I always WANT to like Bowie's music more than I actually do like it. He has joints of course, but that last album was pretty meh to me. I really enjoyed the single for it, but nothing on the album sounded like it so I was thrown off. Legend he is, but his contemporary stuff isn't anything I'll throw on frequently.

I hadn't realized that he had sworn off interviews and, according to his producer, just wants to make albums at this point (no touring either - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bowie#2013.E2.80.93present:_The_Next_Day_and_Blackstar).

A lot of what we are hearing feels to me like an attempt to mash up find something of a culminating sound, something that represents everything he's done over his nearly 50-year career. As such, I think it will take time to assess - here, I get giddy over another epic structure of the sort we haven't seen from him in years (long, multi-sectional, sprawling), and the lyrics have that aphoristic Bowie imprint.

And I'm pretty sure that is him on the sax - when was the last time dude played the horn on record?

Going to go back to The Next Day this morning, but I remember really liking a lot of that record when it dropped.

Really interesting, need another listen but this is what I want from my aging artists. Just go full out left field and experiment and don't worry about trying to get on the radio any more. *Cough* Prince take notes!

Really wish he'd come back with a live tour but not sure if its his health or just not wanting to, respect it, just would love to see him live one time.

is great and worthy of the accolades it receives.

But yeah, Bowie's recent revitalization has been great to witness and is giving us some wonderful music. I wish more aging artists would do what he did and sit out the game for a while, find some inspiration and direction. It really worked for him.

I find it fascinating that his process involved our lack of knowing what was happening. Almost like the work has a timer built-in for it's power to be unleashed. I don't quite know how to put it in words....but the work can only be understood by us now. It was in a time-capsule before last night.

Very post-modern....very Bowie.

Both albums that the artists made knowing it would be their last, with many allusions made towards their death.

Much like Dilla, there will also be a similar response of people proclaiming Bowie as one of the GOATS (deservedly so) and a new generation digging into his catalog, along with contrarians complaining that he's being overrated in his death.

Blackstar is an amazing final act to go out on though, and with repeated listens I think it'll be recognized as one of the best in Bowie's discography.

Something happened on the day he died / Spirit rose a meter then stepped aside / somebody else took his place and bravely cried / I'm a Blackstar

woo, sounds like lines from the interludes of TPAB, Kendrick's gotta get on that, I think Bowie would approve.

I can't think of a similar situation to this. Yes Dilla comes to mind but I'm talking about

1) artist is aware that he will probably die
2) artist explicitly puts references to his death/mortality in general in his work. album is intense. dark. a "blackstar" is a cancer lesion etc etc etc
3) I mean, "Lazarus" what the fuck
4) Artist releases video for cryptic ass song "Lazarus" that is like, in a nutshell "I'm in heaven"..dies a few days after
5) public DID NOT KNOW anything about artists' illness

too many coincidences

I had only heard 3 other bowie albums before this (which I immediately downloaded after hearing of his passing), all of which range from great to amazing (self titled, Station to Station and my favorite Ziggy Stardust..mind blowing album) but this has impacted me so much...like dude literally made his death art. I'm probably going to dive into the rest of his discography now .

impossible to separate that context from the music. And the music is amazing - every track - it was a great idea to bring those jazz musicians in because the subtle jazzyness with that hard, driving, rock edge at times is just beautiful. I love the drumming here too. "Black Star", "Lazarus", "Dollar Days", "Girl Loves Me" are like....masterpieces.

the album and the circumstances surrounding the album are essentially what phrases like "he was on some next shit" exist for

then of course there is the continuation of his obscure meta references to the history of rock n' roll... such as this:

Not into Christianity or penis. Alien thing came from a delusion about being involved in orchestrating the WTC controlled demolition. Heard Low a bit as a kid so it's special but more inclined to listen to Peter Hammill, Todd Rundgren or Gary Numan.

Some other fun facts about a cultural relevance commodity

Not Jewish. Not the telephone rapping individual. Not especial sexi, datdajoke. Air song reference. Never assaulted a woman. Observation that thread title + username = sentence. Mostly disconnected from current media. Something else, forgot.
