"Prince Surprise-Releases New Album, ‘HITNRUN Phase Two’ (MSN Swipe)"

They say you should never return to the scene of the crime — unless you’re Prince. The Purple One has followed up September’s HITNRUN Phase One with the simply-titled HITNRUN Phase Two, currently streaming on along with its predecessor. (And it more than makes up for his recently canceled tour.) The two LPs actually share a continual track list: His spring single “Baltimore,” which opens Phase Two, is listed as Track 12 directly after Phase One album closer “June.” Unlike the first record, the second features no guests. Stream snippets and download the whole album, subscriber or not, over at TIDAL.

since Prince did his Wife a favor by having her on the stage back in 04.

but that one slow cut at the end sounds like a reject Kenny G track.

I give Prince Props, he finds a sucker to unload reject 3rd tier leftovers. one thing no one will ever accuse Prince of being is a Dumb Turkey. he might be Jive, but he ain't no dummy.

ain't nobody gonna buy that garbage except maybe at the dollar store when they have a half off holiday for a good coaster.

Looks like those side-eye reviews he got for HitnRun Phase 1 sobered P up....lol...Critics biting on this one.....They likey....

Here's what they think about YOU (HitnRun Phase 2)....Dem excerpts....

Pop Matters
link: http://www.popmatters.com/review/prince-hitnrun-phase-two/:

"Yeah, Phase Two is a grab-bag of older recycled tracks and a few newer recordings that were obviously not originally intended to be grouped together as an album. That in itself isn’t a problem—some of Prince’s best works have been similar hodgepodge collections of diverse material. After all, over the course of his career he’s often used older material when he felt the time was right for a song to finally emerge (although not necessarily previously released material, as is the case here). Whether the songs were originally intended to be collected on the same album is completely beside the point—Phase Two hangs together remarkably well as a cohesive listening experience that is as exhilarating as it is unexpected.

As for its predecessor, the less said about it the better. Phase Two makes it very easy to pretend that Phase One never existed. Does it stand up to Prince’s very best material? No. But it does stand up to his best work of the 2000s (3121, Lotusflow3r, and Art Official Age), and it’s certainly true that even an average album by Prince’s standards is better than just about anything else out there. For those disillusioned by HITNRUN Phase One, Phase Two is good enough to renew faith in the mercurial Minneapolis wunderkind. He may have had to trawl through the vault to make it happen, but who cares… Prince is back with an album worthy of his name."

----

The Independent:
link: http://www.independent.co...73056.html

"HITnRUN Phase Two may be Prince’s best album in a decade or two, and certainly the most confident and agreeable confirmation of his qualities for many a year. Recorded over a four-year period at his Minneapolis studio with a 16-piece horn section combining his own NPG Hornz with the city’s Hornheads, it’s a testament to both the enduring power of his Seventies funk influences and the sonic efficacy of analogue recording: the heft and balance of the horn arrangements throughout is remarkable, rich and sonorous in a way rarely encountered in these digital days. As Prince boasts in “Black Muse”, the album’s longest track, “Rock’n’roll and jazz, so you know we’re built to last – it’s cool”. And so it proves."

----

The Guardian
link: http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2015/dec/14/prince-hitnrun-phase-two-first-listen-review-album

"These weaknesses are more than made up for by Black Muse, an exhilaratingly, effortlessly free-and-easy Earth Wind & Fire-style gem that reminds you Prince is the most uncannily gifted musician alive. And, above all, by the penultimate track. The stunning six-minute Revelation comes on like a super-slow sex jam in the Smokey Robinson/Marvin Gaye Quiet Storm genre, although it’s initially uncertain whether he’s addressing his lover or Jehovah. In its closing monologue, however, all becomes clear: after making cryptic rhyming reference to English witchcraft and Hebrew, Greek, Roman and Pharaonic mythology, he concludes: “But the task at hand until we see the sun / Is to keep doing you, until you come … to Revelation.” Prince, in a nutshell: even when his head is in the clouds, his brains are in his underpants."

