go Dave” (A Goldblatt Presentation)
16. “Here In After” (Feat. Damon Albarn)
17. “Exodus” (Outro)

I've listened to it twice already, all the way through, and it's an amazing record. It's interesting to me how the album is mostly mid tempo with faster and slower paces moved around the album instead of mandated typical album stylings as far as that goes.

The best thing about it is the feeling of the album. It feels like younger Da La, tempered with the wisdom they showed on their later records. The experimentation and conventional abandon of their first three albums is combined with the sage observations they showed starting with Stakes, in a very capable and aware manner.

I could do without all of the guests, as I generally prefer albums without them, but De La Soul has a way of using guests as instruments, if that makes sense. They don't sound like a group with 3o years in, but they sound like a group with 3o years in.

I've also listened to it twice as well. I enjoyed it. It reminded me of the first time listening to Buhloone Mindstate; a confusing yet exciting record, only to get better after further spins.

I wonder if that Premier/Pete Rock produced EP is still coming out?!

It's quite the balancing act to make those styles work together, and they succeeded much more often than they didn't. De La Soul is a really important group and I hope this album makes people appreciate them.

Every song leaves me wishing for crisp, cracking or punchy snares and tighter kicks.

I dig the album but the drums are an adjustment. A few more listens and I should be straight but for now there's a strong disconnect for me on that end. It's not a criticism of the record, just something I didn't really expect and wasn't prepared for.,

Musically it's a fantastic record overall and I like this brand of hip hop.

Also, that album cover is fucking amazing. ,

I thought it was just an instance of me being unprepared but a lot of these sound like generic kits I could pull up on my Maschine or Motif or any number of VST’s.

It’s a very plain sound with very little personal character. That sound works on certain songs, like Royalty Capes, but even then the sound works in spite of itself.

At this point it’s a significant detriment to the album for me.

The whole album consists of them sampling live sessions.

over studio instrumentation.

Even if most of the album was programmed from jam samples, I don't think it would have went against the rules to layer up some of the drums for more umph....but art is art, and like they said on Exodus - they are not me.

The drums have a nice thump to 'em and sets the groove quite well. I think it speaks to the maturity of the group.

I was really hoping to have a bunch of summer bangers to wrap up summer with once this album dropped. Outside of a couple, this album doesn't really provide that. But like you said, and similar to Bionix, I also think this album will get even heavier rotation once the winter depression rolls around.

That track and Unfold drag the album down quite a bit or me.
Liking Snoopies more with each listen.
The Spitkicker joint is pretty zzzzzzzzz, though I have to admit I don't get into Roc Marciano's style at all. Wish he was left off.
Greyhounds, and specifically Pos' verse is my favorite on the whole thing.
Musically there are things coming out that you don't notice at first. Conceptually there are hits and misses. I honestly don't think the album flows well, but there are great things to discover along the way. This ain't gonna sit at the top of the De La food chain, probably will fit in between the AOIs for me.

At first I wanted it to be longer but extending it might have made it too bland especially the way De La approached the subject matter of the song. It's a catchy groove with an abrupt funny ending. The more I listed to it, the more I think I understand why they did what they did.

The whole "tortoise speed" line is kinda lame and it's just not energetic enough. I'm not saying it's crap or anything, i just look at it as an album track that's fine.

Spit kicker.com is another that's pretty blah to me. It's all monotone and Roc doesn't help pick it up at all. Again, it's a decent track but nothing I'm rushing to play again.

Snoopies, Pain now that I've gotten over my initial disappointment in it, Nosed up, Whodeeni, all get run back plenty.

Pete Rock track is dope too. The subtle horrns throughout the track really grab me. And Estelle sounds fantastic.

geeeez - way too mid tempo. I mean all the way through.

I'd say there are 5 songs I could go back to and say
yeah I'd like to hear these again.

the lord intended joint.

the song with 2chainz - the most upbeat, a great beat and verse from Chainz.

the song with Damon.

maybe the joint with snoop?

too many missed opportunities imo.

