I would say....
East Coast non-commercial/radio rap: 94 > 98 East Coast commercial/radio rap: 98 > 94 Slow Jams: 94 > 98 R&B Party tracks: 94 > 98 Rap and R&B collabs: 98 > 94 The South's output: 98 > 94 The West's output: 94 > 98 Albums: Tie (hard to really say off hand)
>these, which year was the most enjoyable? >Which surprised you the most? >Which was your favorite? >Which year would you say was the best year >of the '90s?
I would say that 95 was still the most enjoyable overall, since it was the very first one I made, and the reason I started the whole series. I even enjoyed re-recording it all over, since my style and skill level has evolved so much since I made that one three years ago.
I was for SURE the most surprised by 91. On paper, I always figured 92 > 91, and because it was the start of the decade and had the bigger hits, I figured 90 woulda been better than 91 as well. But 90 was actually hard to make, because a lot of the songs from that year just sound over the top dated.
91 was just feeling GREAT when I made it...I didn't realize how many Hip Hop classics dropped that year. It wasn't as many huge club-radio hits like 90 (which had Poison, Humpty Dance, Ownlee You, Treat em right) but it had tracks like Live at the BBQ, all Tribe's records, Quik, Cube, Leaders of the new school, Main Source, etc etc.
I feel like overall, 95 was the best year. I feel like 93 is arguable, as is 94. But 95 was just when everything was on point. The South was making a mark and had dope output with completely different sounds...L.A. AND the Bay were making great music, Rap and R&B fused songs were basically at their peak, and the overall mood n energy that year just felt great. And the slow jams were great, although 93 had the best slow jams overall. ------------------------------
