"Will a generation miss out on Prince because of his stance on da web?"

I can't think of an artist (I listen to) that does a better job of keeping his stuff off of youtube and streaming services (though a complete blackout isn't possible).

Do you think it's possible that it will hurt him with a generation of kids who seem to get almost all there music from streaming services and youtube?

Yep...that's my main issue with dude.....

Hell, even if Prince doesn't want to allow the Youtube's of the world to showcase his music (the Beatles estate is starting to go a similar route...), the least he could do is finally do some justice to his music catalogue....

Those great '80s albums sound like they were recorded in a closet....Meanwhile Bruce Springsteen is dropping a 100 disc set for The River, with outtakes and the whole kitchen sink....

But I know why Prince is stalling. Dude is not too comfortable with his "Dirty Mind" past....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

It's too bad.

For all the MJ comparisons, Prince also cut off his nose to spite his face.

isn't the singles.

Even people my age, late 20's/early 30's, really don't know much beyond the surface radio hits. So many of my friends never heard Housequake, Sexy dancer, Ballad of Dorothy Parker, or even Adore until I played it. I remember playing Adore, and my boy said "OHHHHHHHHH that's where Jamie Foxx got it from!"

So it's even worse for younger folks who would never even know where to start with Prince.

Thom Yorke is basically saying the same thing as old man Prince....The irony is Yorke has taken it a step further.....WAAAAAAAAY FURTHER.....lol.....

Daily Beast

Thom Yorke: Google and YouTube Are Like Nazis

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke thinks YouTube and its parent company Google are like the Nazis because they've "seized control" of art that belongs to other people. During a recent interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the musician was asked how other artists can profit in the digital age. "People continue to say that this is an era where music is free, cinema is free. It’s not true," he asserted.

"The creators of services make money—Google, YouTube. A huge amount of money, by trawling, like in the sea—they take everything there is. ‘Oh, sorry, was that yours? Now it’s ours. No, no, we’re joking – it’s still yours’. They’ve seized control of it—it’s like what the Nazis did during the second world war. Actually, it’s like what everyone was doing during the war, even the English—stealing the art of other countries. What difference is there?"

>and other music services I would imagine.

That's because Thom and them don't have full control of their music yet....

Prince owns his masters, so he can go full HAM...(Thom has lately been going hard at his band's old label...On some Y'ALL MAKING ALL THIS MONEY OFF OUR BACKS shit...)...The Beatles are doing the same shit...It's getting harder and harder to find actual songs on Youtube. Fans are now resorting to posting videos of Beatles Rock Band to hear classic shit.....

To tell u the truth though while I think Prince has been taking it a bit too far with this erase-me-from-the-Internet-except-TIDAL stuff, I'm more pissed that dude continues to miss the boat on those album reissues....That's a bigger shame.....

He's confusing someone making money off his work to the confiscation of art.

He still has his art - no one took it away. (Or kileld anyone.)

Does he think the Nazi's came in with tape recorders and Napster!

It could be considered corporate tyranny - but it's not the NAzis.

He has a problem with capitalism - it's not a fascistic totalitarianism form of government.

(I do think he should sue if he has a case - I support that.)

He just needs to stop bullshitting on those reissues, mane.....That's all....Drop the fucking remastered reissues, add them bonus tracks, and play nice with WB....But we know that won't happen....

There should be al kinds of Prince box sets on the market.....That's where he's really fucking up....Dude is bullshitting....It's even more side-eye worthy than his Youtube/Spotify beef....

Like I said before, Bruce Springsteen knows how to give the fans what they want....And he's not afraid of his past...He embraces that shit...

Prince could learn something from Captain Jersey......

Think he wasn't happy with the response to Crystal Ball. People were mad about song selection, him changing stuff. Whatever, I was cool with it and just want more.

And those 80s albums def need remasters. Put out the City Lights box set official and I would be there. Its crazy he has virtually no official live albums save that One Night Alone box 15 years ago.

why he got to be nuts? lol..He has a reason; we may not like it or understand it but i am sure he has a reason...I tend to believe its as simple as him not wanting to invest time or energy into something he has already done...During the 25th anniversary he stated that "he was there" during the making of the film; no need to revisit

Prince is about his money, right? His main beef with streaming services and such is that they don't pay the artists what they deserve...

Okay, I can dig that...

But if you are truly about your money, then wouldn't it be common sense to take advantage of your massive catalogue....?