The Little Dragon collab? has a pretty bridge 3 mins in but tooooo slow, no life.

Have Usher and make a hiphop Counting Crows song. the hook is so fucking literal it's hilarious. Cash that crowd funding check Usher I guess, I mean they got you singing about greyhound buses. And not in a word play, metaphorical way ala Frank Ocean.

the pete rock joint? sleepy. as is almost the entire album.

the Roc Marci song? mixed poorly? sounds lower than rest of album.

the 2nd song on album? with the horns? has that Men in Tights melody..
coulda been a dope TRIUMPHANT sounding song but just too mellow.

I get some of the ambition - shit it's DEL LA!!
they are originators when it comes to experimenting.

but not enough deviation in sound

disappointing - album is just kinda there. blah.

I think it took until the third listen for me to just appreciate it for what it was and not for what I wanted it to be. I think there are two songs that are okay to me but the rest are great.

Even though I had like 6 early released songs I preordered this and I am happy with it.

Dave's performance on this album is an all-time great. Seriously...this dude goes from wrapping the beat around his finger to straight up stomping it out, sometimes within the same verse. And doing it beside one of the pound for pound best ever in the genre is no small feat. In general we take these guys for granted, but they've been more consistent than anybody, especially lyrically, and Dave seems to have no upper limit. He's been breaking ceilings for 3o years with no end in sight.

Completely agree with this.

I've loved hearing Dave over the years and he seems to just keep getting better and better. On this new one, he continues with that upward trajectory. It's actually quite incredible - I can't think of another MC who has actually got better over time (especially over such a long period of time).

Peace,

Nij

Is this their best album?

I know the first 4 have that nostalgia factor.

But technically, from the way I'm reading some of these reviews, do you think this could be their best album as far as quality is concerned?

This can't sniff the air of De La Soul Is Dead. Stakes Is High is better also. I don't know, I like parts of this album but as a whole project it hasn't really clicked with me. I keep giving it burn though to see if it clicks more after several listens. I'd say this is a good album, not great.

And for the record...I don't expect people to hold it as high as their classics.

And I know it's still very early.

But it similar to my Roots post where I just know that the quality of Game Theory is better than Illadelph regardless of how close I hold those 1996 albums.

for me. The rest ranges from very good to solid. Here In After is very poppy which I don't like but Dave drops some real stuff on it so it's hard to hate. The album is a grower.

6.4 lol

*swipe*

De La Soul have been positioned as everything from young hippie weirdos to aging, jaded scolds in the face of their more hardcore contemporaries. But the truth is that they’re just smart, grounded wiseasses whose eccentricities alternately hid or let slip their everyman status. If the clean-cut white yuppie who came in for U2 and came out with De La Soul was positioned semi-ironically at their start, their current position as elder statesmen of rap comes from their crossover eclecticism fine-tuned into a true-to-self versatility. They began showcasing a post-genre adventurousness in the ’80s, opened doors for alt-rap’s next wave in the ’90s, and spent the first half of the ’00s getting Damon Albarn, Chaka Khan, and Carl Thomas to share iPod space. Then they vanished.

Calling De La Soul’s hiatus a disappearance isn’t that much of an exaggeration: In their absence, the new record industry streaming model turned their history of innovative sampling and cultural interpolation against them, and the clearance and rights issues that locked them out of digital distribution posited them as one of the most important, and possibly the last, true holdouts of the CD era. But they had to keep their name out there somehow and found a way around the record business unable to maintain their legacy by funding their music through Kickstarter, just like regular folks (albeit more than $600,000 above most regular folks’ goals). They’ve also come to a phase in their career where an artistic existential crisis is scraping up against the getting-old anxiety that the rest of their Gen X peers are making a big public deal about. And working through that on record might be their most down-to-earth move yet.

