"I owe Joey Bada$$ an apology. And I know some of y'all do."

And some also owe O.E. an apology. He was repping for Joey for years. And I vibe with O.E. on most music, so I kept trying just off his recommendation.

I liked Joey, but felt he was too much of a throwback and hadn't found his own voice yet. Which was understood cuz he was just a kid.

But now that this dude has found his groove. He is easily one of the best M.C.'s in the world. One of the nastiest, though provoking, and creative. And he's 21.

Every time I see he do a guest verse, freestyle, anything he's on point.

And now he's dipping his toes into acting with "Mr. Robot"? Man, I wish nothing but the best for this dude.

And as dude who's set in his ways about hip hop, I love when it's done right by this next generation and they push it forward.

Salutes Joey!

He didn't coon, and got what 99.9999% of commercial
rappers want.

He didn't coon AT. ALL.

Dude has organic and authentic charisma. He's just a
cool little niglet.

And he can rap.

Tyler ain't out here calling Black Lives Matter a "bandwagon" and Bill Cosby "innocent".

if we're talking about cooning.

Tyler making songs that hurts "conventional Black" people's asses like a razor-tipped loofah isn't on the same level as THAT shit.

I'm mad disappointed in this dude, he should have kept it to the "No Comment" like Tyler The Provocateur, who didn't take the easy bait

Tyler took the "I'll be the weird black kid that
white suburban kids love" route. And it got him very
far. But it's not transcendent. It has a peak, and he's
reached it. You can't alienate members of your own
culture by trying too hard to be "the different negro."

The Rah Digga thing was an example: no strong black man
tries to bully Rah Digga. And when he got destroyed, he
had nothing to say, like the little bag of hoe cakes
that he is.

SAD THING IS THIS: Tyler can rhyme. Like, he's actually
a good rapper. Hell, he's probably more *gifted* a lyricist
than Joey is. But Tyler has made some terrible decisions.

He didn't "take that route", that's just who he is.

And who is he really alienating?
Dudes of varying age who think moisturizing their skin is an abomination of European origin? Boyce Watkins?

Certainly not other BLACK rappers or respected BLACK peers in the industry.

This dude got Kanye and Lil Wayne to be on the same song as him, rapping. The latter actually sounding like he didn't drink a bottle full of NyQuil mixed with vodka and crushed up pills while doing so.

Dam Funk, Alice Smith, Roy Ayers, Pharrell (his musical idol), Toro y Moi, Leon Ware, Wanya Morris, Erykah Badu, Schoolboy Q, and Charlie Wilson all have made music with this weirdo. On some of his weirdest tracks. Not even for bandwagoning, either.

Even when he was out there making songs about mostly bullshit, the ones who were the most offended weren't the black folks. It was mostly whites. I honestly don't think Tyler registered THAT much with mainstream America.

I don't get what's so different about his rap persona versus dudes who pretend to be drug dealers, but talk about the same kind of shit (more or less). Besides his whole "dressing like a skater" thing. White people ate it up (and Tyler made fun of it repeatedly), but they also ate up The Chronic.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

he hasn't aliented members of his culture tho. the old guard, maybe yes, but the new crop, who don't even define themselves as hip hoppers or about rap, nah.

maybe I'm biased or have a skewed perspective cause I live in LA AND up the street from the lil "epicenter" of that youth wave on Fairfax, but Tyler has as many "weirdo" I'm not Black like most Black, Black kids as he does the whites riding for him, at least out here. Also Tyler from a Black ass neighborhood, it just so happens it's an upper middle class Black one, so I get why he reps Blackness the way he does. You not all the way off the mark though. It's mad annoying that at 25 Tyler still pulling the angsty loud mouthed millenial rebel without a cause schtick.

I'm def not surprised Earl don't fuck with him no more. The way Earl speaks to folk like Ali Shaheed or Ebro, you can tell he left all that Odd Future steez in the past.

I don't like that entire sound - and I don't like that one of the few new notable artist not using that sound might be moving over to it.

1. EVERYBODY'S doing it!!! It made him unique that he wasn't and STILL
had the #2 album in the country INDEPENDENT. Still was winning!
What more could u want? He was in a position very few get to be in.

2. I don't even mind an "expansion" of one's sound as long as it isn't
a DEPARTURE from what u were doing, which I feel Devastated is.

And side note, Cinematic Music Group was set to be the TDE of the
East but they've been going downhill lately man.

But with all that said, we'll see.

I thought he was dope from the jump and I'm a "old dude" and a "backpacker" but I know a lot of my peers hated.

Anyway, I dig the new track because if anyone actually listened to his debut LP, they knew he was willing to try more shit than Boom-Bap and we're the better for it.

I hope he never tires of experimenting.

Never got the "He's trying to sound too '90s" criticism. Dope music is dope music.

And it appears he's going on tour with Schoolboy Q this fall. That should definitely be interesting.

Not a fan of the music, but dude actually raps so I am pulling for his success. Plus, he is on Mr. Robot and that is one of my favorite shows.

I know trap and stripper music seems to have taken over but I still have faith in this younger generation.

a monster year music wise, probably the first one of its caliber in over 20 years.

and it was up there with Kendrick and Earl (1a and 1b) for me. I even ranked Tyler (hi, O_E) in that year's crop.

Have you heard tribe demo tapes? They garbage. However, if tribe came up in this age folks would have heard them as mixtapes and dismiss them.

Artist don't get to grow like they use to. I use to feel the same way about Charles Hamilton...but it was mental issues that brought him down.

...But in general I am incapable of writing off an artist at 18 years old.