So far I think the last installment was more interesting than this new one.. not necessarily better but this phase two stuff just seems like more of the same. Even when phase one didn't work I respected the fact he was going a new direction.

I like Phase 2 more than Phase 1 (which was VERY shaky beyond a few joints). I like the warmness of the horns on Phase 2 (I don't know what the homie black is talking about. The horn arrangements on the new record sound more like a nod to mid 70s Wonderland mixed with the Rainbow Children than Sly) and the lyrics r better....

I like AOA more than both. But Phase 1? I would rather forget about that one....

Art Official Age saw a return of dudes "edge" in shimmering glimpses...even the other "rock" album had a more playful, jammy edge than we're used to from, dude (especially lately).

This Phase 2 sound is a concession to 90's Uncle Princey and the NPG sound when he wanted to "get some of that Babyface money'... that stuff will always be offensive to old school Prince heads because it's the sound of the grouchy old fuddy duddy Uncle Princey who clearly is interrupting his Skype time with Tavis, Dick Gregory and Loveboat Larry to beat "somebody" over the head with "real music, by real musicians".

This is the nigga that was the George Lucas of the Linn drum bending over backwards to be conventional and preachy about an "old school Black muse" he was stomping around in leg warmers and a trench coat pouting like a menstruating stripper to distance himself from. SO...NOW when he's still a pouty obtuse grumpy old man we're supposed to just not even blink at these schizophrenic stylistic shifts into smooth jazz and adult contemporary R&B?

...Nigga (P.), tell me some good war stories about why you don't seem to respect all the bad ass mofos you put on...by the way... over the top of these snoozy NPG Music Club freebie caliber "albums" you're so hyped about these days, and I might listen more than once.

I liked AOA for the most part tho so won't give up entirely, this just hasn't peaked my interest at all. He's starting to lose his superfans that caped for everything (me), so think he's going to start having problems beings he ain't getting new fans with this stuff...

P's problem ain't the music....Old Heads rarely pick up new fans with new music...

Dude's issue is he doesn't understand how to take care of his own musical legacy...No reissues, no remasters, no box sets....nothing.....Prince will only have problems when he can no longer sell out the Garden....And that ain't happening anytime soon...

(BTW, the new album is actually good. Better than that Phase 1 uneven mess...)

Meanwhile right now I'm listening to a playlist I made featuring his best from 1985 through 1987. It's my version of the Parade and SOTT deluxe/re-releases Prince refuses to create.

This is a traditionalist's album....There are songs on here that should have left off (Xtraloveable....should not even have seen the light of day....The original blows it out of the water.....The new version is sterile as hell...)...

But for the most part, this is a revitalized mix of late '80s Prince and the Rainbow Children (sound wise)....

I mean, the second part of "Black Muse" blows practically anything out of the water Prince has done since the mid 90s....No hyperbole.....Real talk....There are various moments like that on this new album...

And all this^^^is coming from someone that gave P the finger after that Phase 1 album...

I liked 20ten more than I did MPLSOUND. that album sounded like Prince doing a Prince impression. Lotusflow3r was better, IMO. an understated mood album.

20ten just sounded like casual music making, though... there were some songs that gave me that "Verizon Wireless Commercial" vibe. I actually get hype over hearing "Compassion" at random, for some reason. Even though it's kind of "Graffiti Bridgey". "Future Soul Song" and "Walk In Sand" are worth it. it's also brief. Prince doesn't spend too much time on each song.

but out of all of them, AOA was the only one that sounded like Prince was totally into it.

There's some Prince cllassics on here like Black Muse, Revelation and When She Comes
Even the duds get a pass from me because there's no sight of rapping and scratching Prince.
The fact that he held back from going there speaks volumes for me.
Also happy as a lark that Josh and his MacBook noise maker app ain't on it either.

Return to 80's form? nooooooo and I don't care

After listening to that A to Z special, dude's catalog is one of if not the greatest of all time
No one has crossed styles and genres like him with such ease
So for him to still be able to challenge his self and make good songs speaks of his genius
He should have burned out a long time ago.