and the Anonymous Nobody... is their first album since 2004’s The Grind Date, which featured a still-prolific MF DOOM, a still-peaking Ghostface, and a still-living J Dilla. This one features an equally notable and telling guest list: there’s David Byrne organizing an art-neurosis summit on “Snoopies,” there’s Damon Albarn turning “Feel Good Inc.” inside out on “Here in After,” there’s Snoop Dogg (“Pain”) and 2 Chainz (“Whoodeeni”) and Roc Marciano (“Property of Spitkicker.com”) mastering their own cool, dad-jokey versions of Over-35 rap to go along with De La’s version. Their dozen-year absence and the fact that Pos and Dave and Maseo are all going to hit 50 before the decade is out looms over all that, and it turns a comeback story into more of a claim to their legacy.

It’d be easier to shake off that feeling if there was more of a kick to this record. If your impression of “old man rap” is short on energy and long on reflection, this album won’t change that. At times, Anonymous Nobody feels more like a matter of necessity than enthusiasm, even if the work put into it proves it’s not. When it sounds tired and bummerish, it’s more in keeping with the hazy enervation of contemporary Drake-casualty rap than the proto-backpacker energy of their old joints. And while their casual, collected deadpan was always key to their delivery, Dave and Posdnous aren’t so much rusty as they are restrained in their down moments, all heavy eyelids and middle-distance stares. The flow’s still there—Pos remains way underrated in terms of disjointed, unpredictable rhyme schemes, and Dave still has a way of injecting that characteristic “huh, how about that” understated sharpness into his words—but the energy’s more stoic than ever.

Which makes sense, given the thread of tribulation and frustration that cuts through Anonymous Nobody, likely their bleakest record thematically since Stakes Is High. All the relationships they bring up seem to have been doomed long ago. “Drawn” and “Memory of... (US)” is all about trying to persist through faded love, depicted damningly as a metaphor for music-biz struggle. When they’re telling ass-chaser tales like “Trainwreck” or Dave’s verse in “Whoodeeni,” it’s all so tenuous that they have to bring in a 67-year-old man character in for an interstitial skit to remind them they need to get less reckless about hookups. If that sometimes lends itself to dated tropes—a “morally pure but naive young girl comes to the big city and gets corrupted” rap like “Greyhounds” sounds bad coming from a bunch of middle-aged dudes, even if one of those dudes is Usher—that's a side effect of dealing with accumulated experience.

There’s still no questioning De La’s greatness with observational abstraction. “Royalty Capes” isn’t just a juxtaposition of opulent-kingdom metaphors and gimme-what’s-mine industry beef, it’s the best type of convoluted wordplay: “I choke the blood out of felt tips/Heavyweights up to the front if the belt fits/The wealth is like ivory toothpicks/One out of each tusk/And must gets bust for each and every hiccup.” And “Pain” runs through its weary streak with been-there resilience, as if to say that if this shit’s a constant, it might as well be your inspiration.

There’s unexpected power in that weariness sometimes, but at low points, the big sinking weight of this record is their laconic flow and beats rarely make a case for themselves. At least when they had to tread water back in the day, they had a danceable electric piano hook to do it over. The live-band production and original musical composition is a good juke around any worries about sample rights, but too often the Rhythm Roots Allstars either keep it a little too tasteful (“Greyhounds” aims for the Miguel/Frank school of sumptuous future-soul and lands in a mattress commercial) or swing at pitches in the dirt (the arena rock of “Lord Intended,” featuring the Darkness’ Justin Hawkins, is easily the most inexplicable thing De La’s ever done). Pete Rock and Estelle just manage to bring that glow to “Memory of… (US),” but when it takes one of the greatest producers ever and an actual Crystal Gem to make a cut sound alive, it’s easy to wish the rest of the album had more to work with.