And forget all the "he was there" stuff...Just from a pure sonics angle, those '80s Prince albums SOUND like shit....There are plenty of other music acts that have battled it out with their labels and have championed artistic freedom that have released remastered reissues, etc. Prince is in the music business. He ain't some angelic deity who pees Purple Kool Aid....lol

This is bullshit^^^^though...lol

Prince signed that deal with WB to release remastered reissues. They have been working on that Purple Rain anniversary album. It was due out last year....But it didn't happen...

The rumors are Prince is sitting out for more money.....Dude will be sitting until know one else cares except his hardcore fans....And that's a shame...Because Prince has the greatest music catalogue of the '80s....Point blank period. And it sounds like shit....

A shame....

is overblown or misunderstood

mastering does not equal mixing and its the mixes that make his album sound like that...

mastering can make louder and do slight eq adjustments but for the most part it is married to the previous decisions of the original mix-makers.

I'm thinking beyond mastering...I'm thinking including unreleased songs, liner notes, remixes, b-sides...the whole damn thing...

As for the whole mastering thing being overblown...All I know is when I play 1999 it sounds like shit....

just remaster the original WB album releases and maybe throw in the b-sides and extended versions (or key remixes if we're talking about the 90s albums).

like for SOTT:

- remastered SOTT album
- La La La, He He Hee (Highly Explosive)
- Shockadelica (Extended)
- U Got the Look (Long Look)
- Housequake (7 Minutes MoQuake)
- Hot Thing (Extended Remix)
- I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man (Live Version)

...that's easy shit. there's no good reason not to put that out.

fuck you.

Comparing what I do as a writer and what Prince does as a musician on the surface makes sense.....

I am always asked to speak on my past work that is considered worthy of such discussion. I do it all the time on panels, etc...I do it because I'm not afraid of my past...

As authors our work is often times re-released with new forwards, new chapters, etc...In other words, it's no different than a musician re-releasing their most noteworthy or classic work...

Nah dog....There's something else going on here. Again, I kind of ride with Prince on his decision to limit his work on social media....That just comes down to economics....

But exploiting the music that made you a legend in the first place? Come on....Dude even made peace with Warner Bros. to re-release his work....And all you here is crickets...

It's not about curse words.....It's about Prince's uber sexual '80s persona....Also, I believe P doesn't like the fact that fans and the public latch on to his hits when he's trying to move forward....Sure there have been other acts that have made such complaints....But Prince takes it to extremes.......Hell, Dylan hates performing some of his '60s stuff on tour....For years he proclaimed that he would only perform his newer material....But even he understood the importance of introducing his music to younger generations. Which is why he co-signed the many reissues and box sets that have come out over the years...

Again, Prince is a musician. This ain't rocket science. For someone who constantly complains that artists are being ripped off economically by labels and streaming services he sure shoots himself in the foot when it comes to taking care of his own music catalogue....

If everyone from the Beatles to Miles Davis (when he was alive) can co-sign reissues and remasters, so can Prince.....

I think his not opening himself up to remasters, re-releases with goodies, or starting to open the vault a bit more regularly is in some ways more harmful than that no-streaming, no-youtube policies.

Because in this time and place, young folks are going to find the music they want to find ---- but they have to want to find it. And you know that every time Dylan/Springsteen/Costello etc. put together one of these bootleg tapes or multi-disc/dvd boxsets expanding on a classic album, they make *new* fans. It's not even a question of whether or not they sell a lot of copies; it's a question of putting that artist in the limelight again, getting blog and magazine features, etc.

And I think it's even more important in light of the breadth of music younger folks listen to these days ---- they don't tend to focus in on one artist and get everything they ever released. They pick and sample a bit here and there, like a buffet. But when they see an artist like Dylan regularly getting cover features, still getting name-checked by bands, and they look him up and see all these new re-releases ---- I think there's a process of legitimization there, and it provides an anchor for deeper exploration in a climate where deeper exploration is less likely...

Folks who have followed Prince’s career know that he always had a weird tension between commercial success, artistic recognition and doing his own thing.

Sometimes, he’s all about getting paid and maximizing his market value. Prince has gloated at times about how much he getting paid whether it was for his giant WB contract, his Emancipation revenue, his Musicology concert/album hustle, etc….

But sometimes he undermines the value of his music with distinctly not market friendly behavior.