Wow, I approached listening to Phase 2 with zero expectations. With the surprise drop and no fanfare, I didn't even get a chance to speculate on the quality of this record. I pressed play and was pleasantly surprised. Some real solid cuts (several that we've heard before), a couple of songs that could possibly age into being classics (Black Muse and When She Comes really stand out to me), just a handful of cringe-worthy moments and no Andy Allo bars on the Extraloable redo. I can listen to the whole album from front to back. This is a much more even effort than Phase 1.

Nice job P. This album was an unexpected but appreciated little gem.

and I liked AOA. "Time" is one of the BEST Prince songs in over 2 decades. I listened to it again recently and I just started shaking my head; I would love nothing more than an album full of THAT kind of music. I think even the most skeptic of the skeptic Prince fan would like that song, too.

Phase 1 was the first Prince album I outright disliked in quite a long time. Like, there were some that I found dull, but HITNRUN Phase 1 was just insulting. That album I'm fine with being in Tidal purgatory.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

A lot of Phase 1 was cringe worthy....Just that simple. It's the kind of album that gives credence to Maxx's PRINCE AIN'T SHIT NOW rants....lol....Beyond 3 or 4 songs (especially "June"), Phase 1 seemed desperate....

Phase 2? It's a damn good album. And it's different in that this time P's usage of live horns does not = LAS VEGAS, SLY + THE FAMILY STONE COVER BAND boredom...

The horn phrasings this time gives more of a nod to Stevie Wonder's early to mid 70's brass work with a dab of Weather Report/pinch of Herbie Hancock style commercial jazz thickened by that Prince swag....

But what makes it stand out even more r the lyrics and Prince's vocals (this is the best Prince has "sounded" in years)....It sounds like late '80s Prince meets the Rainbow Children....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

I mean you're right that parts are cringe worthy but it came off to me more as dude coming out of his comfort zone and taking a real chance for once.. and chances don't always work out 100%. Something like MPLSound and 20Ten are what sound desperate to me.

OP!!!!

What up homie?

I wasn't diggin' Phase 1 beyond 3 or four cuts. I do think "June" is probably his best and most interesting song in 20 years and could easily be on P's prime 80's era compilation. It's that good. But the first 3 or four songs on that album? coaster status...That Rita Ora song had me mad as fuck...lol

Just... mostly rubbish. and that intro was a troll job that didn't to happen. it was the musical version of Bad Box Art Megaman in Street Fighter x Tekken (or for those of you who don't get the reference, the casting of Diana Ross as a role-altered Dorothy in the film version of The Wiz).

it reminded me of '90s Prince, and not in a good way, either.

as I said above, I think the reason why MPLSound was not so memorable is that Prince was doing a Prince impression. Lotusflow3r, as I felt about 20ten were more casual and unencumbered by his past as an artist (I know, Prince was using "Prince" sounds on it, but the songwriting sounded less forced to me). At least the latter didn't have a wide release (or much of one at all). If he tried to come out with 20ten and sell it in stores I would agree with "desperate". He intended to give that one away.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

because he tried a direction and it didn't work.. rather than plodding along in that same "Vegas Funk" lane that never really was fresh to begin with.. that's what most of Phase Two sounds like to my ears. Sure there are moments.. and I'd admit there is more quality in Two than One, but the shit just doesn't interest me. I'd rather be mad at Prince than bored by him.. that just makes me sad.

Phase 2 a very solid album from start to finish.

Prince doesn't need to ever do singles. He should only put out full albums. He shouldn't put out any singles beforehand. People get thrown off because they "already heard it". And i get that. But overall, as an album, Phase 2 is solidly good.

Princeguy reviews:

"No pretentiousness.

No pompous re-interpretations.

Sometimes, a movie is just a movie. You work hard for your money.

The decision is yours.

See and enjoy what YOU like."

Prince should have stood behind that album more. it's a case of Prince sounding "contemporary" but not embarrassing, for an album length. and confirmed, he was back to cussing on FUNKNROLL.

a lot of people who know "of" Prince but aren't super fans said they liked it too.