Fortunately, the tasteful outnumbers the ridiculous throughout the record, and if you don’t expect tectonic shifts in the way live-band hip-hop beats sound, the cumulative effect is at least thoroughly pleasant. And sometimes thoroughly pleasant plus heavy bass is just what you need. And when the energy level spikes on the late-album P-Funk homage “Nosed Up,” it’s live enough to distract you from wishing there was more of it. It’s all kind of what a skeptic might expect from hip-hop’s most enduring outsiders coming to terms with finally being outside the youthful drive that helped break them in the first place. Middle-aged rap has rarely sounded more grown, with all the mixed-blessing perspective that comes with it. Anonymous Nobody is kind of a downer, but sometimes that’s what you need, especially when the optimism’s just below that melancholy surface. If De La can find their place again after being gone so long, those clouds have got to break eventually.

That's the most irritating thing about these online reviews and lists.

You can tell the publication works backwards.

They look at who they think they're supposed to praise and then form their opinions in their reviews and lists to fit their agenda.

not because they're bad, but just because they're skits. CBGB could be longer, but really, no complaints. Trainwreck was originally not a song i cared for, but it grew on me, and while it's my least favorite, it's still a good song. Very happy to hear this album in full, and it's so wonderful.

And think The Grind Date is a better listen because there isn't any filler on that joint. But this one has some gems that fit nicely in the catalog as strong tracks. Nothing on here is a De La instant classic but that's ok.

just say you're not feeling it. this is great music for anyone, regardless of age. if you're looking for more uptempo rap, this probably isn't it, but this senior citizen talk is just immaturity and an example of how people don't know how to do anything but be negative.

In response to Reply # 0

First time I listened in headphones, second at home while doing other stuff.

I really could've used a couple more bangers, the beige kinda gets too much at times (I hope that makes sense to someone lol)

I can do without Trainwreck & Property of....in fact if God Us was on here instead of 1 of these songs I'd be cool with that.

There's a couple songs where Dave has a better verse than Pos, that's unusual.

Overall I like it but don't LOVE it, I think it won't get played as much as past records....but I will appreciate it everytime I spin it.

I doubt De La does this, but I kinda wish they would release some acapellas from this album. I think some glorious remixes could be done with some of these songs....but that might just be my 90s side talking.

95. "Mass Appeal Presents “De La Soul Is Not Dead” Trailer *swipe*"
In response to Reply # 0

http://massappeal.com/mass-appeal-presents-de-la-soul-is-not-dead-trailer/

Coming straight outta Amityville, Long Island, the seminal hip hop trio De La Soul — comprised of MCs Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove, and DJ Maseo, plus visionary producer Prince Paul — changed the sound of rap forever. De La’s innovative use of eclectic samples, bugged-out album skits, and multi-layered lyrical wordplay left a stamp on the music that will never die. Their “Buddy” remix became ground zero for the birth of the Native Tongues movement, helping launch the careers of A Tribe Called Quest and giving further shine to rising talents Queen Latifah, Monie Love, and The Jungle Brothers.

Last Friday, De La Soul dropped and the Anonymous Nobody…, their first album in 12 years, and also the first album by any major rap group to be fully funded by crowd-sourcing. Their Kickstarter raised over $600,000—by far the biggest budget they’ve ever seen for an album. This phenomenal show of support is a testament to the fierce loyalty of De La’s devoted fanbase. But that’s not the only reason it’s a big year for Plugs One, Two and Three. Mass Appeal is releasing a documentary online called De La Soul Is Not Dead.

The short film not only looks into the history of De La Soul, but also explores the nagging legal and sample clearance issues that has prevented them from releasing their classic albums such as De La Soul Is Dead (1991) and Stakes is High (1996) on digital platforms like iTunes, Apple Music, or Spotify. Due to this blackout, the current generation of hip hop fans may not fully appreciate their genius and so we’re hoping this documentary helps fill in some those holes. De La Soul Is Not Dead comes out next week on Wednesday (September 7) and in the meantime, please check the trailer above.

I mean everyone's got different tastes. But it's just such a feel good song. I can understand calling it simplistic, calling it a little poppy, bouncy, near the bottom of the song rankings from the album, or whatever .... but to straight up hate it enough to just skip it altogether when listening to the album, that shocks me.