His relationship with WB was famous for him wanting to put our albums before WB had a chance to fully work and market whatever album was currently on the market.

And his disinterest in promoting music just a few months old because he “moved on” was legendary.

I’m sure Prince has hours, days and maybe even weeks when he sincerely wants to get paid and solidify his legacy and is focused on dropping some properly remastered classics….

…and then he gets sidetracked by a new song or album, a new band, a new female protégé , an impromptu tour, the occasional social justice issue or fill in the blank and the remasters project gets kicked to the curb.

Everybody knows the tours, albums, websites and clubs that P started and didn’t see to completion.

You can add the remastered albums to that list. For now…

For some perspective, check out this Wikipedia link on unreleased Prince projects.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreleased_Prince_projects

Some of this stuff has since been released and/or leaked but lots of material is still locked in the mythical vault..

The majority of new generations of music fans aren't going to be able to discover Prince's amazing catalog (both released and unreleased ) because of either his weird issues with control, or religious guilt, or an infuriating combination of the two.

U think Bob Dylan is using all the new mediums to reach the youngins? lol

Nah...He drops his albums, tours and goes on his merry way....

The difference though (besides that racial elephant in the room), is Dylan has the good sense to know that u pick up NEW fans by showing them why YOU matter...And u do that be repackaging your musical catalogue....

Prince has yet to do any of this^^^^^^

That's the issue....Not whether or not he is posting his music on YouTube, Twitter, etc...

I don't get why everyone is so fixated on reissues and staying stuck in the past.

If you wanna hear the old shit, listen to the old shit. It's really that simple. I listen to his old shit all the time. Still feels good.

Prince is a dude just like every other dude. Don't seem to me that he ALWAYS wants to be a business/brand. Lots of times, it seems to me, that he just wants to be a musician and a person.

So many people want to tell him what he should do with his music that he created. I never understood why so many non musicians wanna tell this dude what he should do with his music. Make your own music, then do what you think Prince should do with it

I personally like Phase 1 and Phase 2. I like Phase 2 a little better, but i definitely mess with Phase 1. Black Muse is just a great effing song. I let the album play through without touching it. It's dope.

Everyone wants to be A&R for this dude. Why haven't people just accepted that he'll do what the hell he wants. If he don't want YouTube to pimp him for free, that's his choice. It's his shit.

Folks create a whole lot of drama because he don't do what they want him to do. I just don't get it. If you like a song, rock with it. If you don't, then don't. It really is that simple. If you think Phase 1 is hot garbage, so be it, that's cool.

Nobody wants to hear SOTT and bullshit 1987 levels, where you get blasted out after another release comes up and you have to turn down the speakers after losing 20% of your hearing

You can remaster and care for your past music and STILL keep creating new music. Just because you take care or curate your old music appropriately doesnt mean that you dont care about your current work any less. It also does not mean you're stuck in the past.

Not doing so means your stuck in your own world. Or possibly being hardheaded to a fault thats truly ridiculous in nature.

Having said that, he reprotedly stated on twitter that he gave WB a rmeaster of PR already. Whether its true or not and what that would mean if true, who knows.

Nobody is stuck in the past, No. 1 Prince fan.......

It's just BUSINESS common sense....Prince always talks about being about his money, right? He's always talking about having full control over his music....Now he has it...

You think Bruce Springsteen is stuck in the damn past because he's dropping a sick ass box set for The River????

Bruce still releases new material. He plays new songs on his tours....But he has the good BUSINESS SENSE to know that your musical future (touring, album releases, etc...) is firmly connected to your past...One hand washes the other....You pick up new fans by allowing them to understand what the big deal was all about...

Stop making excuses for Prince dropping the ball. There's a difference between fans bitching and moaning about dude not allowing his music/videos to be posted on YouTube (I think THAT whole thing has been overblown...U don't see people shitting on the Beatles because they took their songs off of YouTube....) and fans complaining that their 1999 album sounds like shit....

Those great '80s albums, the albums that cemented Prince's legend, deserves better....It's not about living in the past. It's about making sure that P's recorded legacy gets the same attention as the likes of Miles Davis ....

Fuck fandom. It's just bad business, MANE.....

I do agree totally about Sign O' the Times though.

That album is definitely in need of a remaster.

But all the others, i'm cool with the sound.

Man...cut it out...lol...

