"You Can Only Keep 10: 90s Edition"

You know the drill. Your collection is getting confiscated but out of the kindness of our hearts, you get to keep 10. Only albums released in the 90s. Any genre. Which 10 are you keeping?

Off top this is my list. I know it'll change once I get home and look through my 90s section.

Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde
Siamese Dream
93 'til Infinity
Midnight Marauders
illmatic
Brown Sugar
ATLiens
Baduizm
Mezzanine
Is This Desire

I'm surprised every time I see this on the boards and have to comment how great it is. It's probably always a conversation between us, ha ha. Regardless, great band I got see a couple times including their first show.

as it was released (a rare thing for me - I'm usually somewhat late) and it did not disappoint.

Due to nostalgia kicking in I found the Spin cover story that made me realize she was local. Being about 12 I was just just getting into music. I lost this issue around the same time and have always been bummed about that. Amazing what's on the internet now.

>Must have been great to see the Amps live.
So much fun. Tipp City always reminds me of the feel of shows. It's also the name of a nearby city. She was also super down to earth. Seeing me sitting out front after a show waiting for dad to pick me up, and realizing we lived near each other she offered a ride. Unfortunately it's well before cell phones (not that dad has one now either, ha ha) and I had no way to reach him.

At Kelley's first show back (from rehab) with the Breeders she wore a Betty Ford Clinic shirt and spilled a beer on me (accident) in front of the stage. This was in 97 at a Tim Taylor (Brainiac) benefit show with Guided By Voices and a few other local acts. I think I have a set list from the show too.

Nostalgia!

Sorry Tribe...I'm just tied to Jewelz more.

Damn...1995 has 4 albums in my top 10. I feel like 94 and 96 were more prolific but the top of 1995 may be unfuckwitable. In addition to those 4 albums you still have Soul Food, Dah Shinin', and Me Against The World.

Yeah, its crazy. Wu had a HUGE influence on me with 36 chambers and the first wave of solo releases specifically.

I almost had 2 Gang Starr releases (I left out Hard to Earn)

These are the 90's albums I go back to the most, but I've been playing more newer stuff.

In theory my selections MAY get monotonous and make me wish I had more diversity. If I only kept 1 Wu album I would add Stakes is High and Mecca and The Soul Brother.

That was a tough choice. I ultimately went with Cuban Linx and Doe or Die over Stakes and Black On Both Sides.

Dah Shinin' and Jewelz got big consideration as well.

People talk shit about my love for AZ and Doe or Die but I honestly would need to hear Gimme Yours/Ho Happy Jackie/Rather Unique/Sugar Hill over damn near any other 4 songs on any other album. Throw in Uncut Raw, Mo Murder and Your World Don't Stop and I needs to keep that one!

And yes, Wu's first wave *is* 90s hip-hop. I could keep all of them.

Man, I've heard everything on this site.

Illmatic-lite
AZ faulted for using No Joe for the title track
Your World Don't Stop is wack because the original is better
I Feel For You is weak

I'm telling you man...Doe Or Die does not get treated like a classic.

But after I posted this I started thinking, that album is 2 Primo joints away from being on par with Illmatic to me.

I love Uncut Raw and I Feel For You but if you replaced those songs back in 95 with whatever 2 Primo joints he could've gotten that album would be seen differently.

I do agree that the original Your World is better but I always loved the album version as well. Those verses are sick.

One of my all-time favorite albums ever.

No way you replace those two songs fam. Those are two of the best cuts on Doe or Die. I would replace the title cut. NO Joe is my dude but his sound didn't mesh with the rest of the album. And I would replace the cut toward the end with the fake Rakim sounding dude on it. Never liked that beat.

I was going to say cut We Can't Win. That is the weakest song.

I agree that the title track didn't fit production-wise but it's just such a dope cut to me.

The remix with Raekwon is dope as well.

And by no means am I suggesting those songs need to be cut.

All I'm saying is that if those two cuts were Primo beats...it would change the perception of the album for a lot people I think.

Pretend NY State of Mind and Memory Lane type of joints were on this album.

Downward Spiral - NIN (If there could only be one this would be it)
Bee Thousand - Guided By Voices (Local heroes, like Big Lebowski it rewards repeat listens)
ATLiens - Outkast (Hard choice between this or Aquemini)
Homogenic - Bjork (Ridiculous bass, aggravating treble)
Antichrist Superstar - Marilyn Manson (Love all the layers to this)
40oz to Freedom - Sublime
Doggystyle - Snoop (What's My Name is perfection)
Voodoo - D'Angelo
Mellon Collie - Smashing Pumpkins (Even though Corgan's voice has always bugged me)
Stoner Witch - Melvins (The flow of tracks 2-4 is awesome)

Live Through This is so good, just missed my list. I'm still a little torn by that decision after seeing it here.

If left only 10 records I would need diversity so...

-Dr Dre 2001 (just made the line)

-Aaliyah-One In A Million (need one Timbaland album)

-Kelis-Kaleidoscope (and one Neptunes album too)

-P. Diddy & The Family-No Way Out (always make me happy)

-Michael Jackson-HIStory (it counts lol)

-Beastie Boys-Ill Communication (it's like 3 albums in one)

-TLC-CrazySexyCool (like No Way Out, this will always put me in good mood)

-OutKast-ATLiens (this album helped mold me into the music fiend I am today)

-Jay-Z In My Lifetime Vol. 1 (it was between Vol 1 and 2....1 stuck to me more)

-Mariah Carey-Butterfly (yeah....don't judge me)

I think I would have to hide Fugees-The Score and Method Man/Redman-Blackout in a fat roll or something lol