Yo, P...

No disrespect, homie...you're one of my favorite.
Let's talk about Hit n Run Phase 2.

First of all, your songwriting is hit or miss this decade.

Second of all, I HATE your horn arrangements!!!
Now...for so much of your song structure to be built on some Sly and The Family Stone DNA...your music was best served by horns in the fashion that paid DIRECT homage to S&tFS...Atlanta & Eric doing the Cynthia (R.I.P.) & Jerry thang. This bright Quincy Jones orchestral brass/wood winds schitt is PAINFUL!!! Please stop.

Third, I can't stand the backing vocalists on your schitt AT ALL, you're Prince. You don't hire "20 ft From Stardom" wannabes, you get non-singing chcicks that look good in underwear to bring life to "Take Me With U" or you get bad ass chicks like Wendy, Lisa, Sheila, Jill Jones...the chick from Sign O' the Times band was the ONLY "SANGER" that's ever sounded good on your schitt.

Also...your vocals are sounding odd. I've already told you your one man Sounds Of Blackness Choirs were garbage barges of recorded bullschitt, you still flirt with them, but ...lead vocal wise...you still think you on some Luther McBabyface suited for R&B vocalist styled vocalist?! Nigga, your best schitt was New Wave Rockabilly filtered through Sly and James...now reverse engineer Luther singing on some schitt like that and look at how crazy you sound singing about underage drinking pussy and Jesus and Black history nowadays.

But I see you trying to sound like "the old you" on AOA and stuff like the new Extralovable (even though them backing vocals are flaming wackiness).

You need a band homie. Real m.f.'s to bounce off of...MonoNeon is a step in th right direction, Morris on drums is a step in the right direction, you play bass...no sequencers!!! 2 vocal tracks for you at most...but some cats that you respect their skills and their voices, not just m.f.'s that'll listen to your damn crochety old man religious rants.

This album sounds like Old Friends For Sale (the album) Jr.

Holla at me, I'll wear Billy's sunglasses and be your one man quality control litmus test.
See if you don't make the best most cohesive album you've made in decades.

Now let me go delete this b.s. off my phone. Great Ebony interview by the way, it let's me know you read my "Prince Is Only As Good As The Musicians He's Surrounded By" thread here in The Lesson. You ALWAYS seem to respond to my gripes on wax or in interviews.

Do that solo piano tour. Don't do nothing but demo songs outside of that tour..4-track, cassette...you got a lot of bad habits to break,Mr. Nelson

The only thing we will agree on is Phase 1 was side-eye-inducing and that the Ebony interview was about the best damn sit down I've ever read on Prince....The shit is so inside-baseball, raw, so personal that P just told Ebony to take it down because he thought he was being quoted off the record...lol

My favorite quotes though, starting on the rumor that Susannah was the spark for "The Beautiful Ones": “Do you want him or do you want me,” that was written for that scene in Purple Rain specifically. Where Morris would be sitting with Apollonia, and there’d be this back and forth. And also, “The beautiful ones you always seem to lose,” Vanity had just quit the movie. To then speculate, “Well, he wrote that song about me”? Afterwards you go, “Who are you? Why do you think that you’re part of the script that way? And why would you go around saying stuff like that?”

On if he heard the Time's Condensate album: "No. You know, it was Morris playing drums and me on the bass. That’s how we would make the basic track. Naked. Just like that, and nobody would know. And then when you put the keys on it and the guitar, then that’s what The Time was. And it was perfect. Going through it now, I can hear all that stuff. Like “The Walk.” I hadn’t heard “The Walk” in ages. It’s like you can’t believe that you did it. I don’t even know how it’s possible. I don’t. I do but I don’t. That can never be duplicated again. It was a time period. His son sings now, and look just like he did. So it should be like Steph and Dell Curry. Let’s do this. The Time can still be alive, he just needs to do it. I’m gonna see him in a minute anyway to work together. Musicians I’m cool with. But other folks standing around talking about they gon’ take out the vault? Boy…"