ALL of those GOAT Prince albums are in need of remastering.........P is one of the most revered artists of his time. And as such he deserves better. But he's doing this all to himself....

Hopefully. he understands that young fans are eager to learn why he is trumpeted as such a bad ass...But they won't get it by buying horribly sounding albums that are supposed to be landmark works...

B-sides, outtakes, remastered takes, new liner notes.....P just need to stop the bullshit and stop acting like he's above it all.

Lol, doing it all to himself???? Lol, he seems to be doing okay for himself.

To say the kids wont be able to "get it" without it being remastered is kind of ridiculous. Those horrible sounding landmark albums got that assignment because of the music, not because of its sonic superiority. If an eager youngin cant add context to 30 year old recording, its not Prince's fault. If u cant hear the grooves and melodies that we hear, then remastering wont help u. And thats okay. You cant spend ur life tryna get all kids to "get it". Some will, some wont.
I personally didnt need an 808 added to Funky President to "get it".

YOU still don't get it....lol

We know Prince is a legend. We know he's rich as all hell. We know that his '80s catalogue is pretty much peerless. We get that Prince's farts lavender...blah, blah, blah....

But this is not about the fans who grew up with his music; the OLDER fans who ride with Prince. I'm talking about kids who need a reason to pick up a 30 year old album. They r the same kids that picked up those remastered Beatles, Bruce Springsteen and Miles Davis albums in recent years. They were turned on by the packaging. They dug the new added tracks; and the sound was top tier. Kids today think MP3's are bullshit...lol....And the very thin, lackluster sound of those great Prince albums are even crappier than MP3's...

U mentioned "Funky President"....Well,JB's work have been remastered, too. In fact, damn near every act worth their legendary weight has had remastered albums....

Please turn down the brazen Prince STANNING for a moment and have a come to baby Jesus moment.....Those great Prince albums simply sound like shit. Even the volume levels r shit....

Prince's work deserves better....And as a matter of business it just makes sense.

Bottom line: Prince is fucking up in terms of turning on younger fans who flock to the Beatles, Jimi, Bowie, Joni, JB, and even Mike Jackson.

Pretty soon P will be known as the Purple Rain guy...

Man please, kill it with the Prince stanning crap. That's always cop out 101. I'm a MUSIC stan. Prince just happens to be the illest at navigating through this whole music thing. Ain't no shame in acknowledging that. The dude is dope.

I just don't think he's "fucking up" if he doesn't put out remasters of his early stuff. I don't see it as the end of his world, or as a permanent barrier to a young dude gettin into Prince's music today. You seem to think it's a career death sentence. I don't.

If remasters come out, cool. If they don't, cool. Don't act like the shit is un-listenable. It's not. I STILL occasionally listen to the older shit, so stop the overly emo hyperbole about the "horrible" sound freezing out someone who wants to get into his early shit. As if a young motherfucker can't even HEAR the shit the way it is now. The shit sounds pretty good on Tidal right now. Some of his most beloved bootlegs that are classics now sounded like pure shit in terms of sound quality, but cats felt it anyways.

If you think it's a good business move for him to put out remasters, cool, I can smoke a bag of that, but, let's not act like its some sort of suicidal career move if he doesn't put out remasters of his old catalog.

The only album i believe he should ABSOLUTELY remaster is Sign O' the Times because the volume levels on that joint is way too low.

I don't think this dude wants to use his older catalog to get new fans. I think he wants to use new music to get new fans. Putting out Hit n Run Phase 1 and Phase 2 in 2015 is how i think he wants to get new fans. Btw, Phase 2 is a great effin record.

Within Serato, you would truly see why he needs to remaster it.

Seriously, I bought the album twice because I figured I had the low quality version. But nah, it just LOOKS horrible when you see the waveforms....all the songs are like 40% lower than the usual. Don't even try comparing it to Thriller, even the original Thriller sounds way, way, way better.

I fear he'll do them the way Dave Mustaine did the Megadeth remasters. For years I wanted those first few Megadeth albums remastered and when they finally came out I was disgusted. He rerecorded the drums, re did vocals, changed a couple of the lyrics, and just made it louder. Prince strikes me as the type of person who would George Lucas up his originals to make them "better". No thanks.

They don't understand because it's out of sight out of mind....

They understand Jimi...

They understand Led Zep...

And to be fair there are a lot of young Prince fans that dig Prince. The issue is his catalogue needs better handling....