Who knew the "I believe in a thing called love" guy and De La would make a great track. I am loving this album. The hip hop, the rock, and R&B sections of this album blends perfectly. Plus "The Talking Heads" guy on Snoopies. This album screams De La. Royalty Capes is a great intro song to the album.

I could be wrong but their beginnings and first two albums took up the first 20 minutes, Buhloone wasn't mentioned, Stakes and breaking w/ Prince Paul got like 5 minutes, AOI, Bionix, Grind Date got skipped, their loyal fanbase over the years was mentioned, new album got like 2 minutes, then done.

The documentary basically served it's purpose, the beginning is from another documentary about them that was made a decade ago but overall it basically touched on their history (a little) with lot of skipping over important details and people and then when it came to their fifth to ninth albums (AOI:MT to RUN) they basically left those conversations in limbo, I guess it wasn't important to them or the director...anyways.

It was a cool docu for free but like others said thirty minutes isn't long enough and doesn't touch on certain albums enough or enough people they could've interviewed, like where was all the Native Tongue family members, they only talked about one kat and that was Mos Def but no ATCQ, JB's, or even BS, on well.

one thing about the Tribe doc that confused me was that they named LONS, The Beatnuts & Brand Nubian as Native Tongues?

I also thought it was Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, ATCQ, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Chi-Ali and Black Sheep

....and named about 30 individuals ....but Beatnuts were there from the early days with Chi Ali ..Busta was there and so on ...if there was a doc, they could touch on the extended family or (the cousins) ..but "Quest, Jungle & De La Soul" is what most of us old heads would consider CORE Native Tounge

Not bad and I'll admit there's some "not what I selfish fan was wanting" from De La in 2016 at play (Grind Date part 2 is what I wanted, essentially), but there's enough goodness here still.

Love having them around and I respect what they were going for.

Saw them two years back in Boston and they ROCKED it. Tons of energy, running through the crowd rapping, etc. I would've been happy had they just played the classics and gone through the motions but it was definitely FAR more than that. Was really impressed.

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.okayplayer.com/news/de-la-soul-discusses-birth-of-native-tongues-in-doc-outtake.html

De La Soul Discusses Birth Of Native Tongues In Doc Outtake

Several weeks ago Mass Appeal released their De La Soul Is Not Dead documentary. The almost half hour long video documents the influential rap group’s story up until this point.

De La Soul‘s beginnings in Amityville, Long Island; handling multiple sampling clearance battles; the collective’s break with Prince Paul; their infamous 1996 game changing release Stakes Is High; and the present day, where De La Soul continues to create incredible and progressive music (if you have any doubts about that just check out their latest release, And The Anonymous Nobody).

Apparently, Mass Appeal still has some leftover footage from their documentary with the rap group, and has decided to release a chunk of that recently. Yesterday (Wednesday) the website dropped a clip that finds De La Soul talking about a certain rap powerhouse collective they were all a part of — the Native Tongues.

The Native Tongues were, and still are, considered an important pairing in the history of rap music. A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, DJ Red Alert, Queen Latifah, Black Sheep — all of these artists joined together to speak of black pride and afrocentrism, with jazz serving as their sonic foundation.

How it all came to be? De La’s love for the Jungle Brothers.

“We were all just happy to be involved with the music,” Posdnuos said in the outtake. “When we had a show in Boston and performed with the Jungle Brothers, we let each other know how much we loved each other’s music. And after that show we were like ‘Hey man, we have a studio session on this date — just come by.”

That day history was made, because De La was working on one of the most well known songs to date, “Buddy.” Through Jungle Brothers, De La got put on to Q-Tip (which then led to fellow Tribe members Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Phife Dawg being introduced), which ultimately resulted in a shared headlining tour between De La and Tribe.

“It was one common goal — to make music,” Prince Paul said. “Everybody was helping each other.”