On the rumor he picked up Eric Leeds after seeing Clarence Clemons onstage with Bruce Springsteen: "How do you get “Hot Thing” from “Born in the USA”? ’Cause that’s where Eric shines, on “Hot Thing.” But how do you get Madhouse from “Dancing in the Dark”? I have a lot of respect for Bruce and everything he’s done. He’s one of my favorite bandleaders of all time. But he wouldn’t even say that....Clemons, that’s just a sideman. One of the greatest sidemen in history, and he’s a star in his own right. Them two was nothing like that. C’mon, man. That’s a whole different thing. Clarence’ll smile and you’ll forget every solo Eric ever did.

I mean..there's more (his comments about a member of the Revolution selling some old Prince memorabilia and him confronting him was some heartfelt shit) ....But damn P was on some open book shit that night...

If he wants to be an arrogant God fearing loon....he's earned that right.
It gets MORE people interested in the music (I downloaded and thoroughly listened to that schitt off the strength of the Ebony interview).
I can respect all of that.

Now, as someone who's spent hella gwap over hella years on Prince, he should respect his fans and speak just like this more. He leaves so much room to speculate on his hairbrained ideas (whether they are sound or merely wild hairs up his ass...YouTube, Spotify, re-masters, etc.)

I expect blowback from folks...Sheila, Wendy & Lisa, Dez, Fink, etc, but I respect them too cause whether he acknowledges it or not "the greatness has diminished n the absence of these folks. Clarence died still on great terms with Bruce. Will Eric be able to do that? Can the fans enjoy the history or are we just expected to saddle up and love whatever direction fearless leader is flowing in?

I agree on dude giving up the ghost on those interviews....Them quotes had me HOWLING...lol..And I def want to hear what people in his past camp have to say...especially Sheila and W&L...

But in terms of P's greatness TODAY? I think it has little to do with getting a great backing band and more to do with diminishing law of averages....Same thing with Paul Mac, JB, Aretha, Stevie, etc...It has little do do with who P surrounds himself with...I can count on one hand the no. of artists who DIDN'T lose their prime powers as they get older...I wouldn't think too much about it. This is what happens when u age.....There were great albums in the Prince catalogue that were done for dolo with little input from underlings an bandmates....

Prince blew his wad during his prime and released two decades worth of music...What he does today is all gravy. I find Phase 2 a good album for an aging lion....Phase 1 pretty much sucked beyond 3-4 tracks...AOA, I liked as well. Didn't like joint before that.....

Again, I don't get too crazy over P's musical output as he approaches 60. But I am impressed that the old Purple dude still records like a mad man...And I'm still impressed that he has gotten better as a musician (he's a better bassist and guitarist than he was in the '80s)...

Basically, I'm going to let Prince do Prince....He earned it. My only beef is his fuck ups with those remasters. But THAT ABOUT IT...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Hey...What Prince said in that interview is pretty standard asshole, over the top, fuck-u-pay-me superstar shit....

But talk to me when he starts doing shit like this:

"In an interview with Los Angeles urban radio station KJLH, George Daniels expressed outrage that R. Kelly, who he said was “like a son” to him and his wife, would have gotten into a secret relationship with his 21-year-old daughter, Maxine, who has known Kelly since she was 7 and “in essence … would be his sister.” Daniels called it a “betrayal.” Maxine, her father said, was lured away from her studies by Kelly’s expensive gifts, which included a car. “When a child is sidetracked, when a child is persuaded to lie, to go against ,” George told KJLH, “when you have the toys and the gifts and the shopping sprees … that’ll turn anybody.”

GEORGE was in support of Robert 100 percent...When the world was coming down on him, George and his family backed Kellz and pushed back any and all accusations...In fact, when everyone on Kellz' team started to jump ship as his child molestation charges hit the media matrix, George was still there as a true friend. George was the essence of family...

And then Kellz started sleeping with his "sister"....A individual he had known since the age of 7...A "girl" that called him big brother...Basically this was Woody Allen 2.0...

If George, a man who had given his unconditional support to Kellz for decades bailed on the man, what does that say?

like i said things went down with George's wife Regina. that is the real fall out which ain't been talked about. Kellz and George fell out and that is really between them both. I know all about George Daniels and Him and Minnie Riperton and his hustle. i know about his record shop etc..

however he ain't even the longest supporter in the R camp that honor goes to DJ Wayne Williams.

like i said there is another aingle which ain't been brought up and since the obvious Anti R.Kelly Bias agenda is set forth,

the only person in the camp that surprised me bouncing was Henry Love.

and i heard how that went down. other than that, not surprised.

George Daniels likes that spotlight as well and I got respect for him,etc.. and i'll just leave it at that.

I was FLOORED that it even posted...It was the most unguarded Prince interview I've ever read....Ever....

They give what they want...Have u read that Rakim interview on Grantland a few years back? Well, I wouldn't even call it an interview. Dude didn't talk, but everybody else around him did....

Prince gives interviews every album cycle...The issue is he speaks in riddles....Dylan does the same shit...He will def. talk to folks....Hell, he will talk for a biography...But it has to be on HIS terms...

To tell u the truth, I would much rather Prince stop being a stubborn ass and give his musical catalogue a proper treatment than hear him talking about why he can't go to the grocery store anymore...

Instead of being cryptic and cheeky on these 1/2 dud 3\4 inspired 1/4 Watchtower picnic basket albums he's been rolling out JUST TO KEEP HIS FACE OUT THERE.

I notice now we're counting albums, "HIS 39th STUDIO ALBUM" like that makes 'em good.

He 'gon fuck around and be mad when Questlove writes a best-seller on his ass, then he'll come out with a giant-sized picture book (looking like an a androgynous Golden Girl) and a beat tape made on his Purple sampler piano co-released on Stones Throw.

Prince...get some blue jeans, a Steve Jobs mock turtle neck, some Jorns or them Black Yeezy's and have the box set, audiobiography, authorized documentary, remasters, and quarterly offerings ready to roll out in 2017 your 40th year in the game.

R.Kelly does all types of R&B Period and still fresh. when was the last time Prince was still fresh? Prince can do alot as a instrumentalist, but he can't write a memorable song or hook to save his life, broke down singing
and just alot of 4th tier leftovers that a Good QUestion wouldn't even take for a comeback period.

who was crying back in a rolling stone interview back in 96 about R.Kelly keeping him out of Number 1 because of "Bump and Grind? do the math and look it back up.

it ain't the only time Prince been looking up to the ARRUH.

turkey "Fortunate"is the best Slow cut that Prince ain't made in the past 25 years period. Maxell out Prince than Prince and R.Kelly composed and Produced that Gem.

I liked Lakeside though to me they were a good 2nd tier band, but in their defense for a moment anyway they could groove on the synth funk and not be cornball with it, until 84 and then it was downhill after that.

but they were really good for a 2nd tier band and them boys can play as you know Ohio owns the funk.

but nobody is seeing the Elements. only the Isleys come close IMO.

and you been adding green stamps as down payments.

you tripping R.Kelly got classic songs, albums and live tours, made careers and brought back acts we liked as kids.

what has Prince done in 25 years but come off like a Broke older version of Lenny Kravtiz and make Puppet Muzak.

lets see Prince over the past 25 years

weak singing, overrated glossy albums, under written songs and over produced albums
and no label in their right mind would put out them trashes.

was that in the last 25 years?
R.Kelly derailed Lady Gaga's career with his messy scandals...was that in the last 25 years?
R.Kelly begging people to buy his piece of schitt album...cause why? It's garbage and he preys on little girls?

What's R. got to fall back on?
His ex-wife says he don't pay child support on her reality show. You think that woman is fed up?

Maybe he'll go back to singing on the subway.

Kels would pay with his top 12 14yr. olds for Jay-Z and or Beyonce to say anything about his new album.
R.Kelly just plain sucks

in many a year. Gaga was doomed with budget and the powers that be got her doing duets with a legendary but photo shopped tony Benneitt at this stage no thanks.

Gaga is a huge Kellz fan and has said as much.Prince muiscally is like her stale ole Grandpa.

Kellz helped make Jay Z's career. remember Kellz had done the colab thing big time with Biggie, and Nas while Jay Z was still on the come up.

Kellz don't need no Lay Z and that weak Tidy Bowl Streaming service,

Kellz got more Number 1 R&B ALbums, hits, and on top colabs. where is Prince's colab with Jeezy at? where is his colab with SNoop at?

Kellz is more stable as well, he stayed with his record label and didn't cry and act a fool.

Prince is a off his rocker corn ball has been jive turkey who is stuck in a time warp,

like you didn't know the name of everybody black that has performed on it and for the record King of Music Michael Jackson still has the standard performance there.

Prince's performance was decent not memorable IMO.

R.Kelly is to Black for the Super Bowl and you know this. however just on catelog, impact and longevity he should get that gig is a no brainer
and without protest he would
and aruguably he might be the best performer ever on there even given Michael Jackson a run, because imagine folks bumping hard to Ignitiation

act like Kellz couldn't turn that super bowl out ya trippin

so if one album goes double glad bag in a nearly 3 decade career of hits and dominace I hardly call it the end

Prince bitter because nobody buys those dumps he keeps putting out.

turkey is delusional as all get out as if Jay Z and Beyonce are desperate if he hits or not?

trips me out how nobody is calling prince out on jocking for jay z. if Prince had the goods he could sell them joints on the paisley park grounds and get a distributor
and get them joints
and split his stuff 50-50.

he knows he wanted to do something with Puffy. he just acting in different now.

Rick James would have called a turkey out without all the song

he just got some delusional fans who still think that 80's mind games are still cool
and its corny now.

Rick did it up fool.

Yeah...Rick's insane jealousy and subsequent hijacking of Prince's keyboards from the tour they did together says a lot about how much Prince turned Rick into a man desperate for his career.

Don't even bother with Prince stole "licking his tongue out between his fingers" or some dumb insignificant b.s. (Which I KNOW you will).

and its not like Rick wasn't already bigger than Prince Prior either, lets remember who opened for whom?

acting like "Dream Maker" didn't inspire and influence Prince on slow cuts.

acting like that latin groove break down on "Fool on the Street" didn't inspire Prince.

Prince use to bump to "Bustin Out" and He grooved to Rick James just as we all did and you included when you sprayed afro sheen on your Fro
and rice Crispys as well.

and I love Cameo, but they ain't seeing no Rick James. Rick was a better writer and stylist with his songs.

i give Cameo Props for making it past Hip Hop and New Jack Swings mid 80's take over and out lasting bands and other acts, however
Rick James wrote more important songs and Albums than them IMO.

RIck was big on Himself and others. turkey you at home right now with a turkey and cheese sandmich doing the "Carlton Banks dance" to "Party all the time"

because you know that Prince use to be cool about not speaking about said other artists, or this or that. and its a trip to hear him speak frankly like that, because he never said a whole lot.

hearing him talk about Puffy reminded me of Rick James saying how war a Brother wanted Al B Sure to Produce his follow up album after Wonderful which Rick cut and gave away for free.

Prince is a transcendent icon....Dude can sell 5 copies of his new joint and sell out a 20,000 seater in one day.....I love Rick...But let's not go there...

Prince has always been a known asshole....He was an asshole when he was broke and an asshole when he became a superstar....

But I would rather have that than, you know...pissing on 13 year olds little girls....

yeah right.he should be, because he stole from him big time.

a dead Rick James is still twice as funky as a Alive Prince.

you and I both know that rick would clown Prince on running to Jay Z for help to push out those 3rd and 4th tier reject cuts.

its too easy. Rick would have clowned the Lenny Creole and broke Becky No No's.

But I'll throw in my 2 cents on the album and admit that it's pretty damn good. Not great. Not amazing. But a cool listen that doesn't have me *running* to skip any tracks.

Some running thoughts:
--- Baltimore sounds better on here than it did previously - not sure what (if anything) changed, but I'd sort of written it off. Really wish he left out the no justice/no peace chant, just comes off awkward.
--- Screwdriver should be retired - it's not the jam he thinks it is. And the hook line (I'm your driver you're my screw) is just godawful. Rocknroll Loveaffair isn't nearly as bad, but it's another one that I think he *thinks* is super cool but is really pretty tepid.
--- Big City is (imo) the best cut on here. Infectious as hell, simple but catchy, cool lyrics.
--- Black Muse, When She Comes, and Revelation all deserve attention on this record. Stare *almost* makes this list but just falls short -- cool bass riff, cool groove, but never comes together as a whole.
--- Look at Me is cool but needs better production - sounds like a NPS outtake, fine idea but mediocre execution
--- 2Y2D and Groovy Potential never really take off for me. 2Y2D's backup vocals are tired and the larger arrangement lags, which is a shame... with a bit of work both could have been standout cuts here.
--- This remake of extraloveable could be worse, I suppose, but when you go and pull out the original you can't help but be frustrated... this has none of what made the earlier version tick.
--- The horns throughout the album feel pretty predictable, but it is nice to hear them here.
--- I can't decide how I feel about his overly self-aware nods to the past: Take Me With U reincarnated as the framework for Rocknroll Loveaffair; the "Last December" appearance in "Black Muse"; the Sexy Dancer and Kiss bits during "Stare"--- all feel just too on the nose and too out of place.

Really though, this feels like a mix of solid b-sides, and I mean that positively --- much more in sync with AOA than that piece of shit phase one in terms of quality and sensibility, and that's a good thing. But it makes you wonder how fucked up his sense of taste must be to think that Phase One had anything worthy of actual listeners buried in its tracklisting.

Further makes you wonder what he could accomplish these days if he didn't seem so pressed to release what sound more like sketches than finished, fully-formed final recordings. Might be able to get us talking about a *whole album* of gems rather than the diamonds in the rough...

yeah. the remix to "Rock N Roll Loveaffair" is much better. But I can see why it wasn't included here.

"Revelation" is great. Probably my favorite song in this collection.

Thankfully it was missing some of what made the last remake of this song a toilet. the one on this album is OK... but yeah, it's definitely not seeing the '80s one

this one feels more NPG-ish, in that Prince is leaning toward "Black" ears in a way he didn't in the '80s

>--- The horns throughout the album feel pretty predictable,

when it comes to Prince and horns, I'm notoriously curmudgeonly...

Yep. I kind of feel conflicted about that. On one hand it's not bad to hear him call back, on the other it kind of reminds me of "Prince doing Prince".

no doubt

The usual R Kelly and Rick James sidetracking is beyond ridiculous at this point.

Dude just put on two of his best live shows of his career from all accounts....Just him and a piano....Prince was at his most open and heartfelt. Dude talked about his father; his relationship with Lisa and Wendy; his respect for Bowie and Joni Mitchell........A LOT of full songs...

Some of the songs he performed:

The Batman Theme (the original theme from the 60s...As someone noted "He then went on to talk about his father leaving at age 7 and he went into Batman the first song he ever learned...")
Baby
Dirty Mind
I Wanna Be Your Lover
Do me Baby
Ur gonna see Me
Case of You
Purple Rain
Kiss
I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore
Baltimore
The Love We Make
Free
Something In The Water
Anna Stesia
The Breakdown
Starfish & Coffee
Condition of the Heart
The Beautiful Ones
Rocknroll Love Affair
Raspberry Beret
The Ladder
Dear Mr. Man
Look At Me Look At U
Free Urself
Sometimes It Snows In April

Better enjoy him while he's still here, folks.....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

We usually have decent luck with folks stopping at least once in NYC to perform.

But if P doesn't bring this to Gotham, I'm hitting the airports or Penn Station because this sounds like a show that's worth traveling to...
